  • We've become accustomed to seeing members of the public use their cell phones to film police officers on duty. Now, we're starting to see cops pull out theirs, but it isn't to record. They're playing copyrighted music in an apparent attempt to exploit copyright filters. Dexter Thomas explains.

    Everyone should do this when they don’t want to be an unwilling person in a viral video. Copywriten music would not have stopped justice in the Eric garner case. Any death of suspect would warrant the little effort to strip music from the video. Silent video would have led to conviction.

      Right and it’s not like the original with sound doesn’t exist anymore when you record and can’t be watched or voiced over by news organisations. I’m not a big fan of the police and it’s good that cameras now have revealed some of the misuse that is happening but a lot of these “auditors” are just harassing people and are proving trouble to create viral content. No need to support that.

    You can record stuff with the photo/camera app. No YT, FB, Instagram algorithm on your personal phone. One person livestreams and another records offline directly on their phone. Or depending on how powerful your phone is you can probably do both at the same time!

      In some cases police will take the phone and delete footage, better to record live because it'll be stored on remote servers, but yes

      You can't do both on any phone, cameras can only be accessed by one sink at a time
      Hmmm actually you might be able to record your Screen while streaming to Facebook, but then if the stream goes offline you still have to manually switch to the camera app

      Yes, that's the right solution, because audio engineers surely love working for free on hundreds of videos of police encounters per day.
      Or do you think the people filming those videos should pay for their work? Because last time I looked, most police encounters going wrong happen in poor communities.

      You can usually clean the audio up in these cases. They're not as clever as they think they are.
      Edit: Livestreaming I guess is another problem but idk seems a little illegal for a government employee to use music unauthorized knowing it's livestreamed. That's stealing unless they're gonna start paying royalties on those uses.

      the problem is people aren't "recording". they go on Instagram live, Facebook live, or youtube live thinking their video is being automatically broadcasted and/or recorded and saved automatically. only come to find out that your video wasn't broadcasted, or WAS broadcasted but then deleted, because of copyright algorithms. so dumb. so yeah, record, record, RECORD. don't only go live.

    If the video isn't monetized, and its used for speech as part of a new and unique piece of media, an artist probably has no base for copyright damages. Copyright case shouldn't hold up in court so youtube shouldn't really pull these down. The problem is the algo isn't smart enough.

    I feel like the simple solution to this problem is to just record interactions on your phone instead of doing it live. if you post the video, and it gets taken down, it won't be deleted from your phone's files. sure, you lose the benefits of the interaction being streamed live, but it insures you always have that video for when you need it.
    I guess another way of saying it is that you should only record an interaction live if you feel there is an imminent threat coming from police. if it's just them being hard to work with, and you don't see a threat, record it to your phone where you can then post the video later.

Which will create a distortion since they are both moving with their phones in their hands that distortion will not be constant it will vary continuously. Making it near impossible to match it up with the audio sample which will most likely have no distortions. So the program will miss a bunch of the parts where it is distorted which will require a lot of audio cleaning or isolating

Also, alot of severe instances have only been captured because of filming (Rodney King would have been swept under the carpet for instance).       I love police. They’ve helped me plenty in my life. I have zero quarrel. The only people who have beef with police are criminals.
