Matty is a freaking genius, I love how he connects his songs and videos so it feels like we are following a really long and interesting story, also how he's able to talk about addiction without having to literally say "This song is about addiction!" But instead using metaphors, imagery and hints of it.

as a person who was addicted to drugs as well and been through this, I may say that it's exactly like this but worse because you feel like you can't get out of it and you're getting crazy, I really hope he's really fine now and don't have a relapse. 🙏🏽

I see a lot of people here who really like this style of performance, so I'd love to tell everyone that this video is based off of a concert film by Talking Heads! A lot of The 1975 was hugely influenced by Talking Heads (an American New Wave groupe), specifically watch the 1983 live version of "Life During Wartime" and its almost to a tee what this video is trying to portray, which is super cool. Kudos to Matty and the band for expressing their love for their influences!

Two years ago I was in a mental institution, I found myself often in the patio the same dance as the Talking Heads. I find it amazing that a band I've loved for years gets also its inspiration from the same place I do. Amber makes a great Tina!!!🎉❤️

Exactly what happened.
Couldn’t be more proud of Matty for fighting his addiction demons. I remember listening to robbers for the first time in 2013. Fell in love with his style of writing and portraying feelings better than any artist can. While I know that someday they will go their separate ways, I won’t cry because it’s over but rather I’ll cry because I’m celebrating a band that brought me back from the brink of self destruction. To some it’s just music, to me it’s the soundtrack to my life. #longlivethe1975

This was genuinely so genius. It really is what addiction feels like: you’re a passenger in your own world, every day is an eerie version of the same day, and everything feels surreal and coated in a haze. There’s the you when you’re not using that you walk in on from time to time (Sincerity is Scary) and the you when you’re using (INLIINWY); one seems far away but brighter and clearer and happier, and one feels gauzy, surreal, like it’s not you and you’re in a dream.

This video is horrifyingly accurate about drugs. I love how they aren't glorifying drugs. The video shows how it's a never ending nightmare and how drug abuse leads a person to be on the passenger seat in their own life.
Personally, it's very helpful for me as I relate to Matty's desire to be sedated from childhood and it encourages me to not go down that road.

-Nightmares
-Hypnic jerks (sudden moments in dreams that cause you to startle awake)
-Hallucinations, specifically of impossible things (a person splitting into two identical twins), and irrational acceptance of them
-Distorted perception of time (feeling like everything around you is moving too fast or too slow)
-Sudden body dysmorphia
-Paranoia, specifically of subtle changes when you aren’t looking (the background dancers switching sides while he’s off-stage)
-“Liar liar, pants on fire” and the guilt you feel from lying about your addiction
-Dissociation, and the feeling of being in two places at once
-Deja vu, so severe that you feel like you’re actually reliving an old memory
-[idk what the dancers continuing in the dark with no music could represent, to be honest]
-Sudden dysmorphia leading into dissociation
-Vivid, realistic dreams that might involve nested dreams/nightmares

Hey Hombre27 Dude stop trying to make it sound like heroin addiction is misunderstood by the media or society. Nobody ever has romanticised heroin withdrawal and I don’t think you know what romanticising even is. A good example of romanticising is 13 Reasons Why because it makes suicide seem like good way to get someone to love you or to get back at someone. If you can tell me a show or anything at all that romanticises heroin addiction/withdrawal and how it does that, then I’ll agree with you

All it did was show the terrible aftermaths of suicide and a guilt that no one took the signs she was displaying seriously: not her friends, lover, parents nor her fucking counselor. You do realize she fought way harder for help than your average suicidal person, right? Sometimes, your mind does consider suicide as a viable option to cover the hurt some people give you and make it seem plausible to end your life so that the other person realizes your value. That's a very real twisted perception that your mind generates when pain takes over rationale. But if you think her suicide was a revenge ploy, you're severely misreading. The suicide scene in the bathtub is just about the most brutal scene and it shatters all accusations of romanticizing; it's plain terrifying. And if the first season created any doubts, the second season shows in graphic and emotional detail how her actions destroyed so many lives. The recurring feeling throughout the show is how ugly depression is and how much more damage it causes than you think it'd. Ok I got it. Matty is talking about his time when he was depressed and on drugs:
- the first time he wakes up he coughs, showing the person he sees is sick
- he wakes up again and sees a glass break(representing bad things will happen)
-he gets on stage and notices people staring at him, because he’s worried people see his addiction
- his mouth is sewed shut because he’s worried his drugs will lead to him not singing
- he hallucinated awful things like being on fire and humiliating himself, and then seeing himself mock himself(oof)
- he goes through a door and sees himself having fun, but it’s a fake made up world, and a fake made up idea
- he goes back and sinks into the ground, as a he then picks himself up from the depression
- he wakes up again and sees the glass, but it doesn’t brake, then he walks away and it breaks to mirror the beginning idea that things are completely better and his depression and addiction aren’t completely gone...

i think the majority of weird things that happen symbolize addiction symptoms, so like being on fire means hes on withdrawal and trying to quit. But its not that easy since withdrawal has things like hot flashes (fire) and cold shakes. I also think his mouth is sewed shut because he is scared of coming out and telling fans, so he feels mute. anyway thats just my theory, i like yours too^^

FUN FACT: Pretty sure the aesthetic of the concert in this video is inspired by a Talking Heads concert live in LA in 1983!! Matty's pale oversized suit & hairstyle, the outfit of the matching dancers, the synchronised dancing, the lighting and composition are all very similar to the whole concert but especially the song "Life During Wartime". (Look it up- the whole concert is on KRplus!) And to make a further connection some members of the Talking Heads were known to cocaine users (something Matty has also struggled/is still struggling with and what this song is supposedly about). Have always loved the vintage vibes of 1975 🖤✨
