That's also something I don't understand. Why do some country prefer using toilet paper than water? Water is more hygenic than just wiping your ass with a paper.

when i visited Malaysia, water was sprayed all over the toilet and floor.. i was so embarrassed and I didnt want to step on it. I think it is not good for public health.. in Korea since we dont have that hose we use wipes. It melts if you put it on water so that you can throw it away when you flush

when I went to SK even though my friend suggested me to bring wet tissues I couldn't do it I'd always bring an empty water bottle where I fill water from the sink to use inside the stall 😂

I’m indonesian living in france and the first thing i did to my apartment was installing my own water spray. And i always bring empty plastic bottle wherever i go just in case i need to pee or poo outside. I fill it with water from the sink before entering the toilet. I also bring a tiny bottle of soap with me everywhere.
Water and soap is the basic hygene in my family and most indonesian for generations. I remember being shocked when i found out that most of the world only use toilet paper lol
I'm an Indonesian student in Germany, i studied German engineering but still can't believe that they haven't adopted Bidet in their toilet yet.

Water is the best solution to clean your area down there. Imagine getting a mud/dirt on your hand or something, you'll wash it with water and didn't just wipe it.

Both is better. First water and then wipe, water sometimes isn't strong enough to clean everything (unless you are pointing a water jet directly into your butt)
But I'm used to the bidet for cleaning with water. How do SE Asians use that hose? Doesn't it splash everywhere if you clean yourself with it?
@@ni5439 the hose is pretty small and the water centered so, it won't cause a mess. But, its also depend on skill 😅
@@ni5439 this may sound gross but... If the water pressure is low, we'll also use hand to clean the areas, and we'll wash our hands with soap afterwards
@@ni5439 basically just keep the water pressure steady and aim the water right to the cleaned area. But now bidet is commonly used in public toilet in shopping malls, airport, railway station etc.
FYI, Indonesia has so many variety of rice. we have sticky rice, we also have rice that not sticky at ll, some eat black rice, red rice or brown rice for maintain our health, we also eat nureungji here

As a balinese i can relate a lot with Thailand and Philippines. In bali there is also urban talk about throwing thrash outside at night to avoid bad luck, light firecracker on new year(especially bali new year/nyepi). The funeral thing, (we don't literally use lemon water, but just water to wash our face and limbs), no pregnant women allowed to funeral, and about the drink in front of the store(usually we often use coffe and biscuit/rice).

Just wanted to add for the Philippines -
After attending a funeral, we also don't go home straight afterwards. We hang out someplace, eat/drink something before going home and call it "pagpag".
The first sale in a store is called "buena mano" and storeowners usually fan their merchandise with the money from that first sale for good luck.
We also sell drinks in plastic bags with straw - "samalamig/palamig kayo diyan!"
From my recollection, in our province, pregnant women are also not allowed to attend burials/funerals "to protect the baby."
The Videoke Queen the part about not going straight home is true in Malaysia too! At least it used to. Note: it’s only like this probably for Chinese funerals. Not sure about the others

근데 “코코넛 주스”는 다른 상황에서 사용해요. 그 상황은 바로 시신을 화장하기 전에 시신에서 나쁜 것을 치우기 위해 그땐 시신에게 코코넛 주스로 세수해요.
Actually when we came back from the funeral, we soak pomegranate leaf in the water and use that water to wash our face before we get into our house. But we use the coconut juice to wash the corpse’s face before cremate the body to wash the bad thing off it.

한국은 장례식장 갔다오면 몸에 소금 뿌리지. 이 문화는 어디서 왔는지 궁굼했는데 동남아시가 쪽이 기원인것 같아. 우리 문화가 동남아시아 쪽에서 기원인 것이 쫌 많아. 간장, 젓갈 문화는 동남아시아에서 온게 확실한 것 같고. 동남아시아 여행중 아이들이 비석치기, 잣치기 등등 우리나라 전통놀이 아이들이 하는 것을 봤었음.
We have a similar "style" here in the Philippines just like they do in Thailand. When we come from a funeral wake we don't go straight home, we either go to a convenience store or a fast food and stay a couple of hours there, the belief is so that the spirit of the dead person will not follow you home.
We call this pagpag, usually the victims of this are mini stop and 7 eleven 😂
but isn't pagpag supposed to be like you're getting rid of some imaginary dust so that the spirit doesn't follow you?

Our countries are relatives anyway, some ancient filipino tribes are Originally from indonesia, they were sea farers and somehow ended up here in the archipelago we call philippines, so yah, wasnt surprised by the similarity

Hi! We also have a similar custom here in the Philippines called "pagpag," in which we don't go straight home after visiting a wake/funeral, so that spirits don't come home with us!
The word "pagpag" literally translates to the act of shaking/brushing something off (like dust from a rag), but in this context, we are "shaking off" spirits that may have followed us. In my experience, most people "pagpag" at convenience stores.

Something that fascinates me in Southeast Asia are the myths/legends/folklore in each country. Like how Philippines has Biringan city, I think legends are such an interesting topic to talk about with friends from other countries ^^

actually many tradition is similar to Indonesia i think lol. about the cleaning thing in evening and don’t throw trash at night, my granma tell me so we can be productive in the morning and not lazy. and pregnant woman don’t go to funeral, sometimes when we go to funerals my mom tell me to bring garlic and some special leaves, atc

We have a similar belief regarding going to funerals/wakes with Thailand except that in the Philippines instead of washing your face/drinking coconut we stop by a different place before coming home so that the ghosts won't follow us. We call that "tradition" as "pagpag".

I was actually surprised when I came to Korea and they didn't have the hose since I was so used to seeing it but I grew up in America as well so it's not that big of a deal for me if I can't use water.

I’m Thai and I do the same as what you mentioned. Just wash our face with water. Normally, coconut juice is used for washing the dead person’s face.
well I go on dates with my boyfriend to warung nasi pinggir jalan (Indonesians must know how tasty the foods are) lol and we both eat with hands. It is somehow much more romantic than dining in fine dining imo 🙈

In Myanmar🇲🇲, we also don't sweep at night. In morning we start sweeping from front to back of the house and in evening, opposite. interestingly here in Finland in northern Europe we use the same kind of spray thing in the bathroom! but we also use toilet paper, what you use is kind of according to your preferences :D

I can understand why some people think it's strange to use water hose like in SEA. Unlike bidet, generally it's better if you take off your pants and shoes then hang it somewhere. And you don't use it "beside" the toilet, you put it under your bottom *while* you sit *on* the toilet.
With proper technique, your bathroom should still dry. You don't have to take off your shoes and pants too.
Bidet is convenient, obviously. But I prefer to have more control over the water direction and pressure level.

You dont stand or bend over 90 degrees, you do it in your seat so the dirty stuff wont escape the toilet bowl itself. The water pressure can be controlled so you won’t “spray sh*t everywhere” like these westerners think, and you do it AFTER you finish your business so there aren’t chunks of sh*t still sticking to your ass in the first place. People who think sh*t will spray to the walls when using a bidet/hose have clearly never used one and just have too-wild imaginations and deeply ingrained prejudices about how our cultural practices are inferior.
I'm not used to bidet and I prefer having a water hose because when I get up from the toilet seat and move to the bidet, I'm afraid that during the transit something might drip. I prefer having my behind already clean before I get up from the toilet seat.

In the Philippines, when you came back from a funeral ceremony, you should put a smoke and jump through this so that ghost will not follow you. This is how Bisaya (Southern Filipinos) usually do that.

I was on the international hotel public restroom and I was shock because no water spray on the toilet. So I ended up walk about 10 minutes to the shopping mall finding restroom that has water spray. I can relate~
7:24 hahah we have that in Finland too. But we also have toilet paper lol 😅 I was so uncomfortable in Korea as I was there 5 months as exchange student and just came back to Finland and first thing I realized I missed so much was the little "hand shower/bidet" XDD

What noel said is correct, just to make sense, in Philippines, we don't usually sweep the floor and throw our garbage at night bcs it means bad luck. Bad luck in a form of you might throw something important that u didn't notice because its dark.
and whenever we attend a funeral we also don't go home straight after, we drop off to some restaurants or other places to avoid being "haunted" by the spirit and we call it "pagpag"
