    If a hook were added on the feet it could hang upside-down like a bat, hanging like that would save power. Also wheels extentions could be added on the calfs and shins that fold down similar to SpaceX lading legs to use gravity on hills and mountains to propel it forward extending its effective range. Perhaps using the turning of the wheels to either store energy in the wheels in a spring for a boost to the wheels or convert to electric to extend the battery life

      @@adefay2811 maybe not necessarily at the feet but a hook like function at any part of the robot body so that when it is doing some aerial surveillance, it can easily identify a tree branch or sth n hook itself to it, if the environment allows. Maybe it can help keep the propellers at rest or reduce the power consumed since it will just be hanging there. Idk if that is what it meant by save power.

    Leonardo's control systems and stability are very good. As for the practical use, he can be like a patrol drone on mountains. Ex- 2013's floods in Uttarakhand killed hundreds and misplaced thousands. In such situation, a more robust drone like Leonardo could help in patroling the mountains quicker than a full size Helicopter. In the rescue effort of the floods, some rescue helicopters also crashed. So a larger more heavily built Leonardo robot cna definitely do such jobs and provide surveillance safely. 💯

      Yes, some large wheels as feet are the next evolution of this for sure. Mostly 2 wheel motion, fixed wheel/leg for difficult terrain then switch to drone mode for longer distances and/or getting out of tricky stuck situations... Need a dense atmosphere of course, probably not good for Mars as too thin.

    I wonder, building on their realization that the skateboard reduces energy consumption, I’m curious if retractable small wheels in the under “foot” of Leo would allow for efficient travel over surfaces that don’t require intricate bi-ped movements, but be able to be retracted in environments not suitable for that travel and revert back to the propeller/walking method. Can’t wait to see what will be capable in my field by the time I graduate another fantastic video Veritasium, thank you for what you do!

    Slackline tips :
    - keep your legs flexed and relaxed
    - you can't stop the movement of the line, try to control it without trying to cancel it
    - the leg that you raise to take a step also helps you stabilize, you shouldn't try to keep your two legs on the rope

      Yeah, it's got a future, only the top half though. The rest of it doesn't really have much going for it, doesn't help with improving robots that can walk, and drones that can fly already exist and are as good as it gets (there are ways for both to improve, but that's in material science, software, etc.).
      Well that's what I see at least. Maybe it'll prove me wrong and can do something better that nothing else could, but just can't see it. All I see is a quadcopter drone with "legs" on it, and those "legs" behave more like a bipod than legs.

      Soon the robots and drones sent to Mars will bleep n blop to converse about how they think they are in a simulation controlled by humans
      When The first group of humans arrive

    It’s funny to me that they need to defend the fact that they are “not cheating” by adding propellers. There shouldn’t be any rules, the point is to be efficient and creative!

      Efficiency comes from setting boundaries. For example they'll never perfect robots balancing naturally if every single manufacturer uses propellers to patch up any failing in that area. Nonetheless I agree, the design process is their own and it will never be cheating unless it's in a regulated competition.

Whether it’s flying or walking, it’s still efficient and does things that neither drones nor walking robot can do.

    It looks like what makes this a compete design is whether parts can be redundant meaning it can self correct itself if it breaks a leg or a fan.
    Also the video did not mention whether there was any gyroscopic stabilization going on.

      @@williamherd7251 I agree, if you use all fans on constant power using a single big fan would be more effective. However, if you actually used the possibilities of having different wind patterns using different speeds for different fans, the design shown here is actually pretty clever. Plus it seems to use off-the-shelf parts so it will be much cheaper than fully custom setup using lots of fans.

    Leo may not have been flying while slack lining, but the ability to "push" on the air gives a tremendous advantage. It basically makes the air from the robot's perspective similar to water would be for us.

    the question that was bugging me the entire video was how does having propellers working all the time to maintain balance affect the battery consumption... I mean, it must be less power than actually flying, but at the same time, seems like more power draw than simply shifting weight to maintain balance... So the question is - is this the best of both worlds (drones and legged robots), or a lame combination that essentially won't be optimal for any particular job

      One way I see the rotors used is as gyroscopes for stability. Walking robots have multiple gyros constantly spinning for stability and control. Adding propellors to the gyros adds additional functionality. There is also the flexibility, versatility, and redundancy of multiple modes of locomotion; lighter bipedal robots with rotors for flight and perching, quadrupedal plus rotors for heavier loads and jumping.

      @@montithered4741 gyros should have very low power draw, they aren't doing work. Propellers as you noticed were being spazzed on and off constantly to account for poor balance, so now your gyro would be having a siezure spiking up and down which probably is going to do more harm than having nothing because now you have insanely sporadic amounts of rotating inertial changes and slower to respond thrust because now it's acting like lead props.

      Well,..once they want to carry something that is too heavy to just fly away with, then the legs will be useful. To use legs only for balancing like the Atlas or Spot robots from Boston Dynamics is very difficult. So it is a cheap and easy way to balance, without as much sensors, computing power etc. If you stand on 1 leg holding a heavy thing, you may fall, but just 1 finger touching a wall and it becomes easier, but your finger isn't bearing all the weight. So this robot could for example fly to an island, move some bricks around which are too heavy to lift by flying, and come back (why.. idk).

    As someone who dabbles in slack lining, it’s interesting how Leonardo bounces on the line, which I’ve found is a helpful technique for humans as well. Bouncing negates some of the side-to-side movement of the line, and allows you to stay more upright and stable. Once you get better, you learn to ride with the line, but as a beginner, bouncing definitely helps you to learn.

      Seems like by "bouncing", you're creating creating vertical force along your long axis (where the moment is smaller), and avoiding the horizontal force at your legs, which is much further from your center of mass (where the moment is much larger and can tilt your body easily).

      One way, to make all the blade of a 5+ blade rotor slightly different shapes (sound different for each) & still rotationally balanced // with very similar drag for each blade (a really hard design challenge that CAE tools can help with, though making it the really hard part, especially balancing it perfectly in a way that can hold tight while spinning at very high RPM //

      The sound of the props can be manipulated by the pitch of the blades.
      More aggressive pitch gives more thrust and create more turbulence.

      You are who we use the smoke trails for. 😛 Very little science is actually done with those visualizations, with the exception of PIV. It's really just a quick rough look at the overall airflow if needed before diving into the detail work with quantifiable measurements.

    I'm a retired electronic tech. I have built a few simple robots myself.
    This newer flying robot is fantastic and a great achievement. Very useful in many cases. Rescue/ search could be just one.
    BUT even to me it looks creepy as "H"!!!

    Propellers kill the batteries rapidly; they need to be integrated as a last resort for balance and engaged when it comes close to its tipping point; instead, perhaps tweak the ZMP and/or DSC algorithms. Of course this is easy for me to say behind a keyboard. Great concept though and yes add some wheels that can be activated when needing to. Imagine this thing rolling down a hill at 40mph, taking to the sky on a tangent, and landing on a rooftop.

      I had the exact same thought. Hearing that it needs the propellers for balance sounds "bad". The rope balancing doesnt seem to be a great feat either. Its just using its propellers to float.

      @@KopiG86 It's not floating. The slack line would not be under tension if there was no weight on it. The propellers only seem to be generating enough thrust to stabilize it, not to reduce its weight.

    Its neat, but when I watch Boston Dynamics robots deal with an unexpected event (being knocked over, down or bumped) it is able to reset and right itself back up. With these, their unprotected propellers would be damaged in the event of being knocked over or accidently bumping in to something (branch, small strings or twine etc) And at that point would need a human to intervene to assist it.

      It’s rapid prototyping, you wouldn’t build that onto a prototype because it’s not 100% necessary to the conceptual design and it may change the aerodynamics when they are testing to see if the thing even works in the first place. It’s also why the back is exposed as well.

How does it get back up when knocked over (assuming the added weight of the blade shrouds didn't get fouled up) Ultimately this will have a limited niche use application as it does two things poorly. Walking and flying, both of which a dedicated walknig drone and flying drone could achieve more easily. Blending the two is interesting, but long term limited.

    7:07 Very impressive robot, but this point is debatable. There is clearly weight on the rope, but how much?
    I'd argue that it's comparable to lifting yourself up in your office chair and wheeling around with your feet Flintstones style - the propellers (arms) are likely doing most of the work.
    It's hard to discern as an outside observer exactly how often the legs are actually supporting the weight. My assumption is that most of the time, the robot is nearly neutrally buoyant, like diving down and walking along the bottom of a pool.

      @@sheldonaubut It's possible that is some sort of safety cutoff. Since the robot has no tethers, you'd need a remote way to cut power or otherwise disable it if it was doing something dangerous (to itself, or anything else.)

    Pretty cool and ingenious.
    I challenge scientists and engineers to come up with a robot that can mountain bike. So much balance required and so many imprecise decisions need to be made every split second. And there needs to be AI or knowledge programmed in about what's a rock what are roots as well as drop offs and the capability of the bike to roll over obstacles.
