- So, in Korean, they have 4 character idioms that are based on Chinese characters. As in, they use Chinese characters and mean the same thing as they would in Chinese, except that the way they say it is completely different(It's in Korean), but the pronunciation isn't that far off considering it derives from Chinese. So I took these idioms and saw if a chinese speaking person can guess the meaning just from hearing the Korean. Enjoy :)

여러분 생각하시는 ‘대만어’는 민난어 입니다. 중국어의 방언으로 주로 중국 푸젠성과 타이완에서 쓰입니다 (사투리라고 생각하시면 되용~! 다 알줄 아는게 아니여서 표준어는 중국어입니다 😃)
중국인이라고 사자숙어(四字熟語) 잘 알꺼라는 생각은 버려요. 사이선님은 잘 모른단 말이에요!!!

한번 가더니 그후로 아무 소식이 없는 걸 함흥차사라고 하는데
이런 건 한국 역사에서 생긴 성어라서 한자로 적어서 보여줘도 중국인들은 전혀 모릅니다.
아들 이방원이 집권 후에 빡쳐서 고향 함흥으로 돌아간 태조 이성계 구슬리려고 태종 (이방원)이 차사를 보낼때마다 돌아오는 이가 없으니 신하들이 함흥 가라고 하면 죽을것 같아서 아무도 안가려고 했다는. 근데 현대에 와서는 그런 의미보단 깜깜 무소식, 기다리다 목 빠지겠다, 귓구녕이 막혔나 대답을 안해 정도의 의미로 쓰이게 되었죠.

저도 한국에서 대학 다니고 있는 대만 유학생인데 한국에서 쓰이는 일반적인 사자성어는 대만이나 중국에서 아예 안쓰는 표현이예요 ㅠㅠ 사이선님이 맞이신게 신기... 그리고 한국 5년 살면서 사자성어의 한자를 알아볼 생각도 안했어서 이 영상을 보면서 알았네요.😂

Taiwanese speak “Taiwanese mandarin” which is very distinctly different to mainland Chinese mandarin in terms of the accent and use of words, similar to the difference between American English and British English

중국인들이나 대만인들이 한국 사자성어를 잘 모르는 이유가 우리가 쓰는 사자성어의 대부분 춘추전국시대 ~ 당나라 정도쯤에 만들어진 건데
중국인들이나 대만인들이 쓰는 사자성어는 주로 명나라나 청나라때 만들어진 것을 쓰고 있음. 그렇기 때문에 고대 사자성어를 많이 쓰지 않고 있음

한자 발음도 한국 한자 발음이 고대 중국 한자발음과 더 유사하다고 하죠. 현대 중국, 대만의 한자 발음은 여러차례 이민족왕조가 들어서면서 원래 한족의 한자발음이 많이 변형되었습니다. 반면 한반도는 원래 한족의 한자발음을 배워간 후에 중국에서 여러 일이 벌어진 그 긴 시간동안 사실상 왕조교체는 1,2회정도만 있었고, 그나마 한번은 고려-조선 교체인데 그건 사실상 국가나 민족이 바뀌는게 아니라 나라는 그대로 있고 집권당이 바뀌는 수준의 왕조교체였으며, 이민족왕조가 들어서서 한반도문명 자체를 갈아엎는 일은 단 한번도 일어나지 않은데다가 그 기간 내내 한반도 거주민은 단일언어권 동일민족집단이었기 때문에 거의 한자발음이 바뀌지 않았습니다.

발음만 비슷한거지 .. 한자가 비슷한게 아님.
영상에서 나온걸 맞출수가 없는게 발음은 제껴놓고 일상생활에서 사용하냐 안하냐가 중요한거임.
영상분말대로 自激之心은 중국에서 안씀 아마自卑感이라고함..
반면 同病相憐은 자주쓰니 바로 맞추지. 발음자체는 한국 일본 중국 한자어끼리는 서로서로 규칙성이 어느정도 있기 때문에 단순 발음비교는 의미없고, 한자어가 어느정도 비슷하냐가 중요
현대 중국어가 중원에서 사용하던 중국어에 북방민족의 언어습관(얼화 등)이 많이 들어가서 형성되었는데... 한국 한자어는 그 영향이 적던 남북조수당 시기의 한자어 발음을 들여왔고... 광둥어 등 중국 남부지역의 중국어는 북방민족의 침략을 피해 남쪽으로 내려온 사람들에 의해 쓰여졌으니 공통점이 많은 것은 사실입니다만.. 저는 역사적으로는 이해가 되는데 성조가 섞여 있으니 잘 모르겠더라구요..ㅠㅠ

비슷한 콘텐츠를 광동어 하는 사람과 해봐도 좋을 것 같아요. 항상 느끼는 건데, 한국어 한자 발음은 보통화(Madarin)보다 광동어(Cantonese)에 더 가까운 것 같거든요.
다만 일부 한자의 발음은 광동어보단 보통화나 대만식 민남어에 더 가까운 경우도 있습니다.

there are quite a lot of 4 word idiom that are quite different from Chinese
塞翁之馬 is normally 塞翁失馬 (often followed with焉知非福)
甘言利說 doesn't exist (zh.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E7%94%98%E8%A8%80%E5%88%A9%E8%AA%AA)
氣高萬丈 google search reveals mostly Korean usage. I guess from meaning of the word its inferrable
The same is true in japanese too. 一生懸命 doesn't exist in chinese even though it's often used in Japanese.

아마 한국인이 쓰는 한자는 엄청 옛날 거라서 그런 걸 수도 있어요ㅠ 중국이랑 다른 나라는 계속 한자를 발전시키고 변형하고 있지만 한국은 한글 쓰다보니까 완전 옛날 거 그대로 쓰는 것 같아요😅. 그런데 한국어 엄청 잘 하시네요😢 전 중국어 요즘 배우는데 너무 어려워요ㅠ

Hi Dave, i love your videos! I have a suggestion! How about doing comparation video between american (you) and indonesian on learning korean, how you and the indonesian processing the alphabets/latin words (idk) into hangeul and vice versa (like the word fool (바보), mostly it transcribed into babo, but for indonesian who spell the alphabets literally (unlike english), the first letter is p instead of b). I think this is good idea. Keep creating educational videos, and be happy! cheers.

It seems those words are not widely popular in Chinese Region, but in Korea, it is almost common sense for most Koreans. Because everyone learned in School.
It's very commonly used in real life in Korea tho. I guess that's not the case in China.

you should try this game with a hongkonger! since korean pronunciation is actually more alike with cantonese (hong kong's native tongue), probably because cantonese is believed to be an ancient language from ancient china, i.e. the time when these 사자성어 are created :D
(p.s. as a hongkonger myself, learning korean is so much easier because the pronunciation of many words are almost the same)

Need to correct, saeongjima is actually quite common of a phrase to use. Sure, maybe you don't use it in day-to-day life but it's still common. I wasn't looking at the vid bc I wanted to test my korean-mandarin skills and the minute I recognize "ma" from saeongjima, I knew it's 塞翁失马 (although the hanja here is 赛翁之马 which is a bit weird lol). Just like a user who commented below, 塞翁失马，焉知非福.

There is a language called Taiwanese which is Chinese Hokkien dialect, but like she says the primary language is Mandarin
Over in Malaysia we just called it Hokkien
Chinese hokkien (台語) is primarily used by older generations and people in the south/rural areas .
It’s a dying language as less and less people in my generation are using it. In fact back in my elementary school there was just one class a week teaching students how to use hokkien.
Heck I had English classes more often than hokkien. It goes to show how much people care about this language.

Actually regarding 조삼모사/朝三暮四, 42Sun was actually correct with the chinese meaning, but the korean version has a different definition. It's pretty common for the definition to be vary between the idioms in both languages
I think the chinese idioms that the koreans are using and have been using were from the ancient times (?) And also chinese as a language has evolved so much through the centuries and so has korea so.. it's understandable that a chinese person wouldnt have heard/seen some of the korean idioms. I just think that they should be old chinese idioms that probably modern china never use anymore.

[UNDERSTANDING THE COMPLEX CHINESE LANGUAGE]
Chinese language is made up of many different dialects. Dialects are usually used among families or in specific regions (eg. Hong Kongers using Cantonese) and villages. The main language is called Mandarin, or simply referred to as Chinese. There are two different types of written language, Traditional and Simplified. As the name suggests, traditional has more strokes and complex characters, while simplified has, well simplified characters. However, they are all pronounced the same. The written language used differs from countries. Simplified Chinese are used in China, Singapore, Malaysia. Traditional Chinese is used in Taiwan. Hence, texting with Chinese people from countries using two different written language can be challenging.
Traditional Chinese are prominent in old historic buildings. For countries using Simplified Chinese, some may choose to use Traditional Chinese for aesthetic purposes.
Korean and Japanese languages uses traditional Chinese characters as part of their language as well. They are pronounced differently, but often have more or less the same meanings.
For Korean, it is only mainly found in old writings and buildings, not in daily day-to-day usage. For Japanese however, it is incorporated into their language as Kanji. Because of this, many people, especially non-Asians, cannot tell the difference between Chinese, Korean and Japanese.
Since Japanese uses Chinese characters often, it is possible for a Chinese to roughly understand Japanese solely based on Kanji.
Chinese language has 4 different tones for each character. (Eg. mā, má, mǎ, mà) It is not a phonetic language, meaning you have to memorise the strokes, meaning and pronunciation of every single character. Chinese characters are made up of at least 1 radical, and can be made up of two different characters to form a new characters. Sometimes this can serves as clues to the meaning of the characters ( radical 氵often means that water is involved, eg. 海 - sea, 汗 - sweat).
Hopefully after this brief introduction, you have more context going into this video and that you have a better understanding of one of the hardest language in the world!

Oh Chinese and Korean zhaosanmusi have different meaning
Yirou Vn indeed they don't, they have the same root and same meanings at the beginning. it's just how people have been incorrectly used that word in Chinese.

Language is a system of communication where sound or signs convey objects, actions and ideas. It is social by nature and thus inseparably connected with people who are its creators and users; it grows and develops together with the development of society. So the current definition of "zhaosanmusi" in Chinese is not _wrong_ , it's just that its definition developed (along with the Chinese society) and changed after the idiom was introduced to the Korean society.

확실히 번체자는 어느정도 뜻인지 이해가능한데 간체자는ㅠ
일본 조요칸지는 어느정도 덜 생략했기도 하고 한국에서도 많이 쓰는 약자여서
確かに簡体字より繁体字がもっと理解易い！(中国語を全然下手でも)
日本語の常用漢字は韓国でも使っている略字があったのでちゃんと読めなくてもどのぐらい理解可能。
