This is so cute that what they are doing is single-handedly inspiring an entire generation. We never forget experiences that make us feel good as a child so imagine in 10 years when they are graduating high school they may want to do something similar like this to help the houseless families.

It's wonderful that her son has this rare educational opportunity, even though she herself lost her job as a teacher and quickly became homeless, thus showing how underappreciated and underfunded education is in America. This special school is a great effort, but still a band aid.

For those of you criticizing: her son is clean, fed, being educated, and fortunately has a roof over his head. Compared to others in the same situation, she is blessed and is doing a good job. Hopefully you won’t go through what she’s going through.

When she said she was a teacher in Oklahoma, my first reaction was it makes sense.she was one step away from poverty. Teachers get paid nothing in Oklahoma. When I taught in OK, I could only afford to eat 1 meal a day and I didn't have children. It was sad. Rough times. I left, moved to Texas and got a 20,000 increase to my salary. OK needs to pay their teachers more
I grew up in Oklahoma and most of my teachers had second jobs or summer jobs at least. The ones who didn't mostly had spouses who also worked
@@katherineh1401 yesssss. I worked part time at kohls to afford to eat 2 meals a day. My manager made a 6 figure salary at kohls and I saw flyers at Aldi that they were hiring managers and starting salary was 50k . 🙊🙊 I was shocked, as a teacher only making 30k. I also noticed that too. The teachers that struggled were single and the teachers who had the nicest decorated classroom with fancy supplies had husbands. They didn't complain about the salary. They were working for fun cuz their husband's paid everything. I left right after the strike. I couldn't take it anymore 😪
@@cristinagarcia2328 It's so horrible how they treat the teachers there. I was so lucky to have so many great teachers too, for them to get paid less than a retail employee and certainly not a livable wage. I'm sorry you had to go through that.
@Jenete j yes, as a teacher in Lawton,Oklahoma in 2018, I was making around 30,000. After the 2018 strike, the state gave teachers a 5k raise. So I guess teachers now make around 35k now. It's sad really
@@cristinagarcia2328 I don't live in OK but I remember the ugly backlash directed at teachers when they went on strike. It was terrible. I couldn't believe the disgusting rhetoric. 😓
When the little kid said "it is like jail" it broke my heart. No children should experience this. It is absurd that if you lose your job in the States you can be homeless...but I guess the old tale of the "American dream" still resonates over there.

The American Dream is not even a thing in the USA for many years. We have allowed narcissistic crooks to force the destruction of many good families and allowed the crooks to convince society that they alone are entitled! It's ridiculous and must end for our democracy to thrive. We have a severe shortage of affordable, climate sustainable housing and CEO's typically earning over 3,000 times what the average mid-level employee earns. We're working on it-keep the faith!

I wasn't homeless until my late teens/early twenties, at that age we'd get alot of blame for our situations, so it goes without saying that the shelters were like prisons but to hear a 6 year old say that has me in tears its truly heartbreaking.
@@jansonshine9082 The ceos make more money because they are able to statistically put in more effort than the average person. They have more dominant traits. The American dream is very real. You dig yourself out of any hole no matter how deep. It’s just that many people prefer to just call themselves a victim instead of trying to solve their problems. You can change anything in your life that you don’t like. If you have a problem you should looking for answers in the mirror.

I’m studying to become a teacher and I always had a dream of having my own school. Today an idea came into my head of having my own school for kids with very low income, foster care and so on. I didn’t know these schools existed until I saw this randomly pop into my KRplus the same day I thought about this idea. I think it’s a sign🥺

OH MY GOODNESS! I truly have been praying about this for a while now. It has been my dream to open my own school specifically for kids who are low income and poverty. I didn’t think it could happen (thought of the idea after witnessing hardcore bullying at my school) and asked God to help me with my vision and I just happened to find this video and to see your comment, praise God! I pray that He orders your steps and make your plans succeed. We need more schools/establishments like this so please keep pushing! I have my school name, mascot and mission statement. I want mine to be Christian private school too
My goal is for my private school to also have staff that are formerly homeless or have had hardships. Wow I am so blessed and happy right now to know that other people want the same thing!
Every school district should have this, especially during these hard economic times. It would alleviate the stress and anxiety of kids experiencing homelessness and create a safe learning environment until they feel comfortable going to a different school or until family circumstances change. This is awesome

I live in Oklahoma and have heard nothing of this. I am proud and amazed to see this in OK. I'm not the least bit surprised that the state does not fund a bit this. Don't tell Stitt or he will outlaw it.

What a stunning indictment of this country. The federal/state govts should be the ones taking the initiative to fund PUBLIC schools for homeless kids. We shouldn't have to rely on private donors.

I wouldn't want my child to return to the public fool system after going here. This school looks wonderful. They even take naps something they don't allow in kindergartens anymore
Most schools are run like prisons. All the kids sitting in a row, walking in a row, eating in a row. Very rarely are schools allow creativity and such nice 1-1 interactions in the classrooms. The playground seems really nice as well. This appears to be an excellent school.
I don’t know what you’re talking about I’ve never heard of a kindergarten classroom where kids take naps. I’m 31 years old my kindergarten room didn’t have naps my preschool did but kids typically stop taking naps around the preschool age by kindergarten they don’t need it.

7:08 No child is a “drain” on the system, the system is not set up to support them. Also, it’s way more important that you’re saving the child than saving money for the school system. Every child deserves a supportive environment in which to learn and grow.
She was speaking about why the government should financially support their school. The American government talks money, not morality.

I’ve done work with this school for the last 6-7 years and let me tell you this … Angels on earth walk it’s halls.
Just think, literally every school in the US could be like this if we took the trillions we spent on wars and used it on something worthwhile. What a different we could have made.
And stop sending aid to other countries to fight their wars aka Iron dome etc

This warmed my heart! As an educator, I can tell that Positive Tomorrows' educational philosophy is child-centered and grounded in deep compassion for these families. I can only hope such school models will be replicated around the world.
Things like this are what I’d do if I was a billionaire. It’d be fun uplifting people and changing lives.
I will also have financial education for the adult and perhaps a mandatory emergency account directly deposited from their paychecks, example 5% per month.
Shelters like this and community colleges really make a lot of difference. I hope people learn to appreciate them more. I grew up in a similar school (a public city school that serves a struggling area; had adequate funding which is rare) growing up as an immigrant. It tremendously helped the area
You should know that sometimes that is the mentality some ppl had and when the dollars dazzled their eyes everything changed from being caring and giving to mean and selfish beings. Not all but some at least that's what usually hapens when you get into higher power.

My family and I are homeless, living in a travel trailer in California… there is nothing like this for my children!

I used to hate it when we had no electricity or running water and my alcoholic addict father used to ask me to go get Chinese food. Walking in and asking for a Happy Family (C12) with a tear in my eye. Humiliating.

Wow this is amazing. I have heard about a school like this. However in a big city there was only one in the entire city. There needs to be more schools like these across the country to support these kids and families.
So many people are so judgmental about homeless situations that are different for everyone. Many people WORK long hours everyday and still struggle.! Not everyone’s foundation is the same remember that not everyone comes from good families with support

I love this. Especially since the school understands the situation. I wish we had this when I was in school. My school assumed everyone has cell phones and computers but they didn't realize there was some kids who didn't even have a place called home. I remember how hard it was pretending everything was OK.
Maybe worth filing small claims for illegal eviction. Landlord will have to cover court cost
I cried and cried watching this.. happy for them to have a space like this but also sad for those that don’t. All the thoughtfulness of clothing & backpacks really touched me. We need more schools like this in local areas. Poverty is everywhere and this could make so many children’s lives easier and accessible. It would be outstanding in our nation and to many children and teens going through homelessness.
It blows my mind that there are 25000 homeless children in Oklahoma alone and the US still thinks they are the world‘s greatest nation

I wish I could’ve gone to a place like this as a kid. My mom, sister and me had to live in a homeless shelter for 1 year when my mom left my abusive alcoholic father. We got picked on in school and my bus driver would drop me off in the middle of nowhere on purpose and say I had nowhere to go anyways. I was 7 years old.
I’m so sorry. That makes me so mad! Why on earth would the bus driver be so cruel to a child! Really feels like people in poverty are socially acceptable to discriminate against :(

I was homeless in Montreal, Canada for 7 years (until November 2020) and I have never seen children that young without a home. Normally they go to group homes (where I grew up). I wish I could help.

I’m glad that there’s a school out there that helps these kids! I was one of those kids growing up, I was always homeless, starving and moving from couch to couch and school to school. It makes me happy to see that these kids won’t have to go through what me and so many others went through .

This is an amazing place and school, the government should do this in every state, homelessness is not bound to any creed or color. This could happen to anyone, especially during this pandemic, this has been a scary time for everyone that doesn’t have a living wage.
It is good that this exists, but this arrangement is the exception here in the USA. I was born here in the USA and I am a patriotic citizen and a progressive who wants this country to imitate Denmark's success in dealing issues of homelessness, education, healthcare, and livable minimum wage. The problem it that plutocratic Republicans in the US Senate block measures to make the needed changes. We need to get Senators from the D.C. and Puerto Rico. We need constitutional amendments to have senators be as proportional representation rather 2 per state regardless of population. Wyoming should not have the same number of senators as California. We also need to abolish the electoral college and have all presidential elections determined by the popular vote. We also need to repeal the misnomer "Citizens' United" which allows for extreme legalized bribery by greedy corporations to politicians.

Middle class and upper middle class people everywhere in the world need to remember that they're closer to homelessness than they'll ever be to being multi millionaires and billionaires so stop listening to scaremongering conspiracy theories about the evils of social welfare. Rich people are paying less taxes than you. Demand that they pay more taxes. If you earn less than 1 million per year in the US you don't ever have to worry about increased taxes for the 10%, it's about holding the extremely rich accountable. The creamy layer if you may. I agree about DC and Puerto Rico statehood. I've been calling my senators every once in a while recently because at the beginning of the summer Stacey Abrams was asking people to call their senators every day to express support for the for the people act, and I've been mentioning DC and Puerto Rico statehood and ending the filibuster. I think it would make a difference if large numbers of people started calling their senators in support of that bill.

I've been talking to a few teachers about this and I think it's totally awesome what you're doing and wait a lead by example to show that there's so many more options than just being in a little Box Here you are helping kids with no real futures now you're giving a slight future being homeless kid with an education is more important than trying to fly to the moon or Mars Cheers

as a kid I was homeless a few times but up in Minneapolis and went to a homeless school but it was more like a day care for us then teaching us so I so glad some of the homeless schools have gotten better
