    Kyung-Wha Chung performs Walton violin concerto with Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by André Previn. The occasion was William Walton's 80th birthday gala at Royal Festival Hall, London with the composer himself and princess Alexandra present in the Royal box.
    Ms Chung's encounter with William Walton goes back 10 years prior, in 1972. She was recording Walton concerto with Previn to mark the composer's 70th anniversary, and with no prior notice, Walton visited the recording session to encourage the young violinist.
    Walton was duly impressed, and later commented about her in his letter to Walter Legge, the legendary record producer , 'Superb! As good as Heifetz or Francescatti'.
    I. Andante tranquillo 0:49
    II. Presto capriccioso alla napolitana 11:37
    III. Vivace 18:10

    Walton himself might be very surprised by Ms. Chung's superb rendition. This is a historical performance. I am in total awe. I have been a fan of her for a long time, but this rendition gave me a total shock. Thank you, thank you so much, @twofinedays, for the many great videos of Ms. Chung's rare performances.

    Chung brings such intensity, passion, and drama to everything she plays. One can register that just by listening, but It's really exhilarating to watch her do it. Thanks for this very valuable post.

    Ignoring for a second the solo violin part and considering the work as a whole, it’s an absolutely earth shattering masterpiece IMHO. All three of Walton’s string concerti are like that

    Wow! The audio fidelity much improved over previous postings, it sounds almost as good as it did on March 29th, 1982. Thanks to twofinedays for reposting this performance. It reminds us that, while other violinists have matched Chung's technical ability to produce sounds from the instrument, none (at least since the advent of recorded music) have matched her artistic prowess at playing the instrument in the service of music. She, compared to those others, has brought me closest to an empathetic state of personal intimacy with the great human spirits of composers long deceased.

      It was the Kyung Wha Chung/Andre Previn recording from the early 1970's that introduced me to what became one of my top 3 favourite violin concertos. Absolutely love this work.

      I've always felt she plays this concerto just a tad too muscular. It's basically a very lyrical piece. But what do I know?

    • @iCyclone
      @iCyclone 4 개월 전 +1

      @@frankstein9982 It's lyrical for sure, but as with lots of Romantic concerti (and I consider this Romantic, albeit very late), the composer has thrown in lots of virtuosic passagework which I believe the player should handle in a muscular way. In my opinion, she's lyrical where she needs to be, muscular where she needs to be. But, anyhoo, it's so subjective. There's no right or wrong here. I'm just saying her approach works for me, but I respect that it might not for you.
