    Great shot! Turning it into a screen shot. A photographer could make a killing selling these in a package, as wallpapers online! I'd pay for a tall fountain, burning moss, wall collapse, lava height, etc.

      @@joshimawashi It is actually not that noisy. Low rumble in the background with weird crackling noise at the edge of the lava flow. At least I expected more noise. A blowing steam hole makes more noise I think.

      @@ThorfinnurPetur I see... I haven't been to this volcano (Iceland) ...but I have seen the Mt Yasur volcano in Vanuatu.
      That one you can walk along the top of the crater and look straight down into it!

    Here's a way to estimate the height: follow a drop of lava from its maximum point counting the number of seconds it takes for it to fall down. The height in meters is approximately 5 times the time (in seconds) squared. So if it takes 5 seconds for the drop to fall, the height is 5*5*5 = 125 meters. If it takes 10 seconds, the height is 5*10*10 = 500 meters.

    It's absolutely amazing - would you be able to put the scale of a human beside it or something? It's hard to tell what size it is. Absolutely stunning photography!! Brilliant!

      If you have Google earth, you can flatten 500 meters on a location you know. That way you can see just how big it is.

    Now it's 3:12am in India and I am still watching Iceland volcanic eruption... Yo my parents r watching as well the live telecast... I wish well being of all the people residing in Iceland and that this natural calamity may get over soon. Thank you to the people of Iceland who has taken the initiative to show the volcanic eruption... BTW any Indians here now? Or is it only me😅😅

      Most likely caused by a deep lava tunnel that heats the gasses A lot. So it becomes like a barrel building pressure as the lava is pressed upwards.

    it's difficult to get scale of the cone. Is it around 150 metres high at the sides? Bloody stunning sight though! I wish I could see it in person

      It sure looks like the falling rocks aren't being blown around much. Since gravity is well understood, we can just time how quickly stuff falls. Provided that the video includes the entire plume.
      For a more precise number step through the video frame by frame.

    There's dissolved gas in that lava. That's what causes the high eruptions. The gas is trying to escape and the lava explodes upward.

    To all the wonderful people talking about the lack of audio: Wow! If you're offering to pay for an audio set up - one which filters out constant wind and can capture sound from a safe distance 24 hours a day - you need to talk to the people of Iceland. They need your expertise and unlimited financial resources!

      3.1 metric tonne per cubic meter. Avg flow rate 13 ms
      About 100 m/s speed.
      3100x13x 100² is 403 Mw in kinetic energy. I know my calculation is a bit off but its ballpark.

      Dusk and dawn are my favorite times to watch. There's the great contrast between the red/yellow lava and the dark vents and lava beds, in front of the still-distant landscape providing some context..

      You can check the live streaming channels from you tube, usually you can slide back for 12 hours. Be hurry, Iceland is 4 hours ahead of Eastern time.
