Comparing ENGLISH VS KOREAN Exercise terms (FEAT Allblanc TV)

American rediscovers the English language.

The title should be "Koreans Teach Dave English"

To clarify; “cleats” is American English. We call them “studs” here in the UK :)

Lately Dave's videos have been all about Dave forgetting English or American things. It's actually hilarious to me as a person who speaks multiple languages, too! It's nice to know I'm not the only one that fails to load things that are saved in my brain. Or like...forgetting that an expression in one language doesn't translate AT ALL in another one. xD

One thing I love about this these videos is that just because you're a native speaker doesn't mean you know why you use the words you use. Unless you're an etymology nerd like I am I find that non native speakers understand a little bit more about why that's the word to help make it stick whereas a native speaker is like dunno it's always been that word haha

So today I sat down with ALLBLANC TV and we compared Korean and English workout terms.. I've been really into gym culture lately, so I found this video especially interesting. I hope you guys enjoy it as well! MAKE SURE to visit Allblanc TV..they even have English subs on their video. It's a MUST if you're into exercise culture

In my part of America we use PT to refer to Physical Therapy when you have a body injury you go to a specialist gym referred by a doctor to see a physical therapist who went to school to be trained to help your body recover and heal.

For Americans we use “Home Gym” to refer to a place in our house where we exercise, but I don’t think we have a word for working out at home.

In the UK, cleats are called football boots and the spikes are called studs. We also use PT to refer to the trainer, i.e. Personal Trainer

Sometimes I doubt Dave actually knows English

We do use “weight” like that in English though- people regularly say “I’m doing weights today at the gym” to refer to doing weight lifting

Dave 🤦‍♀️ what did u do in school in America. So many things... but cardio is used for any exercise that keeps your heart (cardio) rate up for an extended period of time instead of short bursts. Love it!!! You are too much fun.

When I hear PT I think of physical therapy like rehab for an injury

In French we use « chocolate » for abs too ! like « tablettes de chocolat »

i understand because dave’s been in korea for so long, but i’m surprised he didn’t mention stuff like “wanna gym” or “i lift” or the corny slang for arms, like “guns”
i feel like “gym” is synonymous with “health” in korean because it’s informal but you can use it as a verb. like “i’m gonna gym today”
also a lot of people say core and cardio instead of abs and jogging

Instead of Rep Max, I usually hear, "Whats your: bench/deadlift, squat, Max?"
Big 3 is getting into power-lifting. Think average ppl know what those exercise are, but when you get into max big 3 that is getting into power-lifting so they prob won't know
The PT is personal trainer or physical therapy, i think u have to assume which one it is in the context it is used
I think the personal trainer/ trainer thing is: the personal trainer will prob call himself a personal trainer to distinguish what kind of trainer he is, while clients will prob call them their trainers. I think usually when ppl talk about personal trainer it is associated with gym personal trainer

At 7:32, when talking about "3대 몇이야?", in the states we refer to that as maxing (max lift). So in conversation, it would be "What is your ____ (bench, squat, deadlift) max?". This is how me and my friends refer to it, though there might be another expression for the "3대" (big three) that I am not be aware of.

"The Big Three" are the 3 exercises of powerlifting: Squat, Bench, Dead. People can ask "What's your total?" At a powerlifting meet, you win based on totals or how much you do for one of the events.

Although ”sweatpants” are still used to refer to workout pants, in my neck of the woods (U.S. Midwest) the term ”joggers” has been popping up more the last few years to specifically refer to slim fit sweats.

That’s the issue about living outside the US for such a long time.. it happens to me too! I have been in Mexico for as long as Dave has been in Korea and I have my own lapses in remembering words and phrases in English. Even though my best subjects in high school and college were English literature and creative writing 😅

For the deadlift-squat-bench combo, it is referred to as "the big 3." If you manage to do a one-rep max of each, and it comes out to 1000 pounds or more once you've added them together, you're said to have joined the 1000-pound club. Ah, someday perhaps.

일본에서는 헬스라고 하면 큰일난다고 하던데, 나라별로 발음을 하는 발음은 모르는 단어를 안다는것도 있어서

As someone who grew up as a military kid, PT meant the training exercises my dad would get up early and go do with his unit. Now, I've learned that PT here means physical therapy, like after you've had an injury or a surgery, to regain mobility and such.

In the healthcare industry, PT often refers to Physical Therapy as well!

I just realized that there is an English equivalent to choco pak and it's washboard abs.

In Norway we use PT for personal trainer as well.

Actually, PT is used in US these days. Gyms use the term PT as short for personal trainer/training sessions for advertisements and for records very often. Usually used with the word session following PT (PT Session)

I could almost learn Korean from these videos alone. 😃

PT in America is Physical Therapy. Both times when I was going to physical therapy the 2 times I needed it I’d tell my work or school that I had a PT appointment.

I've heard people say home training in English though.. not very common but I definitely have heard it before
