The Subtle (and Not So Subtle) Military Propaganda in Movies

  • The Department of Defense has shaped its own image in pop culture for decades. Any production that wants to borrow military technology or man-power on-screen has to go through the DoD Entertainment office. In exchange for DoD’s resources, DoD gets script approval. VNT meets the Chief of DoD Entertainment Media and tells us the sort of revisions they do and a Communications Professor tells us how these changes alter audience perception.

It was my grandpa when I was around 6 years old that told me about related movies and books needing approval from the military and government before presented to the public. I didn't believe it was true, and even told this in school, and the teacher with student laugh at me and call me liar. Then when I entered college, I found out via documentary how much propaganda was serve and fed to people in every single movie or book. I view it as indecent, shameful, and since then I have stop watching anything related to it, including the portrait of the so called "heroes" from wars. You are not alone. Growing up as a kid, we are all trusting of our society. It was almost unbelievable that the biggest enemy of American people today is and has always been the Military Industrial Complex, the nasty Intelligence Agencies and the corrupt debt based financial system operated by the Federal Reserve. This is much worse than "the Mafia" because it is highly organised crime baked into every choke point of our society. It selects what choices you can make, and it cannot be removed from power. It is cancer that corrupts everything that it comes into contact and kills the host that attempts to remove it.

In this country we have been giving them immunity, and excused a lot of violent behavior. now we have a culture of authoritarian police state. Skimming a streaming service really quick, Falcon Rising, Warrior, Running Scared (spoiler), Homefront, Transporter (franchise), The Marksman, Bushwick, Resident Evil (most of them), Walking Dead, Alien Vs Predator 2. The Purge Anarchy even has a line about how only cops and criminals know how to use firearms even though once a year your neighbors try to kill you and the guy(cop) has been preparing to kill someone for over a year. There's only one movie where a character is a championship shooter (The Mist). Occasionally someone is a martial artist. With guns, it's always a veteran, a cop, they've never touched a gun, or they have one but don't know how to use it. You never someone who goes to the range more than once a year outside of the one example. It makes a little more sense if the character was involved during or before Vietnam (given conscription, major national events, and how quickly one could begin) or if the enlistment of large parts of the population are a result of the inciting incident (post major event).

Simplest definition of propaganda: Trying to get someone to believe something. (Which I recall hearing from Anthony Bourdain on an episode of No Reservations years ago.)
From Wikipedia: "Propaganda is communication that is primarily used to influence an audience and further an agenda, which may not be objective and may be selectively presenting facts to encourage a particular synthesis or perception, or using loaded language to produce an emotional rather than a rational response to the information that is being presented."

Don’t you think that could send a message that they don’t see the problem with what has been done? Ultimately the military has no ability to keep filmmakers from portraying the negative aspects of the military (very important films) but expecting the military to fund/facilitate those movies is ridiculous lol. Find me an example where an organization/corporation/agency is morally or ethically or legally obliged to spend money in helping portray its own wrongdoings. The definition from Google is :
information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view.
The example he gave of marketing is itself propaganda. So is campaigning and all political opinion pieces. Propaganda can be good or bad depending on what it's advocating for and how truthful it is.

I’m in the military so maybe I’m fitting right in with the expected reaction but here’s my $.02 regardless. I think it’s pretty wacky to call this propaganda. The LTC’s words at the end really say it all, it’s no different than any other corporation and what they would do in putting their “best foot forward.”
Would you rather the military endorse and facilitate negative values, war crimes, and unsavory actions? Don’t you think that would bring the wrong kind of people to recruiting offices? There’s nothing wrong with not wanting your mistakes and wrongdoings put in films. It’ll still be done, so it’s not like the military has any ability to shut down films that explore the negative actions they take (which are also important).

@@matthewsmith5737 thanks for being all together dismissive of my entire point to provide a definition that I can easily (and did) read at the time of posting. Where the military doing this ^ would be inappropriate is in their public addresses and information required by American citizens or world authorities, which they don’t do.
I guess to not dismiss your point, maybe the military is doing some sort of propaganda in their support of media, but why is this inappropriate. NO organization in the world has any ethical, moral, or legal responsibility to fund/help resource films that paint them in a negative light. So if the military is truthful and held accountable via other means (a concept not present in North Korean gov/mil and Nazi Germany’s gov/mil) then 1. Why would it be any surprise that the mil makes use of propaganda in this context and 2. Who cares and 3. What’s the alternative? Make the military provide funds to any and every form of media that comes knocking? That’s my big point here, it’s ridiculous to expect any organization to facilitate it being shown in a negative light, it’s only WRONG when that organization has the ability to stop anyone from painting them in a negative light (within legal limits), which the US military doesn’t do anyway…
