The year is 2040. All cars are electric. There is no need for a grille at all anymore. BMW simply cannot cope. They pivot and become a barbecue manufacturer. Weber is their primary competitor. They each fight for display space at Home Depot. I choose the Weber because it’s still naturally aspirated.

I love how he says it's "Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde". That's literally how I described my M340i. The car has this amazing dual personality. If you run it in ECO PRO or Comfort, it is very relaxing and efficient. If you put it into Sport (+), the car comes alive and is ready to play ball. It's fantastic!
Everyone is talking about the monster grill, but the thing looks like a 2013 Infinity G37 coupe from the A pillar back.

I might even like the grill if the rest of the design didn’t look like crap. They gave it a brutish grille but it looks dainty from the a pillar back
The back from B pillar onwards also reminds me of the last gen Accord Coupe. If anything, the Accord Coupe had the Hofmeister kink and this doesn’t!! 🤣

@@tonicipriani That is true. This is pretty much the same engine as the twin turbo in the E90/92 Gen. I remember when that came out in 08 there was a magazine that asked which would you buy, M3 or Challenger SRT....the BM got many votes, ask that question now......Not so sure anymore. I'd take the Challenger SRT over the M4 version of this, and that Challenger hasn't changed much design wise. That being said there will always be the BMW fanboys.

I feel sorry for BMW's grille designer because he is trying his best to get fired but the execs still love his work. It's like the Seinfeld episode where George is trying to get fired by the Yankees but keeps failing at failing.

Why though? The grille looks pretty good, reminiscent of older models with vertical grilles. Also, compared to many modern cars the actual grille is reasonable sized, especially compared to its siblings X7 and 7er,its basically a small square with some side intakes.

It's for the chinese market, plain and simple. They like humongous grills for some reason.
@@detaart I don't get this reason either. The rich Chinese who can afford luxury cars overwhelmingly prefer being chauffeur driven. BMW and Merc even make extra long wheelbase versions of their loewr model cars to cater for them. Coupes like this 4 series won't sell well there.

@@lmythreya LWB cars are preferred because today many Chinese families have only one car (some in the large cities have 2) for the entire family (with children+parents=7-8ppl) so space is a big factor for them in car shopping. people usually don't buy vans in china for personal use so LWB sedans and SUVs are popular. and I yeah 4 series doesn't sell well in China and I don't think anyone likes this grill there at all LOL
Test drove this car 3 times and it is nothing but awesome. Drove the Audi S5 and the MB E350 coupes and there is no comparison. Looks are subjective and happen tho think it has a great body style including the new grille...which gives it a more aggressive look.
People don't like change and most of those people are the older ones like your parents or grandparents. So give it a try and I'm sure you will agree.

The worst part isn’t even the grille it’s the lack of hoffmeister kink and sharp body line going down the side. They need to bring back the 3 series coupe, don’t change anything just shorter, lighter and two doors.

The chinese market wanted a bigger grill. And since it's the biggest market by far, they obeyed.
@@amadexi china is only like 4-5% bigger than the euro market according to statistica. So euro/NA markets bigger than their asia one. Unless they think they can grow massively in china. Personally I think they just messed up.

I love that front end, I've had 4 bmws and loved them. Actually had the brand new at the time 335i coupe 2007 (the first time they came out with 3.0 twin turbo). I love this grill, i think it makes the car look a lot more expensive and sophisticated

Nice review gents, I just came across your channel. The grill does polarise people and like a boil, it does grow on you I tend to walk around the rear of mine when exiting the car or not looking back at it. Though behind the wheel you do not see it.

I didnt like it either but the moment I saw the new M4 in person I kinda changed my opinion. Im still not the biggest fan but I dont think its bad either. Very bold move by BMW but I think the criticism will decline as soon as we see a lot of these on the road.
@@jamierietkerk1796 I could see BMW potentially having a hard time doing good units with these. The grille is very controversial, many people are appalled by it. Coupes in general are dying out, and the A5 simply looks better.

Grill looks amazing
Been watching you guys for a long time at this point - you've always had great camera work and music, but it's amazing to see how much more.... studio-quality esque this is. The voiceovers have even more soul, the camera cutaways and angles add a whole new layer of sight, the chemistry between ya'll has gotten even better, etc. It's really cool, congrats!

More frustrated than he should be. Awesome car, just so much fun to drive. Love the styling (and grill) as well, but thats purely personal taste.
My problem with this car's exterior is not the grill. It's the rest. The car does not look distinctive enough on its own.
Merge the grill together, and the car becomes a Genesis.
Merge and reduce the grilll, and it becomes an Infiniti.
Merge and shape the grill into a triangle and it becomes an Alfa.
Everything from the front/tail lights, to the mirrors and windows follows a set design trend plaguing multiple big brands. The car is not recognisable as a BMW, unless people look at the badge or the grill. And that, to me, is a flawed design.
The design is a but different until you drive it and understand this is the new school of M4 and such. What a powerful engine! What an incredible car my lord!

True shame on the 440i being heavy, soft and "un"special, something no BMW should be. It looks quite awful too, not even the grille, the entire thing. The sedan is far better. Would be nice if they made a 2-series RWD sedan based off the upcoming new coupe, which seems to have become the new torchbearer for anything fun from BMW.

I thought this was called an M Performance BMW, not an M-Sport BMW. M-Sport I thought was just the styling kit for models like the 28i / 30i
2 different types
Your profile picture exactly describes the grill of this car
So the three M levels are full M cars like the M4, then there are M Performance models like the M440i which aren't full M cars but still developed by M division, and finally M Sport which is just a trim level available across different regular engine options and generally includes the M Performance bodykit plus any Sport options like suspension/seats etc.
All gets a bit confusing considering how many cars have M somwhere in the their name, not to mention the fact you can add further M Performance packs to all 3 levels.
Audi probably does it a bit better with RS4, S4 and A4 S-line etc.
