One of my favorite lines I've heard was back in WWII when someone asked a Swiss what would they do if Germany invaded Switzerland. The reply was, "Well, each of us would shoot twice then go home." (The German army was twice the size of Swiss population at the time.)

In america, 85% of our citizen are armed. Our entire country is an army. There 8million people in Switzerland, American has over 400million registered guns lmfao not including all the ghost guns we have.

Lots of cities are 1h or less from Zurich. Basel, Bern, Lucerne, St. Gallen, Winterthur and some more are reachable within 1h.

and some are quite a bit more. such as Geneva or Ticino.

Bruh Geneva is about as far away as you can get from Zurich and it’s only 3 hours away, Switzerland is mini.

Personally I love how he openly admits his bias of living in a country without personal ownership of firearms makes him unqualified to debate it with people from other countries. I wish more people on the internet were the same.
In general I think its weird to tell people who live in another country, or on the other side of the planet, how they should live.

The so-called 'American Sniper' (Chris Kyle) was murdered at the firing range by an acquaintance. Tom's statement was a little naive. Action beats reaction.

@@thePronto perhaps, however, this firing range has very strict firing procedures, requiring you to be laying down before even loading the rifle. The breaking safety rules surrounded by military trained enthusiasts would have plenty of opportunity to enforce the rules before an action happened.

@@donjones4719 It is very silly to rob a gun shop or attempt murder at a shooting range. But robberies and attempted murders happen everywhere. The point Tom makes is that a murder at a gun range is no more likely than a murder anywhere else because being surrounded by trained military men essentially balances out the increased presence of firearms.

If someone speaks swiss german, then even most germans won't understand it (south germans mostly do, their dialect is similar)
Spotting a swiss person in germany is very easy, the dialect just shines through :)

not sure if you caught it, but even toms subtitle guy (a german) made a mistake. southern germanic dialects are very hard to understand for speakers of "official" german.

The guy in this video spoke his very best and clear Standard German, not Swiss German. And he did a very good job at it. If he had spoken in Swiss German, I assure you, not even the Germans would have been able to understand most of it.

The fact he's laying down helps though, right? (not saying Tom isn't a good shot, but it helps?)

@@agustinvenegas5238 Laying down while shooting does indeed make you much more likely to hit your target well as it is much more stable than standing up or shooting from a crouching position. You can compete in many different ways of shooting, at very varying distances. What's a good score in one competition might be a rather disapointing score in another because of the varying difficulty. All competitions are equally difficult though, as your competitors have just the same situation as you.

Those diopter sights are really good for that sort of shooting

Those rifles are very accurate and the sites super high quality. The 90 or 57 both shoot very well indeed at 300m. Good shooting I agree but a lot of people would be surprised at how accurate they can be with those rifles.

That's not very far. I'm not a very good marksman but I would have had a significantly tighter group.

It is nearly standart in all swiss shooting ranges, where you shoot at a range of 300m.

It not only tracks the position of the shot. It also checks if the shot was fired from the right booth. So if i shoot from booth 7 to target 8 the shot wont be recognised. This is also done with microphones

It's not complicated at all, that's one of the reasons it's such a good idea.

That's what I've seen happen also. I'm English and saw a fellow European getting a little "blasé" with a pistol and the range master came down on him like a tonne of bricks. Safety is a critical component of good gun ownership and doesn't take anything away from the pleasure of shooting.

I was wondering what would happen if I would hit the wall (for whatever reason). Sure, the wall is thick enough for the projectile to not penetrate it.
So the question I have is how far and in which directions could a projectile bounce off the wall? Isn't there still a chance for a "freak accident"?

Weapons laws (weapons in general, not just firearms) are universally idiotic. I have yet to find a jurisdiction where this isn't the case. As near as I can tell, politicians for the most part seem to realize that they don't understand the subject and need expert testimony to help them out - but for some reason government institutions have an uncanny ability to find "weapons experts" that are just shockingly incompetent.

Agree. I just hope that technical measures don't dominate the discussion here. Culture makes a big difference too. Gun worship, guns as a symbol of masculinity and power, gun marketing, gun politicization, mental health in general: all are very different in Switzerland. If America could aspire to a pre-Columbine culture, on both sides, then gun control would be less of an issue.

@@jaysoto1182 they've fought vehemently to prevent closing the gunshow loophole, which is how a lot of firearms are legally sold to illicit weapons' dealers and have impeded attempts for waiting periods and mental health being part of background checks. The ease of access to a weapon also leads to increased suicide rates. The NRA used to actually advocate for gun owners, but they're now only manufacturer lobbyists. They'll drum up fear when dems are in power, causing weapon and ammo sales to skyrocket. Then during repub terms, they consolidate power and ensure manufacturers are protected from potential lawsuits. They've been very good at their job, until recently when it turns out the ceo was siphoning money off the top for himself.
Culture is never a monolith, but it's clearly different how we venerate firearms compared to anywhere else in the world. There are literally more weapons than people, with nearly 400,000 of them unregistered (that is more than most countries have total). We literally value access to firearms are a more important right than access to food, water, housing and definitely healthcare. Obviously not everyone thinks this is the right way to do things, but clearly not enough people think differently enough to change any of this.
There is clear evidence that access to a firearm increases successful suicide rates, which is the majority of gun deaths in the US. Instead of coming anywhere near trying to address this problem, instead the NRA got the CDC banned from even studying gun violence as a morbidity factor.

I thought the point is to scare the users into following rules. The word "lawsuit" is enough to put the heebie-jeebies into anyone. 😁

@@largol33t1 The Swiss don't have as much of a contrarian attitude as, say, Americans; you will generally see them following the rules out of respect rather than needing to have a fear motivator like lawsuits.

@@justinfiorini3142 More seriously; that's what the foot-thick wall of concrete is for; since only certain types of bullets are allowed to be fired at this range, if its able to make it over the wall it would safely pass over the road without endangering motorists.

Most countries have height maximums for vehicles, so I imagine when applying for an oversize permit for the giraffe, they would close the shooting range 😁

A lot of countries prohibit live exotic animals in circuses due to the horrible conditions they are typically held in. Not sure about Switzerland but it might not be allowed there.

@@ottersirotten4290 Well, i cant say for sure, but i know a lot of people eventually as they get older get rid of guns as they are expensive to shoot, and peoples physical abilities may not allow them to get out and hunt or go to the range to shoot as often.

I was a Marine stationed near San Diego that had setup a little bit more advanced than this that ranged between 100 out to 500 yards.

I used to work for a major telecoms company headquartered in Illinois (you can probably google which one >.>!).. In many US states, they have microphones planted at major intersections in cities whereby the local police authorities can use this mic system to triangulate gunshots to specific city blocks, often times specific buildings. Of course, this is essentially a larger scale version of what is going on with these sensors, but it just goes to show how sound wave propagation is a sound (excuse the pun) method of determining a point position.

Shot finders using microphones has been common tech for over a decade. Military uses it to find threats. Police use it in cities to monitor gang activity etc

Is it really growing? That's a positive given how small it is. Firearms history in the UK is fascinating given how unrestricted the general populace has been since before the 1900s. Except if you were a Jacobite in Scotland.

If someone wanted to go down to that road and shoot at cars, they don't need the shooting range to do so.

In England we don't have that. Our national tax is based on income and property ownership but the government works it out for us. We get a letter either once a year (or once a month depending on what you choose). VAT is usually already on the item when we buy it IE on the shelf it's a pound for a can of coke, the cashier rings it up, we pay 1 pound

Triangulation is really fun when you start to think about it.

It's the Sius Ascor system they use all over Europe. Very expensive but very accurate.
There are some open-source projects with microphones and a raspberry pi which do the trick as well, if you happen to own a range and don't want to fork out money for a Sius Ascor (which is German and thus very user-unfriendly designed).

@@NighttimeNubbs Yea it's the same here in the US as there. There are virtually zero incidents of purposeful shootings at ranges... it'd be suicide. And they also don't f*ck around here with newbies not following the safety rules to the T. At my range, one small mistake gets you permanently banned for life. They have a whole 'box of shame' of membership cards they took from people, sitting behind the counter.

There are ranges in Switzerland that have cows grazing above the targets. Raise the gun up by about 3-4 inches and you would hit them.

Funny enough, that's what I how I refer to rifles, most of the time. "Donnerstock", meaning thunder-stick.

We have deer on our range regularly. We have had to stop shooting due to deer standing in front of the 300 yard berm

They are possibly thinking: "Nice how quiet it is here down in the valley. One can't sleep up on the Alp when the army is shooting it's artillery right in to the rock beneath us all night. Even the cupboards of the herdsman were shaking up there." True story, I was herding cows in the Swiss mountains at age 14 together with my 15 year old boss. Teenagers sleep better than adults and we were naturally quite happy to leave the parents down in the valley and run the farm on our own terms :-)

dude, in the area of Pilatus (Mountain) in Schwarzenberg, there is a really crazy one. you can allmost touch the bullets which are flying through the air overhead.

Literally pass under the one near Tuggen twice a day in a bus. Sometimes when i look at it i hope they calculated for higher vehicles😅

What about if a bullet skims the top of the wall and loses velocity and falls into a car

@Robert Swann You underestimate the velocity of a round. I bet if you go outside and throw a .308 cartridge as hard as you can at a car window it will shattter it.

@@aryanpashtun416 I can guarantee you that you can't throw a .308 BULLET (the part that leaves the barrel) hard enough to even crack a windshield or side window. A .308 bullet weighs around 9 to 11 grams. the 5.56 bullets they were shooting are much lighter and would love energy much faster after grazing a concrete wall, not to mention using aerodynamics from deformation, making it slow even faster, and most likely not hit directly point-on.

Honestly a sign would be a good idea. A startled driver could potentially cause dangerous situations on the road.

I remember a traffic stop in Switzerland while jet fighters taxied from underground hangars on one side of the road to the runway on the other. I guess that's just what happens in a country with limited level terrain in the valley floors.

@@zanderwohl sure there are... But 'wasting' such space make rarely sense. A flat part of land could be quite expensive, a lot of the small area of switzerland is either steep/mountain or near urban areas... Its all about optimal use of the space & since it can be done save as shown in the vid no concerns about it ✌🏼

I'm interested. What's the solution for sound pollution. Roads makes sense, but over other public spaces. Supersonic bullet going above you makes a fairly annoying and loud sound.

Are you from Switzerland? I’m curious if you’re only allow to discharge your firearms at the range or if you have enough property you can do it at home?

@@TealJosh there are sound barriers around similar to ones you might find around highways, since most of the noise is made at the gun. plus at least the army rifle is not as loud as one might think after even just 100m .

@@solless2504 In theory on private property when you can ensure that you can't accidentally hit someone (fencing, warning signs, etc.), you don't have neighbors that mind the noise, manage environmental impact, etc., then yes. Practically it's very unlikely that you have such big and remote private land around here where this works out, Switzerland is not that big :)

actually they weren’t speaking there native language but german. i am a swiss and if they would speak swiss german it would have bean almost impossible to translate it to english
