The part at 2:36 is a reference to Narcissus. When Narcissus looked at the water and saw his own face he fell in love with himself. Narcissus then realizes he can’t materialize his reflection and ends up committing suicide. Here Matty sees a digital screen and can’t resist its beauty. It is with reference to the superficiality of modern technology and how we can’t gain anything material or meaningful from it and it can lead to depression and suicide.

Sad song and sad video that describes Matty’s current mental state where although having broken his addiction to drugs feels sad and lonely and finds temporary pleasure on the internet and memes that ironically are with him inside the same simulation that is supposed to make you feel wholesome with something that isn’t real.
Hope isn’t lost evident in the scene where Matty kisses himself although struggles to do so with passion, but shows he is trying to reach out and connect with himself to achieve self love.

This just describes exactly how I feel, I feel trapped in an online world that I don’t even want to be in. But online is the only place where I feel seen... and this isn’t just my struggle it’s a generational struggle. The internet is robbing us of all our time and connections, we need to break out somehow because it’s breaking so many of us.

I think what’s kind of sad is that this whole video describes going offline, away from it all, but really, it’s just another simulation Matty enters which is kind of ironic. It just gives me this cold, melancholic chill.
Maybe it connects to his struggle with addiction somehow, both with drugs and his attachment and resonance towards the internet temporarily, relating with it....

This video really does a good job of depicting the millennial struggle, or at least a part of it. Not everyone has been in the exact situation of Matty having to off drugs, but the concept of finding solace in the internet while simultaneously being consumed by it is so prevalent to our generation.

It’s pretty much SIMPLE, and clear as day that the younger generations, including millennials, spend time using humor, and laugh/make a joke out of small, little things; even though deep down they use it to hide the fact that they’re really lonely and sad inside

This broke my heart. He loved her and because of his lifestyle he lost her and lost touch with himself so he had to seek help. We’re all in a weird state of this. Numbing ourselves with media, memes etc... It’s so real and raw. Gosh this band keeps getting better 🖤

This could represent us (everyone) who is wasting his or her time being in a virtual world where we just watch memes instead of being with real people... it could mean that memes became our only friends. Let's be honest, loneliness is a big thing nowadays because we fill it with these things... we distract ourselves from it cause it's just easier to look at our phones instead of being with someone! with a real person! We are substituting human connection with internet...

Recently been diagnosed with Alcoholism (Alcohol Abuse) and I'm currently 11 days sober. When Matt says "I depend on my friends to stay clean" I genuinely felt that. If it wasn't for my bro's, I honestly don't know where I'd be right now I can't lie. I'll never take my friends for granted ever again in my life

Y’all, I don’t know about you but I honestly think Matty’s mind is so full of ideas and thoughts that can change the world. For the better. The 1975’s videos and lyrics are so complex, full of meanings everywhere and we could stay hours analysing them.
He really is an artist. In so many forms. He’s a singer, a poet, a thinker, a painter, an installation artist. I love him and his mind.

So many good songs and albums one after the other. I can't remember the last time a band/artist have done this. Very talented! the music, lyrics, image, everything. It's amazing to see and listen to.

From a Greek mythology, Narcissus who's so obsessed with his allure image of himself on the water, unable to tear himself away, narcissus drowned like matty did.
The blue-screen pond with running code thingy represents the internet, with this era of instagram and other type of social media, these platforms are used to enhance one's grandiose feelings of self-importance and the need for power or admiration, by posting their best-looking photos or other self-centered stuffs online. Causing the self-entitlement and narcissistic behaviour. Eventually they became obsessed with their online-image, addicted to attention and admiration, or worse, depressed(drowned).

This song is the culmination of Matty’s journey through the various addictions he’s faced through his life. All of the heartbreak, drugs, sex and love has all ended in a beautiful song about true mindfulness and spiritual rebirth

My dad passed away about 6 months ago from life-long substance abuse issues (40+ years of alcohol and cigarettes). After it happened, I was obsessively listening to this song because it was what I always wished he had done: accepted he had a problem, gotten help for it and taken his own recovery seriously. My family and I tried to get him to see a professional for ages, but ultimately, any lasting change would've had to come from him. I miss my dad terribly and still think about him all the time, but God, did this song get me through some really rough weeks. I'd forget to eat or barely sleep, but The Birthday Party became my mantra back then. Take care of yourselves, guys.

This music made me feel so good, I felt the same way I felt while listening to medicine especially at the end of the song. The 1975 is my favorite band of all the times and I love everything they do because I know it always have a purpose
