  • Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is a former federal prosecutor whose family brought him to the U.S. from Cuba as an infant, and is the first immigrant and Latino to lead the agency. Since taking office, Mayorkas has made combating domestic violent extremism one of the agency’s top priorities. VICE News sat down with him to discuss why-and whether social media platforms are helping or not.

@@Pikkabuu Well, I don't buy into the baseline hypothesis that one political side is inherently less smart than the other. We would have to look at the distribution of political beliefs and IQ. Although IQ does not necessarily exclude strange (/fantasy) thinking and IQ also does not seem to hinder humans from believing the irrational at all.
On the lacking critical thinking skills, I would agree, but again, the left points the finger at right, right points the finger at the left.
We also have to analyze how many people that voted for trump actually believe in the "MAGA fairytale" vs how many are just disaffected and disenfranchised by the state and corotate fallout of jobs being outsourced and so on.
At it's core it's just a form of populism + nationalism which isn't really anything unique.
Look at what is going on in the left today and MAGA looks totally sane by comparison.
Humans are inclined to fictional thinking, we can see this in the religious realm as well.
We can compartmentalize just fine, logical fallacies and contradictions don't really matter at all.
I once heard that critical thinking is something that is very hard to actually teach(I don't know what the official literature is on that though). But I am sure it is a skill that can be practiced.
Critical thinking and civics education probably amongst the most important things when having to navigate the modern world.
Just remember that 50% of the world's population has a below average IQ! and now take the top 10-20% and imagine how smart they are. Yes, those people get to vote too.

One day they are extreme, the next day you are extreme. The X games are always extreme. I'm Gen. X but I'm not sure that stands for extreme.✌️

It was NOT an insurrection. No one is being charged with insurrection.

Yes it was. The point was to end democracy and install a loser who had absolutely no right being in the white house. Just because they failed doesn't mean it wasn't an insurrection

Do you even know what insurrection means? The FBI even said it was not the appropriate term to describe what happened.
The fact that you want people to be charged in this manner just shows how ignorant you are.

only because its hard to get a sedition conspiracy convictions of alleged far-right activists. Low hanging fruit, with most pleading out. The upside is felons can not vote or own guns. The conviction follows you the rest of your life and makes finding employment difficult. In fact many have lost their jobs for being there.

His responses were anything but refreshing. He won't just outright declare the link between speech and violence. Even worse, he says that one of his agents would still remain impartial even if they espouse hateful speech.

I don’t believe that somehow things were better four years ago. Just because things don’t happen in the capitol, it’s peaceful? Try fixing social problems by engaging social interaction.

@@andrewmeyer8783 thats because the methods of measurement have been getting better. That doesn’t mean that 4 years ago things were great. Ppl don’t necessarily care for Donald Trump. But when a lot of conservatives saw Barack Obama on tv, they felt enraged

@@NotShowingOff I agree that things weren't good 4 years ago, but I'm not convinced the apparent increase in domestic extremism can be entirely attributed to better methods for detecting it.
