I love how well black widow is rendered in this scene. While literally the beginning of the movie showed her being badass, in this scene, she showed her intelligence, combat strategy, agility and also her humanity. I also love how strong she is. Literally after getting slapped from the hulk,She kicked the mind-controlled Hawkeye's ass.
Back when marvel understood a strong woman character didn’t have to be a Mary sue. They push this strong woman narrative when they hit it out of the ballpark in the first.

I love how much is exposition is accomplished in this scene without having to sink into unnecessary off-screen narrative or derivative dialogue: Black Widow's combat intelligence but also her humanity are shown in her abject fear of the Hulk, Hulk's power (which is further demonstrating by pitting him against Thor, the character who had been the strongest Avenger until that moment) and the degree of rage that is pent up in him, Thor's heroism, the power of Thor's hammer, Thor's viking-like thirst for battle... Avengers was never a ground-breaking film, but it's an absolute master class in how film story-telling can be done right.
Avengers 1 was pretty groundbreaking. There was not a movie quite like this before
I just love Thor here. He's the only one, for obvious reasons, who would have any kind of chance with Hulk, so he really gives it his all here. "We are not your enemies, Banner! Try to think!" And then he's like, "Okay, battle time" lol

I like that little detail. It shows how Thor sees Hulk as someone who can be reasoned with and not just a monster he has to beat.
Edit: Everyone saying that "hULk IsN't bAnNEr" missed the point I was trying to make. That point being Thor is a much better person in this movie than he was at the beginning of his own. Thor had no idea that Hulk and Bruce were two different people, he was just trying to calm him down. The Thor in the beginning of his first movie would have caved Hulk's skull in and called it a day.
Calling Hulk Banner is the one thing that pisses him off. He shouldn’t have been trying to engage conversation with Banner. He was merely a passenger with no control here. He should’ve been speaking with the Hulk itself

Just realized Thor's horrible realization of all that is Hulk..his face goes from "Holy hell!" to "Holy hell, what have gotten myself into?" as he gets his real first look at Hulk. Great acting by Hemsworth.
Chris Hemsworth’s acting is underrated.
This is Thor's first encounter with Hulk in the mcu. Imagine being him in this scene. He's probably fought hundreds of monsters at this point with a lot of them being many times his size. And yet one of the strongest opponents he's ever met was this big green angry guy who moments before was a mere human and yet is currently tossing him around like nothing. I know in this scene he isn't necessarily trying to fight him just keep him busy while everyone else either gets to safety or repairs the ship. But it's still gotta be crazy to him.
But, eventually, Hulk would outlast him and grow angry/strong enough to kill him.

Black Widow has a lot of combat knowledge. She knew her pistols wouldn’t do shit to Hulk, so she shot the gas pipe instead to buy herself a few precious seconds. It probably saved her life, Thor bailed her out just in time.

I like how when he’s chasing Black Widow, it’s darker and more confined. Feels more like a horror movie where the hero can’t fight a powerful villain, only survive. But as soon as Thor comes in, it becomes brighter with more open space, more like a proper action scene between two evenly powered opponents.

But it doesn't make sense. How does the hammer know where a floor and just doesn't fall through everything? In theory the hammer should fall through the earth's crust it's so heavy.

His surprise and apprehension in this scene makes such an impact and really builds a sense of fear in the audience.

This scene was scary. One of the last times Hulk was cool. That must be terrifying to try your best to run from hulk.
