Hawaii's Feral Cat War

  • Yet another (cat)strophe is coming to head in Hawaii. There are too many feral cats roaming what’s considered the ‘extinction capital of the U.S’. But animal advocates can’t agree on how to control the outdoor cat population. Many conservationists insist on an unpopular but necessary solution: removing cats from the landscape. But that gets controversial when it involves America’s second favorite pet.
Note: Kauai Humane Society does not practice TNR.

It is not that simply cats are among those animals that have a very special and long lasting relation with us humans, we see cats as almost equal to humans and that goes already back to Ancient Egyptian. Scientists found cat mummies and cats together with humans in their graves which shows that cats already had a special status in human society and a very special relation with us humans back than. And if humans ever would be a problem that threatens birds we would not just shot and murder them so it is understandable that some humans have big problems when we do that to cats

It's the puzzling phenomena I've seen on TV from USA, where people give certain animals human traits, and insist that the animals are just like themselves. This have resulted in bizarre forms of "morality", where for example in my own home nation of Norway we were mercilessly vilified in the 70's and 80's because of the traditional seal and whale hunt, traditions that go back literally thousands of years. The reason for the whole whale depopulation was mostly Americans in the first place, and a few other super wealthy people that craved the oil from the blubber of the sea mammals to fuel their lamps, until Seneca oil, or Snake oil, became a viable alternative, possible to process into kerosene.
And to show the world how much the whales was loved, things like Sea World was lovingly embraced, where everone is clapping their hands and showing their fluoridated teeth, as a sign of approval when the wild mammals are forced to do various tricks to gain some tasty food, putting such a ferocious wild thing as a Killer Whale inside an aquarium prison is beyond me. Here we were condemned for having developed harpoon-cannons that ended the misery in an industrial speed, and still on the Western Isles, like the Grinda Drap at the Faroese Islands, they have developed killing giant sea mammals into a science, and they don't do it for fun, they do it for food.
Now seal and walrus is getting overpopulated, and the emotional crew filming Blue Planet 2 or similar for BBC explained that the walrus actually toss themselves off cliffs because there's no more room on the islands they use to breed. Calling it suicide, or a clear sign of global warming, that means that the walrus don't have ice enough anymore. The truth is that the growth ratio have just been growing like locust since exactly when we, the traditional shepherds of the Arctic seas, for some reason are not thought to deserve the same respect as Eskimos/Inuits and a wide variety of other ancient cultures. In Europe they even refuse to eat the meat from the reindeer that the natives of Northern Scandinavia have been living off for 50.000 years or so, because they think of reindeer as related to Rudolf, and so cannot be eaten.
      It's not a sane world.

A lot of them were truly feral but I think some were dumped by their former owners. Unlike dogs which depend on humans for food, cats adapt quite readily and become feral in a very short time.

Not all cats kill birds as I have some that are well fed and don't kill birds just mice and rats for a few of my cats. "Mongoose are opportunistic feeders that will eat birds, small mammals, reptiles, insects, fruits, and plants. They prey on the eggs and hatchlings of native ground nesting birds and endangered sea turtles. The small Indian mongoose has been blamed with the extinction of ground-nesting birds in Jamaica and Fiji and commonly kill birds, including 8 federally listed endangered Hawaiian birds, such as the Hawaiian crow (‘alalā), petrels (ʻuʻau) and Hawaiian goose (nēnē). TNR doesn't work in diminishing feral cat populations. Anyone who has tried to reason with TNR advocates know that they are in denial and don't debate the issue in good faith. As pointed out in this video, feral cats live short, miserable lives. It's not humane to allow an invasive species like feral cats to prey upon native species that haven't developed protections against them, and it's not humane to feral cats either. Obviously, euthanizing them is less costly than TNR, especially when the total cost to wildlife and human health is taken into account. Most of them have never lived in a domestic setting, and should be regarded as a wild animal. Just because they accept food from people doesn’t make you a pet owner for feeding them, and they will bite you and give you a staph infection before you even get close enough to pet them. It's irresponsibility that leads to these actions needing to be done. Humans have to clean up their messes. I keep a cat, dog, and 7 of the world's largest snakes known to man. I hold no biases against trying to maintain an ecosystem when our actions of introducing animals that shouldn't be there end up destroying them. The thing that pisses me off about cats is that too many people get upset when talks of killing the ferals come up. Spaying and neutering should be a must if you ever plan to have one as a pet regardless. Other introduced animals such as the Florida Burmese python are given no such chances. They're ruthlessly killed because of a bias most common pet keepers have, and yet these same people are the first ones to justify how feral cats are playing the "survival of the fittest" game when they eradicate native species. Look at the battle Australia is dealing with because of feral cats. Logic is just thrown out the window when it comes to this specific animal and I'm sick of it. I know the animals aren't the ones at fault for our actions, but they need to be taken care of logically, not emotionally.

They are vicious predators, and very good at it. They can go out from a nice warm house into the wild like nothing, and kill and kill like it's all they ever knew their whole lives. Come back to the warm house, and curl up and purr in a warm spot like such an innocent little sweetie, lol. And they are sweet, but boy they have a dark side that is just innate. I hate seeing them be put down like this, but the alternative is to have natural species scrubbed down to nothing by them. You either have to accept the loss of the cats or accept the loss of every other small animal around them once the problem is this severe. I love the idea of mass spaying and neutering for the ferals but that may not be realistic in the short term. You have to protect the natural biosphere as a priority at the expense of the invasive species, and you have to do it quickly before permanent damage is done.

To be fair, I think there's good journalists in most news organizations. More or less depending on the organization, which is a question that is a can of worms all on its own, but if a story is good, then it's good no matter who wrote it. Some degree of bias is expected, but if the writer tries to include as much context and as many different perspectives as possible without trying to rush out a story asap (kind of hard to do now with how competitive and fast news can be with modern technology), then I think the reader/viewer will be informed enough to provide their own opinion on the matter.

Hunt them, just do it lol. They’re feral and is destroying the ecosystem. I understand that there are alternative solutions (spaying, trapping.) but doesnt that seem extremely ineffective? One single kitten litter can createup to 400,000 cats within just 7 years. Just hunt them and then the government should give citizens/organizations paid incentive to do so.

I doubt people are gonna go hunt cats for free thpugh (albeit, some hunters will do it for the sport.) But for real results we need to give the people a reason other than just the awareness of the problem. One idea, instead of paid incentives for just cat kills, maybe it should correlate to their population being controlled. Graph the estimated population of cats on the the island then go from there. Instead of an instant payment, maybe when goals are reached for the island, people will then get paid, (After one hundred thousand cats diminished, the first wave of payment will rollout, or something similar to this concept.)

I LOVE CATS. I totally understand and agree that feral free roaming cats have no place on any island. Birds have a valuable place in the ecosystem that makes them too critical to sacrifice for my love of cats. As humans, we cannot allow ourselves to be so selfish. We are just to powerful to succumb to our personal biases like that. I need simply picture Hawaii overrun with miserable suffering ferals with not a bird to be found. One way or another, this otherwise beloved critter will not be supported there forever. Better to need take less of them out humanely now and spare their prey than leave them there to breed until all birds, etc, are gone, and ultimately cause these cats to starve in this unique and precious environment they only exist in now due to human folly in the first place.

Leash training a cat is actually really easy, just start from when they are kittens and they will be like dogs, waiting at the door for their harness and daily walk. My 6 month old cat is perfectly happy being indoors, as long as I give her my time and attention when she wants to play and take her on walks.

    • @lindseyp9131

exactly! If you let your cat outside and then try to walk them they will be harder to leash train but if you start them on leash they love it! whenever they want to go outside you just slap the harness and leash on and then open the door. They usually want to go outside so bad, they don't care that a leash is on them. They start associating leash with the reward of going outside. Catios are also great!

Leash training a cat is nothing like leash training a dog. NOTHING, even when considering the most mellow kittens. I have attempted leash training both puppies and kittens and there are a lot of cats that simply do not take to the leash, even with positive reinforcement and training, due to their innate temperament. Cats' mode of being outside is different from dogs, they want to dart under and up things. As opposed to a pack animal, like a dog, who instinctively wants to walk with the pack.

I'm sorry but if you are a true cat lover you need to watch scientifically proven programs about how happy your cat is inside your home. We do not have leash laws for cats because they are not domesticated animals. Just because we keep them as pets does not mean they are domesticated. It means that they manipulate you because you feed them. If your dog jumped on my car and put prints and even scratches on it I would hold you responsible and you would pay for the damages of my property. You would be fined for letting your dog be unattended. Is your dog is a barking nuisance even in your backyard you can be fined if when the dog catcher shows up and he hears it barking. If your cat walks on my car and does the same thing or is howling and cat fighting and crapping in my flower beds I would have no lawful rights. Guess what would happen to your dog even attacked animals in your neighborhood? Guess what would happen to you if your cat was maiming and fighting and impregnating and killing animals in your neighborhood? America has a real problem with being bleeding heart animal lovers and the bottom line is these people who claim this don't even bother no learning exactly what your animal is. What breed of dog you have and its history for why it was bred for one specific reason. Example. You can know more love and raise a beagle right so that it will not bawl and run and sniff then you can love the instincts out of once Pitbull which is an atrocity to dogs that they even have to live. Don't recognize alpha like other dogs that are best friends for one specific reason. There's no excuse for Americans when we have the world at our fingertips. A world of knowledge. We are the most mocked and laughed about country because of our outrageous animal laws and our heinous behavior about what vicious breeds will allow on American soil. I'd say enough is enough. We euthanized animals for a reason in this country until these Pitbull lobbyists special interest groups destroyed the safety of our communities. That is not to be confused with a recognized humane society or animal rights activist group. America's freedoms don't work like that. We do not recognize a specific breed of any animal as a means to dictate the rights of all other animals in its breed or species. And enough is enough with our ignorance and ridiculous couch potato bleeding heart ideas about why it should be a felony to kick the s*** out of someone's cat or dog for digging up our flower bed and destroying our hard-earned landscape and property that we work our asses off because you're poor freaking animal has the same soul as I do and can't make decisions about my property or the lives of human beings or other animals above me. Why don't you cats and a dog and You bet your Life that I am a responsible pet owner because I care about those animals but I will never never take their side over your rights of your property because that's exactly what they are is property.
