When My Chemical Romance frontman, Gerard Way, conceived of Umbrella Academy he probably never foresaw it’s future popularity.
Okay, so maybe he knew it would be a hit at Dark Horse Comics, but there’s no way he could see it becoming a hit Netflix original series. Which brings us to the point of this video. Yes, you’re here to learn all about the difference in the characters from the comic book personas to their streaming debut. It’s all so exciting, isn’t it?
You’re about to hear all about the famous Hargreeves children like Luther, Klaus, Diego, Ben, Vanya, Allison, and Number Five. However, there’s way more in this jam-packed video about all the characters you want to know about it. We even get to massively changed characters like The Conductor and The Handler. Plus, we even mention Cha-Cha and Hazel, because who could forget those two lovable side villains.
No character was safe from our critical lens. Trust us, you’ll find plenty of surprises in this one.
You’re never going to see Klaus the same way after seeing this list, but honestly, the same could be said for every member of the Umbrella Academy. The casting team took a lot of creative liberties on this one you guys.

i own all 3 books, and ive read only the first, because i wanna see the series first, but so far my favorite character is Klaus! he brings it all, love, hate, dispair, hope , salvation , horror, humor, everything!

Klaus is genuinely one of my favorite characters that I've seen in anything in quite awhile. Ben and Five are also great characters, I can't wait to see more of Ben in season 2!

Chaotic floral arrangement yeah but they cosplay for a day of so and most of the time it’s cheaply done. They’ll have to put these costumes for days on end and it’ll will definitely cost them more than its worth. The Netflix adaptation is just as good and for some people even better than their comic counterparts.
@@chaoticfloralarrangement8741 Yes but in a professional adaptation, that wouldn't suffice. Character designs in a live action show in a realistic setting can't look like cartoons. The fact that cosplayers wear goofy cheap designs has no relevance to how a professional adaptation should be stylised.

Proof of this in Man on the Moon (S1E4): The tow truck driver still has no shirt on, abd all the others still wear bloodied clothes e.g. Vaughn Mueller who still wears a sweater with tire marks on it.
@@theo4834 I was thinking about it while watching s2 because in s1 all of this ghosts still have injuries and they are wearing the same clothes as when they died but they said that ben died on a mission so he should be wearing the umbrella academy uniform and be covered in blood or something
Julia Jaworska they might have redressed him for the funeral maybe, or he died after the mission, as result of injruy (which I don’t think so, as Reginald would have just brought him back with some crazy serum)

I really wish you would mention the beautiful similarities all of them shared, from the original design -to help towards their more realistic/modern creations, that we see in the series. Diego has only one eye, in the comic, but they included that detail with the scarring on his face, in the series etc.

I think the narration here is going for the British-English definition of homely, which means "simple, but cosy and comfortable" - it's the only way it makes sense in the sentence he uses as somebody being unattractive wouldn't make somebody want to change their life.
PaddyTV Hmm I didn’t consider the British definition (as an English grad I am familiar), you might be right! That would make sense and work in context. However I feel that with words which such divisively different meanings across American English and British English, it might just be best to use another word altogether? If Eudora and Agnes were animated characters in UA it wouldn’t bother me at all; I just feel one must be particularly careful when describing a real person’s physical appearance.

Chara MCnuggers I’m pretty sure the creators of the comic confirmed Klaus was pansexual, so he could easily date a woman and have a child. Also, the newest season is based in 1963, which is perfect timing for Klaus to find Dave before the war so they could be together.
In the comics, Klaus actually has a child with a woman he meets in Vietnam. Luther expresses some confusion about this, having assumed Klaus was strictly into men

I'm not superficial like that, but considering, he, wants to be more comfy with people, unlike the counter-part who has other priorities, it helps he can partially hide.

@@thisisafalseaccount105 Well, Luther ins't Hulk, he is way smaller, and he keep the same head, so a costume is more simple, especially under the jacket. But they probably used CGI AND a costume for shirtless scenes

I for one am glad they look nothing like in the comics and that's true for most comic book characters. Wolverine is Hugh Jackman for example. Also it's very important to have a good script otherwise it won't go anywhere. But Hollywood tries it's best to ruin things. And some fans are no better.

I feel like the Netflix character looks are a lot more for tv and the comic looks are typically comic . The umbrella academy show isn’t meant to be a direct representation of the comics , it’s more an adaptation so I think that the characters and the way they look fit a lot better than the original looks tbh. It looks more realistic and not as cartoony

The whole civil rights movements could've NEVER happened with comic Allison and they get to shove some neat racism commentary which is specially important
Agreed. Allison was my second to least favorite (only after Luther) in season 1, but was my absolute FAVORITE in season 2 because her arc was so good. I’m glad they decided to make that casting call early on because it allowed for this arc.

The arc was bull crap. Apparently only black people experience racism and Indian, Asians and Hispanics are accepted by racist white people. It’s very insulting.

Not that non-black minorities didn't experience discrimination, but they would not have been subject to Jim Crow laws like a black person was. I think they could have shown more of that, but I think there would still have been complaints only this time that they were leaning too heavily on the racism aspect.
i just thought the race swap was good because it didnt seem so creepy when her and luther got heaty lol. if they had 2 same-raced people raised as brother and sister and then have sexual chemistry it might have seemed a bit much.

Idk bout Patch tho. Tbh her "relationship" with Diego was so bland and eh compared to Diego's new relationship in season 2 which actually felt more natural compared to Patch's. I LOVED Hazel and ChaCha tho. And Five. Those three carried the show for the first season lmao
They were ex’s in the show so the relationship was gonna be like that and I don’t like cha cha at all. Her character is annoying but that just means that she’s a great actress.

Learning the difference between the comic and Netflix was interesting. But I really like the Netflix adaptation more.
I don't think this video is a good case about what they "should" have looked like.
The Neflix version keeps the series rolling and at a constant high the entire two seasons, so I think they did a wonderful job.

The Hazel and Cha-Cha part missed an important point.
In the comics, Cha-Cha wears the blue mask and Hazel wears the pink one.
When talking about Dave, why was have the footage from Doom Patrol? I get that Gerard Way worked on the comics that both are based on, but come on, they're nothing alike.

I think with the conductor, they didn’t give him a mask since they changed the orchestra. Instead of having them perform it so as to cause the apocalypse, Vanya took advantage of her postition in the orchestra so as to cause the apocalypse. As Allison said “The violin is her lightning Rod”. It wouldn’t make sense to have the conductor suddenly become a villain.

I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one who noticed this! They can’t even keep the gay male couples on tv shows separate.
“At least Lupo brought something to the table with his appearance.” Patch brings representation. She is a woman of colour in a largely white male profession (policing) and of course the same is true of the actor (underrepresented in the television industry). That is important. The Netflix series casting is an improvement because it is more diverse.

I kinda just assumed that Klaus was the reason why Ben appeared older and without his uniform. As stated when he spoke to Sir Reginald, he was told that he hadn't even scratched the surface of his abilities, so maybe he's able to change how the dead appear to him and has just allowed Ben to grow up along side him while he grew up? Without realising it

Snyder's Watchmen was one of the most fateful comic book adaptations ever made, along with Sin City
While I think the original comic book characters look really cool and I adore Gerard Way’s art… I think they would’ve looked too cheesy in a Netflix show. That type of stuff is good in comic books but not really in an adult TV show. Also, I’m glad that they diversified the cast because although I’m normally all for keeping characters the same as their original appearance… It seems a little bit unrealistic that children from all around the world would all be white.
The comics version of The Handler reminds me of Minion from Megamind
What set me off was the last episode where the temps break in the theater and were seriously just shooting at the characters right in front of them but can't land a single shot.
Classic action show trope. Professional killers that can't hit the broad side of a barn.
I’m glad they made the difference so apparent. If they just made exactly what was in the comic, it wouldn’t be as good as it is. It wouldn’t be marketable to the wider, adult audience that the show deserves

what yall need to understand is that gerard way himself signed off on the nerflix adaptation's character designs, considering he's an executive producer on the show too, so it isnt like the netflix adaptation isnt true to the comics... if he didnt like it, it wouldnt be so.

God, you 2 had such high hopes. Its a shame how absolutely god-awful that last season was, took a complete U-Turn from one of the best shows on Netflix to a sloppy, rushed, overly-busy plot. Hopefully this next season's better.

“It’s hard to adapt comics to the screen just look at snyder’s watchmen for proof” most people I’ve seen talk about that film absolutely love it and praise it unless this guy is talking about some hardships that happened behind the scenes.
I thought it was great. I struggle to think of a way it could have been a better adaptation.

Hot Topic is a shell of what it once was. Its not true goth anymore, although there are traces, its all about fandoms and bands steered more towards younger girls rather than metal and punk things. Sure they have to change with the times to stay in business, but nothing about kpop, harry potter, and doctor who is goth. BUT that said i still shop there sometimes.

I think it was a good idea that they changed the main villain to Lenard because I feel like the conductor is too cliché. Every superhero movie or series always has a villain that also has powers, but Lenard shows that anyone can manipulate people, even if they have powers. It also made it less cheesy lol

I prefer him in the series. I'm glad they didnt make it 100% accurate. Making it more realistic and aesthetically pleasing was the best route to take

Also the rest of this is so wrong in so many ways, they mix up Hazel and Cha Cha in the comics, Carmichael is IN THE SHOW, and Luther's body is not CGI! They don't show it because he's insecure about it, and is constantly wearing clothes that cover up his whole mody.

you didn't include hazel and chacha being swapped in the show (in comics, chacha is the blue one, hazel is the pink one) and chacha on the show was a female unlike in comics where both of them are male

The comic characters just seem more unique and dynamic i love the show but the comic just feels more creative and unique i mean come on a hyper intelligent goldfish in a steampunk watersuit leading a organization of time traveling assassins? You have to admit that sounds cool!
Its harder to do that though on screen. I agree with you but I get why they made those changes.
And of course let’s not forget a sentient Eiffel Tower powered by a mad scientist with a terminal illness that eats organic matter that he obsorbs. You can’t make this stuff up aha

I mean doom patrol has cannibal butts, a donkey that can turn into a blackhole and a reality warping bodybuilder who lives on a sentient nonbinary telepoting street, a guy who can gain knoledge about people when he eats their facial hair and a villian literally named "animal-vegetable-mineral man". I think the producers where just nervous that no one would watch UA if it wasnt more grounded.

I honestly really dislike the comic art style. Especially Klaus. He looks like he's wearing a diaper. The Netflix version of Klaus is 100% better

I don't this was mentioned but I'm pretty sure in the comic "Hazel" was Cha-Cha and "Cha-Cha" was Hazel 😂 so basically the blue mask was originally meant for Cha-Cha and the pink mask was originally for Hazel. I hope that made sense I'm not great at describing things 😂 but if you search up something along the lines of "Umbrella Academy comic hazel" it will come up with Hazel from the comics in the pink mask 😂 it makes a lot more sense when you see it 😂😂😂

I think we all can acknowledge that, although there are differences with comics, how remarkable the aesthetics of the series were in the first 2 seasons :)

Honestly i was pretty disappointed when they didn't transform ellen page into the comic white violin or something at least closer to that, she felt more boring and i don't think the white eye contacts really were it, ellen page captured vanya perfectly in my opinion but her character went down hill when she went evil, it felt almost cringy sadly, but i still enjoyed it and cant wait for season 2✨😻

If you're talking about Klaus, I'm pretty sure it's been either touched on or confirmed in the comics.
And he doesn't have flight or telekinesis, but I'm almost sure he already had the immortality in the comics
But technically the fishbowl guy was in the umbrella academy except he is the boss of all not just five
