  • It’s not easy being a major oil or gas company these days, what with so many people catching on to the pesky fact that burning fossil fuels is the main driver of climate change. The industry needs to do some serious image rebranding, and that’s where greenwashing comes in! Mike Kalenderian takes a look at the ways fossil fuel companies are ramping up their use of strategic marketing tactics to make themselves look eco-friendly, with insight from leading expert on the topic, Geoffrey Supran.

      @@JustOneAsbesto There's been a whole bunch of talk about these things for quite some time, but if you compare how fast energy is being phased out as opposed to how fast we're creating new, sustainable systems- it's like 100 to 1. I work in the industry.
      We've shuttered numerous coal fired power plants these past two years. The only reason we can even shut them down is because of how poorly the economy is doing- there's just no demand for power from industry.
      I can only assume our politicians already know there's going to be no return of industry, and so, no need for these power plants. Our economy is dying, and by the time people realize it, it will be too late to fix.
      Cheap energy is the bread and butter of life. It's the very source of prosperity, and it's likeness has been incredibly distorted. Few nations are tackling this issue- Germany is leading the pack.
      We're losing power faster than we are creating it, and a dying economy has offset the consequences of it.

    It's all so easy to blame corporations and fossil fuel companies.. but seriously how many people actually do their part in their daily life to reduce consumption? Everyday i see excessive wastage in energy, water, packaging, etc, etc.. but people in rich countries like to believe they're entitled to wastage because we can 'afford' it... it is so 'cheap' right? We can afford to just leave the lights and air-conditioning on, to leave the water running because it is so 'cheap', and turning them off seems inconvenient. We buy products with excessive packaging because it looks nice, or because somebody claim it's supposed to be 'more' hygiene? Then we just dumped all these waste into the trash and someone else will 'take care' of them and the problem will 'disappear' right?
    Unfortunately, it is exactly such foolish thinking that's now coming around to haunt us.
    While it's true coporations have a big role to play (thus easy blame targets), real power is in the hands of everyone whether or not we're willing to change our own consumption habits.
    Change starts within ourselves, even if it means certain inconveniences. Start now, big or small, don't wait for others.

    Well, it is the old battle of which holds more power, the provider of goods/services or the consumer. As with all of thesis and antithesis, we need a synthesis. Of course our consumption of energy & gas plays a role, as does what the companies do. Not one side is to blame. Both parties need to step up and it is the task and duty of politicians to broker how this is gonna be achieved. Policies need to aim at companies to force them to change their policies, and also we need policies that encourage a sensible consumption behavior. We need both sides to try to achieve that goal.

    Working in the upstream production for oil companies for multiple generations burdens me with a baked in bias to support more oil/gas production
    However i do agree that oil majors are promoting their carbon reduction agendas to the pubic in a way that suppresses the urgency for society to decide NOT to use their products because the companies and some countries (OPEC)require the revenue from sales to stay solvent, if society suddenly stops using these products these entities would collapse. Remember it was societies demand for these products that created the world we live in (decline in whale oil production and the low cost motor carriages)
    History has examples of how interconnected oil and gas is with society, research the WW2 military strategies, oil consumption/standard of living, leaded fuels and the 70's oil embargo.
    I think this video is great but it needs an objective view on HOW we are going to transition to renewable/zero harmful emissions World that consumes 95 million barrels a day of just crude oil (50-60million is used for engine fuel) Not counting natural gas (methane) and LPG (y grade propane)
    The question NOBODY wants to ask is are we (society) willing to reduce our prosperity and standard of living during this transition? The more conveniences we give up and the more we are willing to pay for energy the sooner we can stop using "fossil fuels"
    increased taxs or increased energy bills for every single family are required to build the power plants (nuclear and renewable) and quadruple the current infrastructure to justify the costs. With most western households living paycheck to paycheck an increase in expenses (less gasoline costs) per month by $150-250 would be enough for the capital costs but wouldn't cover operations
    ......oh yeah and current technologies cant solve our other demands like jet fuel/plastics/petrochemicals. Those alone still require 40-50 MBOPD of crude oil production, however these products can and need more regulation to reduce their carbon emissions.
    So tell me how are we going to solve those issues? Slowing production will only make the cost of those products higher 🤷🏼‍♂️
    Human beings individually need a common "enemy" to persuade or manipulate opinions (nazis or cold war politics) so driving a anti oil company narrative is the easiest way to pursued the general public that gasoline is bad and teslas are cool, their an easy target 🎯 and if done correctly it works (research the soviet union)
    End rant

    I am a professional engineer in the oil & gas industry in Canada. Rules regarding emissions have been in place for years and half my job is changing facilities (usually built in the 80s and 90s) to minimize their emissions. Every SCF of gas lost to the Atmosphere is lost money, and companies know this. Solar power was old news in the industry when I got in, 10 years ago, and every site (I’ve ever installed) has been powered by solar (running instruments and on site computers). I get rather insulted when people point their finger at me and say I’m the bad guy, when the well sites and facilities that I install are designed to be zero emissions. Loss of products that consumers could use, is viewed as completely unacceptable. Yet, demand is there, and I’m still the bad guy.

    Simple...recalculate a price for oil that removes government subsidies and accounts for the remaining oil, current CO2 level, and make sure this equation is weighted heavily against the CO2 level. People can then make a truly informed decision on how much energy they use and where they get it from.

    • @kurmarkify
      @kurmarkify 2 년 전

      The market has already priced that in

    • @cbracing808
      @cbracing808 2 년 전

      @@kurmarkifyI'm sure it is.... but is it really??? because we are still living unsustainably, killing ourselves and eachother. If the market was priced properly then we wouldn't be building NEW coal power plants. With CO2 levels high enough we can no longer naturally fix the climate, we require carbon capture. This costs alot of money and yields little to no benefit other than not killing us.
      Just like your car, just because it works with a part broken doesnt mean you should drive it like that. That broken part will cause other parts to break and before you know it you are stuck in a loop of fixing the squeaky wheel without ever addressing the underlying issues that caused it to start squeaking to begin with.
      Lol that metaphor was difficult to come up with and probably worse for you all reading it but I think it does encapsulate my point, if you can follow my train of thought

      But then they have a million times bigger political sway than the consumers. And the truth is, it doesn't matter how they produce it you need energy (don't get me wrong Im against wasting though)its not a choiche from your part, on the other hand they produce said energy and one can argue that they have a lot more power to decide how they produce it than what you have to decide wheter you want to buy energy, or want to move back to the caves.

    Consumerism is 100% the main driving factor for climate change and pollution in general. However we're not doing enough to make it more sustainable first, and then tackling consumerism itself. So I think these ads are good in principle but serve for a bad purpose.

    Under the system of capitalism which is ruled by the profit motive, anything goes in the name of preserving and increasing profit. The fossil fuel industry will only do something to combat climate change if they find a profitable way of doing so. In the meantime we are all facing down the consequences of their actions as they continue to gaslight the people and buy politicians. Considering how this is a pattern for every industry ever this should not be surprising. No individual industry is to blame for the problems of capitalism, it is the system of capitalism which causes this behavior and any attempt to fix this must address the systemic problems inherent to capitalism

    One of the lower quality docs done here on Vice. Consumption is the problem, fossil fuels only exacerbate the problem. Obviously the oil companies do not have our best interests in mind, but how do people expect to produce the amount of power used everyday in places like the US? Windmills? Ok, what fuel source shall we use to produce the parts for a windmill?

    • @alexh5725
      @alexh5725 2 년 전

      "ok, what fuel source..." Electricity. Which you can generate from windmills, hydroelectric power plants, etc. How do you melt the materials? induction heating. Among other ways of heating things up. I mean, hydroelectric power is capable of producing large amounts of electricity.

    • @a3skiba
      @a3skiba 2 년 전

      The western US is on fire and facing serious long-term water issues. Water-flows out west are at a point where it's difficult to justify new hydro-electric projects because they may be unusable in a matter of years.
      Late-night TV hosts and MSM:
      "we should be driving electric cars to save the world" Not considering the impacts of mining lithium, producing new cars, and plugging these cars into the power grid. Currently, the US power grid absolutely cannot support millions of plug-in vehicles, but somehow with solar and wind it suddenly will?
      Obama and his "cash for clunkers" took cars with 10+ years of usable life off the road and destroyed them (as opposed to recycling the parts to keep other used cars on the road). Its just paving the way for more vehicles to be produced (more pollutants) instead of running these perfectly good vehicles until they die.
      Countries say "We cut emissions in half by using solar"
      No, you put up a few solar panels and then outsourced power production to another country who's now burning more coal and more "biofuel".
      If you want to blame the oil companies, go buy a bicycle. If you're mad because mass transit sucks, blame the government. If you really want to make a difference, cut your consumption.
