- So my Korean friends had a lot of questions..and curiosities on the United States. There are a couple of strange stereotypes that they have here on American based on movies. A lot of them are quite cute and silly, and I tried to cure their curiousity. Hope you enjoy the video :)

@@rambutketiak It depends! My family rinses rice if we don't want it to be sticky when it's cooked. Otherwise we don't really bother. Could be a US thing, Latinx thing, or just a personal thing lol

Aw it’s nice you brought your friends to talk and educate them about cultural differences between America and Korea. Not all cases are the same for every American (I’m Filipino-American) so the discrepancies can be found between races and cultures. For the shoe question, a lot of White people don’t like wearing shoes in the house too but I agree when a lot do bring in their shoes in the house. Thank you for also talking about police brutality though it was brief.
You've been out of the US for a while Dave 😉 my last CT scan was $7,000. In 2016 My son spent 2 weeks in the hospital ICU after an accident, and without including the life light or the actual doctors bills (because doctors and transport bill separately from the hospital) the bill for just the hospital stay was $473,000.00

No. But we were so rattled by everything we forgot to give the hospital our insurance info, so the original bills we got were astronomical. Luckily after they billed the insurance our out of pocket max was 30k. Still took a major hit and forever to pay off.
Co-pays depend on the insurance, the deductible, and whether you're in or out of network. For example (we have better insurance now) but in 2019 we had a $8,000.00 deductible then Co-pays and an 80%/20% split until out of pocket max of $14,000.00 was reached per individual or $24,000.00 for the entire family. And once you count the amount you are paying for your private health insurance each month, is that CT scan or MRI really just the cost of your co-pays? I'm not trying to start a debate or say there's anything wrong with our healthcare (I quite like the quality of care we have access to), I'm just saying it truly is far more expensive than even Dave let on.

There's a lot of disagreement about whether Americans wear shoes indoors or not. The answer is: it depends. You have to remember Dave comes from one part of the US and he hasn't been back in 11 years.
The US is filled with a wide variety of cultures and personalities which are also affected by the wildly different regions. America is HUGE (like North and South Korea are about the size of Minnesota, that's one state!) so the climate differences can be pretty vast. Someone in the colder regions of the North US, for instance, might not want to wear shoes indoors because it would track snow, mud, and debris in their home, whereas someone in the deserts of the south might think it's alright because there isn't much coming in on those shoes other than a bit of sand/dust. Or someone from a farm might not want to wear shoes indoors cause they work with manure, whereas someone in the suburbs might think it's alright cause they're only walking on pavement. It also varies by ethnicity and what an individual person considers hygienic. Sometimes it also has to do with carpets and wood/tile floors which don't usually have underheating. Tile/wood floors can be cold so I know quite a few people who have indoor slippers. A lot of people also have active pets and some feel that they shouldn't bother taking off their shoes because the animals are outside all the time and bring whatever is on their paws indoors anyway.
I've never heard of anyone sleeping with their shoes on though, unless they were so exhausted from work that they just collapsed on the bed.
yes alot of it probably have to do with where your ancestors came from. Just like you can tell like some difference in the food depending on if its like a italian american, german american, african american, scandinavian american etc. Alot of things are the same if you been here for like atleast 3-4 generations but there is alot of things that came along from the old countries. Although black people really lost most of their knowledge because of slavery, a cultural expert would probably know the roots by food, sayings, furniture etc.

yeah, i totally agree. my family always had the no shoes in the house rule when i was growing up, but there’s plenty of people who weren’t raised that way. it usually comes down to what your family taught you to do. whenever people come over, i’ll usually let it slide if they’re only walking on the wood/tile/etc, but if they try to step on the carpet w/shoes on i will start frantically shouting at them to take their shoes off. from my own experience, i feel like it’s around 75% do wear shoes in the house & 25% don’t.
When I was younger we actually weren’t allowed to take our shoes off until we got to our bedrooms because they would all pile up and no one could find theirs in the morning. And sometimes our pets would chew on shoes that we left out in the open too, or drag them off to somewhere else in the house.
One time I got out of bed and I was surprised to see I had shoes on... I dont know how I just totally forgot they were on. Most of the time we try to take them off at the door though, or at least on the 1st floor

그냥 외국 한번 못나가본 애들임 불편할 이유가 없음 견식과 인식의 차이는 경험에서 나옴 스테레오타입은 (고정관념) 겪어보지 못했는데 주워들은 내용에서 자기들 나름의 이해력에서 생기는 경우가 태반임 좀 더 넓은 세상을 겪어보고 이해하게 되면 자연스럽게 깨우치게 됨 그리고 이건 가장 이해가 안되는게 한국인(+대부분의 아시아인)은 국가와 개인을 동일시함 그게 너무 싫음 개인은 개인일 뿐임 외국을 나가게 되면 자신이 국가대표라는 인식을 가지고 예의있게 행동하는건 좋지만,너무 강박관념을 가진것 같아 안타까움 남에게 폐를 끼치지 않는다면 개인의 행복과 재미가 가장 중요하다고 생각함(아시아적 민주주의)

It would be cool to see Dave do this video with an American who hasn’t been living in Korea. Mainly because it can help seeing how he describes these things compared to someone living in the US now.

But I will say that houses aren't very inexpensive anymore. Millennials and Gen Z often joke about how having a house isn't even a dream anymore because of the economy. In the South, houses might be much cheaper, but up North from the East to West coasts, houses are unrealistic for a lot of us younger people. Apartment living is much more expected and normal now. Even in the suburbs, I see a lot of people who rent out rooms as if they're an apartment.
Even down south cause so many are moving from the north, home prices has ballooned and anything under 250k is either less then 1000 sq ft or is in need of repair

What keeps me stuck in an apartment is just the inability to go through and get a loan. It’s such a pain in the butt.
Id say that again depends on the region my parents live in east TN and only 2 years ago they built a house down there in a brand new neighborhood for about 250k

Oh god I was in Korea last summer for school and there was one night where I went to like a big club get together and a couple of these koreans I had just met started interrogating me about weed (one if the other americans cracked a joke about Colorado where I'm from) and it was so awkward. Like it was such an abrupt shift in tone. I never really thought much about it, like I know drug culture there is super taboo, but in the states like, drugs in general are illegal but all of us, even the super conservative people know at least one or two people who have at least done weed if not something harder. And them asking me about it was just constant shock. One of them looked seconds from his jaw snapping off when he'd asked if I'd ever tried weed and I was like...uh once, ya know, at a party. They kinda stopped talkin to me after that which was extra awkward to like, bro im not a stoner or like a methhead😭 I never realized how seriously the no drugs kind of culture is taken by your average joe in Korea til then. It was definitely interesting.
same for Japan, I did a paper in college for about this topic, cultural differences are crazy
here where I live the best university in the country is a known place for having weed everywhere, even though it's illegal lol
I grew up in india & recently emigrated to the States, i totally relate to the asian “no drug” culture part😅
and funny things i have friends from states and asked about smoking weed stuff on my country (which is asia but not east) and do me a surprise that it is kinda taboo here lol

Brandon Holmes yeah the American food stereotype of burgers and hot dogs is a bit off. Every American probably eats more Chinese and Mexican than those to be honest.
Yeah. When 10years ago, news showed us american food: hamburger pizza coke... but now, koreans know America have many different cultures, so we know american eat rice.
@@nowwwoo that's good. I'd say traditional American food is Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner as well as southern food "soul food". We have Cajun cuisine as well.
@@jacew9683 I really doubt the average American eats more Chinese and Mexican food than hod dogs and hamburgers. The whole of America is littered with fast food American places. Only Taco Bell is common throughout the whole US, and that's not even real Mexican food. It doesn't compare to all the Wendy's, McDonalds, Burger Kings...

That shoe in the house varies. In my family, as soon as I came home my parent told me to take off my shoes and wear house shoes. Don’t walk around in socks or barefoot cause it will get dirty.
Same. I am white and we were never allowed to wear shoes in the house in my family and now that I'm an adult I still don't in my apartment. Growing up all my non Asian friends would be confused when I would enter their houses and start taking my shoes off. My Asian friends moms loved that I took my shoes off without being asked though.

@@pelin0611 lol. maybe she's living in a carpet floor. Korean apartment has a heating system on the floor. so we are used to sitting or lying on the floor. that's why most of Korean mothers do vacuum and mop the floor very often.
in my house, i personally don't like walking in with my outside shoes. my parents don't care, but it's not a problem because we're always sweeping the floor lol however, if we're going to visit someone else's house, we take our shoes off out of courtesy.

As a Filipina-American, I like that this hit a lot of really common generalizations about Americans from movies. The shoe thing is really dependent on culture though -- I grew up in the Bay Area with a lot of other minorities, and we all take our shoes off in the house lol! And we eat rice! It's interesting to find out that eating rice isn't seen as common in the US.

Aw, Wonshik is adorable lol. I think one thing people don't understand is just how diverse the US really is. So every family is basically going to be different, and you can't really paint everyone with the same brush. But I think you did very well answering their questions, and I was really interested to see what they asked!
They are so funny! One thing I notice is the way Korean people speak. They are very blunt and in America that usually gets taken as being rude. The way they joke with you despite you only having met them that day would probably not go over well here. It's quite interesting as to what people get offended by or see as disrespectful in other cultures. I hope you bring them on again because they were a great laugh and hearing about their questions is always super interesting! Thanks for the videos Dave you're doing great! :D
I always feel like people joke very quickly in the States as well, but I think it varies from person to person! And jokes are hard to translate to your second language, for sure! I always feel like sarcasm especially doesn't translate from English to Korean - and some other languages haha. Also, I know what you mean about the bluntness! Culturally we don't always joke (or talk) about the same things - appearance for example!

I was so surprised to hear them mention Harlem! I've been living here all my life and it's honestly changed from what they know of. Of course, this is still kind of a low income area with projects, but a lot of my home is being overrun by big business :( my surrounding neighborhood is mostly small businesses with a few New York chains or global chains, but the hotspot of Harlem has been taken over by large outlet malls and many places I used to go to are being bought out. Full blocks have been torn down and rebuilt with commercial spaces. I'll be moving into my own white picket fence home soon and I'll be sad to see the neighborhood be even more different as time goes on

My cousins are looking into moving and the houses they were looking at (2 story, small/no backyard, needs a bit of fixing up, and is in a middle class area) was over $800,000... my friend moved into one that looks about the size of the picture he showed in the corner and it was a million dollar house... California is expensive

this was cool of you to talk about cultural differences between the us and korea. i feel like a lot of non-americans don't realize there are a lot of different cultures within the states, so a lot of generalizations don't apply to everybody. like the food here is gonna be different depending on your own cultural background. i was surprised that they were shocked we eat rice! same thing with wearing shoes in the house. this all depends on your racial and cultural background. i'm asian and latina so the food i eat mainly comes from my own cultures. i hardly eat "american" food (burgers, hot dogs, idek what other food would be considered american lmao). and shoes are never to be worn in the house!
american movies portray us in a generalized way so our personal cultures aren't always shown to the world, which makes it understandable why non-americans are surprised when we break a stereotype. whenever i see videos of non-americans learning about the culture here, i feel like they only think about what is mainly shown on tv...which would be white americans... there's so much diversity and so many cultures here but poc aren't represented enough. we're forced under a stereotype and it can sometimes feel like our identities dont matter, u know?

Great video Dave. Wonsik his own low voice is much better. Not the fake high pitch voice. Even as a nerd as explained in the video, showing to that one lady that you listen and care for that one woman even in America, Wonsik will find one special person for him.

I actually really enjoyed this. Learning is the first step to understanding. The dialogue between all of you was hilarious, but I hope it provided insight to your friends. The best way for them to understand is to come over and check it out themselves, maybe even live in the States for a little while.
