    Here is the Nas verse. Now, listen and read along. And while you're at it, research the people he mentioned:
    I am Sugar Ray Robinson, Booker T. Washington
    W. E. B. Du Bois, I'm the modern one
    Yelling at Senators, Presidents, Congressmen
    We got a problem that needs some acknowledgement
    I am no prison commodity, not just a body you throw in a cell
    For any reason, just to bother me
    Just for your quota, so it's rest in peace to Sean Bell
    Sleep in peace Eric Garner (Sandra)
    Every street, every corner
    Conspiracy, new world order
    I spoke to Tamir Rice mom and she told me "be strong"
    It won't be long 'til it's justice
    They won't have votes but refuse the discussion
    On how certain cops they shoot us for nothing
    Revolution is coming

      +Wilkine Brutus W.E.B. Du Bois detested Booker T. Washington, who subjugated black students in the South to cater to the White Southerners. Ah, if Nas knew that, such contradictions wouldn't exist.

    • @WilkineBrutus
      @WilkineBrutus 8 년 전 +15

      Sonorous But Washington shouldn't be defined by his flaws and nor should Du Bois, who sparked controversy with the "talented tenth." And, as such, Nas's entire verse should be defined by his mere name dropping of men who contributed to black empowerment. It was a great verse.

    • @sonorous6419
      @sonorous6419 8 년 전 +2

      +Wilkine Brutus
      Completely agree about not "defining someone through flaws." But, this one is hardly permissible. I don't know how much you have read from - or about - Booker T. Washington, but there is a strong incentive against his philosophy of submission. As a student of African-American literature, I can quote Ralph Ellison, Richard Wright and James Baldwin, amongst a host of other contemporary African-American intellectuals that have criticized Washington's ideology as a threat against Afro-Americanism.
      Also, I see why Nas would call himself the "modern W.E.B. Du Bois," although its completely harrowing, because he sponsored a Hip-Hop scholarship at the Harvard W.E.B. Du Bois Research Institute at Hutchins Center. Entry for 1 person per year, hardly accounts for much of a "scholarship."
      This is the Issue I have Wilkine, and Im completely not alone in this disposition, that of politicizing Art and making a shame of the medium. This song, falls into the same category of protest Novel, or music, and reduces its efficacy as either. And I'll use Kendrick Lamar's TPAB as my crux. Kendrick's album blends both beautifully; rhythmically. And you have to search for it. Just like you had to in understanding the pivotal American novel -- the greatest by an African-American -- of the 21st century: Invisible Man.
      If this is how you define a great verse, I seriously advise you to consider Kendrick's album.

    • @kaizzen7942
      @kaizzen7942 4 년 전 +7

      The message is too strong for people to handle I guess. Also it shows us in a different light than what they how they want us to be seen. The more people realise that we're people too, not just mindless thugs, but people with innocent lives and feelings, the more people go against them.

    mentioned this before via my other social media, but for those who might care, the building that was used to film the church scenes in this music video is the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Brooklyn New York. as the adopted mixed race son of an Irish working class family from Brooklyn, I know this building very well, since my parents were raised under its parish. my uncle, a priest from the order of Redemptorists, is retired out of this very church. As a singer, I've done countless funerals, Sunday Masses, and other such services at the very altar Usher was praying to. many wonderful people have gotten married, baptized, eulogized, and remembered at OLPH. I'm glad Usher chose this important piece of Brooklyn history to notate this very real problem. keep fighting the good fight everyone, never give up hope #ibelieveblacklivesmatter

    It is truly sad to see African American lives be swept away. Many of my kinfolks are disappearing right before my eyes. The pain that I had to endure as so many of my kind dies for no reason. We are indeed in chains and we have to have shame put on us. Even though many people die everyday, I can feel that people do not want to die in the hands of others. So many people being disrespected and harmed each day. It is truly a disappointment to see where our world has became. May God protect us all in this dangerous world. One day, hopefully, we can all love instead of hate each other. One day...

We've helped many of our people through our respective professions. The plan was to relocate to Ghana. After watching 13th, we changed our minds. Running away is the cowards way out. We're staying here. We're ready to diie for the cause, if need be. We have our weapons, all licensed. and ready. We're ready to go to war.

    13th brought me here. Helped me gain some perspective I needed. In a time when stats can be skewed to whoever's narrative, it's good to have stats that show how they were derived. Some of the best music slides under the radar like this song. Thank you Usher for such a heartfelt song. This is the thought provoking song I needed.

    It's good to see these black artist using their platforms to speak out against what is happening to the black society in America. It goes to show the what black individuals are going through not only affects them individually but the entire black population regardless of our class status and culture or whatever region we are from.

    Donald Glover’s “this is America” reminded me of this song. I’m glad more artists are bringing up policy brutality and the issues that POC face.

    I am not black in any way possible (still a minority tho), and this message not only touched me, but blew me away. People often say that modern music isn't real music, but just because music might be different from than, does not mean it is not good music. This video showed that music STILL carries a message when we need it. Usher, Nas, and all in the production of this song, good job.
    Note: Usher is aging well. :)

In France , all this does not exist but when i see my country disaster by racism , i just want to come back and fight me for equality like all our heroes . Stay strong my brothers , #BlackLiveMatter
