Texas Democrats Flee to DC to Save Voting Rights

  • Governor Greg Abbott called for a special session in the Texas state legislature this month, with items like election integrity, transgender youth in sports, and abortion on the agenda. Democrats are outnumbered in both chambers, and it seemed like a bill that would make it harder for people to vote would inevitably pass-- until they left the state. Over 50 Texas House Democrats are staying in D.C. for the next month as they urge federal lawmakers to address the issue.

Wait a couple of more months when inflation is through the roof and there will be mobs of hungry Americans in the streets. That's when the cork pops out of the bottle. Wall St Big Shot Ray Dalio did a study recently of the last 50 political revolutions in history, and he says it told him that America is on the verge of a Revolution NOW. What's playing out now is just a part of that. Do you understand how serious it is that TX Dem legislators fled the state just to avoid a critical vote ? When is the last time that you heard of something like that happening in America ? Stop laughing, you FOOLS, and pay attention to what's happening around you. The life you save may be your own.

    • @jameswest2567
      @jameswest2567 2 년 전 +16

That's not the issue. The issue is what kind of ID. Years ago, Texas tried to make a driver's license or concealed carry license the only ID you could use. That was struck down by the Supreme court, but since the VRA has been gutted, it could happen again.
A restrictive voter ID law makes it harder for people like students and or people from poverty stricken areas harde, if not impossible, to get the correct ID required. Needing to show ID for mail in ballots is nonsense, as well. In states like colorado, voter registration is based on state ID records, and the state knows exactly who the ballot belongs to.
The issue is a lot bigger than "you shouldn't need ID to vote."

Here is what the Texas bill would do (www.texastribune.org/2021/04/21/texas-voting-restrictions-senate-bill-7/#dc0883a0-a54b-4af1-b30d-3daf45c99b7f). Here is why Democrats are concerned:
      1. RESTRICTS EARLY VOTING. Currently, early voting is available 2 weeks prior to election day, for at least 12 hours each weekday, typically 7AM-7PM during the final week of voting. This bill would cap early voting to 12 hours at most. This would reduce early voting hours for counties that operated above the 12 hour minimum, like Harris and Bexar County, which voted 56% and 58% Democrat in the 2020 Presidential Elections, respectively (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_United_States_presidential_election_in_Texas#By_county).
      2. BANS DRIVE-THRU VOTING. Currently, voters are allowed to drive to a voting location, verify their eligibility to vote, and fill-out their ballots in their vehicles. This bill would effectively ban drive-thru voting. This would eliminate an option of voting that was used by 1 in 10 voters in Harris County, which voted 56% Democrat in the 2020 Presidential Elections.
      3. REDUCES POLLING LOCATIONS. Voters in Texas are allowed to vote in any county they wish, which is called countywide voting (a long-standing voting option in Texas). Due to this allowance and early voting hours typically being 7AM-7PM, many voters find it easier to vote in the county where they work as opposed to the county where they live. As such, election officials determine the number of polling locations based off of the number of people that vote in that particular county. This bill mandates that counties with a population over 1 million that use countywide voting must be subject to a formula that redistributes polling locations and polling resources based on the county's number of registered voters, not the number of people that actually vote in that county. (*NOTE: This is why some counties may have more voters voting in that county than they have registered voters in that county). This redistribution of polling locations would likely reduce the number of polling locations in some counties as the county's number of registered voters is less than the number of voters that actually vote in that county. The counties that would be affected by this change are: Harris, Dallas, Tarrant, Bexar, and Travis. These counties voted 56%, 65%, 49%, 58%, and 72% Democrat in the 2020 Presidential Elections, respectively.
      4. RESTRICTS MAIL-IN VOTING. Currently, Texas allows mail-in ballots to be sent only to: voters who are 65 and older, will be out of the county during the election, are confined in jail but otherwise still eligible or cite a disability or illness that keeps them from voting in person without needing help or without the risk of injuring their health. This bill would ban counties from sending mail-in ballots to eligible voters who do not request one. This would limit a voting option that was widely preferred by Democrats in the 2020 Presidential Elections (electproject.github.io/Early-Vote-2020G/index.html).
      5. PURGES ELIGIBLE VOTERS. This bill would allow the Texas Secretary of State to purge voters that he/she "determined to be ineligible to vote". This broad language means that, regardless of whether an individual is eligible to vote or not, the Secretary of State need only deem an individual ineligible and that person will be purged. In effect, the Secretary of State can purge anyone from the voter rolls, specifically members of the opposing party - Democrats currently.
The premise of this bill and others like it by Republicans is that the 2020 US Elections were severely flawed and wrought with voter fraud. That is a lie (www.politifact.com/article/2020/nov/20/fact-checking-false-claims-about-2020-election/)! The 2020 US Elections were the most secured in US history (www.businessinsider.com/dhs-breaks-from-trump-2020-election-most-secure-in-history-2020-11?op=1). There was no widespread voter fraud in the 2020 US Elections (www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/barr-says-justice-department-found-no-evidence-of-fraud-that-would-change-election-outcome). There has been no widespread voter fraud in any American election in the past 20 years (www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2014/08/06/a-comprehensive-investigation-of-voter-impersonation-finds-31-credible-incidents-out-of-one-billion-ballots-cast/).
So, why are Republicans proposing and passing restrictive voting measures? In the 2016 US Elections, Republicans falsely claimed there was widespread voter fraud (www.politifact.com/article/2016/dec/17/fact-checking-claims-voter-fraud-2016/). When they won the Presidency, the Senate, and the House, they passed NO restrictive voting measures - despite controlling the federal government for 2 years. In the 2020 US Elections, Republicans falsely claimed there was widespread voter fraud. When Democrats won the Presidency, the Senate, and the House, Republicans passed or introduced hundreds of restrictive voting measures across the country (www.brennancenter.org/our-work/research-reports/state-voting-bills-tracker-2021). Republicans have lost the popular vote in the last 7 of 8 presidential elections over nearly 30 years. The majority of the American people reject the Republican Party. Rather than changing their political positions or messaging to be more aligned with the people, Republicans resort to insurrection, lies, gerrymandering, and voter restrictions. The introduction of Texas Republicans' voting bill demonstrates that they seek, not to secure the integrity of America's elections, but to restrict access to the ballot for eligible voters, specifically Democratic voters (of whom, people of color vote overwhelmingly for). The only thing the Republican Party cares about is winning re-election to continue collecting their paychecks and benefits while doing little to nothing to earn them.
NOTE: THE NEW PROVISIONS OF THIS BILL HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH VOTER ID. VOTER ID IS NOT A PROBLEM FOR DEMOCRATS OR REPUBLICANS IN THIS PARTICULAR BILL.

@@ilovehihats Here is what the Texas bill would do (www.texastribune.org/2021/04/21/texas-voting-restrictions-senate-bill-7/#dc0883a0-a54b-4af1-b30d-3daf45c99b7f).

The wait times for obtaining an ID can often take hours, which most working people don't have during the day. Drive through methods as well as 24 hour voting... According to CNN, it is not just about an ID:
      -Ban after-hours voting.
-Prohibit ballot drop boxes and drive-through voting centers.
-Mandate all weekday early voting take place sometime between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m., though draft language would further limit Sunday early voting to a maximum between the hours of 1 p.m. and 9 p.m.
-Make it illegal for elections officials to send applications to vote by mail to people who did not request one.
-Bar counties from helping facilitate the distribution of unsolicited ballot requests.
-Require voters requesting absentee ballot to provide their driver's license number or Social Security number on both their request for a ballot and their return envelope containing their ballot.
-Impose $1,000-a-day fines on local election officials who do not follow prescribed procedures to update their voter rolls, and criminal penalties on election workers who obstruct poll-watchers.
It should not be overly difficult to cast a ballot. Furthermore, case after case, including Trump appointees have all certified there was no mass voter fraud. LOL in fact most of the fraud was perpetrated by republicans (www.mediaite.com/news/pa-republican-who-objected-to-trumps-election-loss-has-concluded-that-fraud-was-committed-by-republicans/).

@@spankyspork5808 Here is what the Texas bill would do (www.texastribune.org/2021/04/21/texas-voting-restrictions-senate-bill-7/#dc0883a0-a54b-4af1-b30d-3daf45c99b7f).
