Holy shit, I’ve never felt this bad for a fighter after a loss. Alex asking Zombie if he was sure he wanted to continue right before finishing him, him saying he had to consider retirement after the loss and breaking down crying after Joe left the octagon, then his wife (?) coming in with a really worried look on her face.
I’m too young to have experienced most of Zombies career, that’s how long he’s been around, but the bits I saw I really loved.
Hoping to see him get one more win before he hangs up the gloves for good, cause this wasn’t even a fight, it was a one-sided beatdown.

Asian cultures emphasize education far over sports. Even in South Korea, a child growing up is taking 4 or 5 different tutoring courses to improve their math, science, language, history, etc and hardly has anytime to develop their athletic prowess. The academic competition is so tough that by the time South Korean kids are in high school, they put an average of 10 to 12 hours a day in academic studies outside of school hours. Which means 18 to 20 hours of each day is devoted to study. Yes sounds extreme but this is the level academic competition in South Korea. How else can a small country with hardly any natural resources like Oil, precious metals, natural gas, etc become a leader in just about every major category of life. All done on tenacious work ethics and brain power.

TKZ had memorable fights but he’s definitely not the best Asian fighter, I believe there’s better Asian fighters out there that just doesn’t get to showcase themselves to the world.

@John Lee you clearly are not getting the point. Maybe he’s not a legend to you, but for what he’s done for Asian fighters and Korean fighters on top of being a great fighter in general, he’s absolutely a legend specifically in Asian community. Just like people say bisping is a legend even though that’s a strong word for him as well but you have to recognize what he did for Brit’s being the first champ.. Legend does get thrown out a lot. Anyone can be a legend to anyone but it gets overused because most people don’t mean it when they say it. In this case, I think they do. Justin Bieber isn’t a legend to me and a lot of people think he is. Hopefully you get the point

I met him in person in 2013 as a 12 year old, he signed my shirt and I told him that I wanted to see him hold the belt one day. Stuck with him through the Aldo loss, then he had to serve for 2 years and yet he’s done things in that octagon many fighters can only dream about doing. The twister, the 6 second finish, and so many amazing fight of the night performances. Zombie was a go getter, a warrior, a soldier, he never quit in there no matter dire the situation, took his beatings like a man, and he was respectful to every fighter and the fans. A real example of a great fighter that never won the big one but he won the hearts of the people, gave a us a real reason to enjoy watching fights regardless of the outcome.

Korean Zombie is a great fighter, from almost being cut to pulling off the first twister submission, 7 second KO of mark hominick, defeating and submitting Dustin Porier in his prime, eventually losing fights but always entertaining, war ready, but now very flat footed, a lot slower than his prime, and military enlistment coming back still knocking out younger fighters, he has done it all, but just couldnt pass the barrier to get the title.

"I was in good condition and wasn't tired. I thought I was ready, but it felt like there was a great wall in front of me. Now I feel like I can never be a champion. Maybe it's time to stop"
I've been watching MMA shows for almost 20 years and never became this emotional before. KZ has been fighting in UFC for 9 years and probably this was his last shot to be a champ. His post-fight interview somehow reminds me of our life. You do everything you can do to make your dream come true, but sometimes you realize it might never come true. Then you think maybe it's time to stop. Such an extreme frustration he would have felt there.
All his UFC colleagues he fought 9 years ago are now all gone. All retired or kicked out already. He is the only survivor.

I know exactly how he is feeling; you go into something motivated only to find yourself reaching a wall you just can't overcome despite your best, and you find yourself questioning yourself and/or what is going to be the next step of your life given your failure. It is downright depressing and I don't blame him on wanting to quit to do something else in life.
