How Brexit is Reigniting Tensions in Northern Ireland

  • It's been over two decades since the signing of the Good Friday Agreement ended the violent conflict in Northern Ireland known euphemistically as “the troubles.” But earlier this year the country saw some of the worst unrest in recent years, with rioting spreading to multiple towns and cities across the country.
One of the driving forces behind the violence is Northern Ireland's post Brexit relationship with the EU. On leaving Europe it was agreed that no land border for goods or people would be placed between Northern Ireland, part of the UK and the Republic of Ireland, an EU member- as cooperation between the two nations was a big part of what ended 30 years of conflict in 1998.
But the decision to avoid a border on the island of Ireland has resulted in a de facto sea border for goods being placed between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK. This is something many in Northern Ireland's Protestant Unionist community believe is a threat to their identity and their country's future as part of the UK.

I was raised loyalist/methodist but never fell for the bullshit, unfortunately the poor communities here are enveloped in tribalism/religion & remain "controlled" by paramilitaries.
I've approached several loyalists on reddit with the "but the English generally can't stand Loyalism", and typically get the following response which I enthusiastically disagree with:
      -------------------
      -------------------
"I agree with your point that the general English population either thinks negatively, or doesn't consider NI loyalism, but my own point is that Ulster loyalists do not care that the general English population has a negative view of loyalism.
The reasons for my loyalty to the Crown are not the same as the reasons for my support for Unionism. My identity as a loyalist largely derives from historical reasons such as the fact that the monarchy has been Protestant, and the Crown has provided military protection for Ulster protestants for hundreds of years. (I have no problem with you finding some of my reasons for loyalism to be sectarian.)
Whereas my reasons for Unionism would include the fact that Ulster protestants have close cultural ties to GB, the fact that the UK has a strong economy and also for many other perhaps trivial reasons which may not seem important to somebody who only cares about economic prosperity, but matter to me and many others nonetheless."
      -------------------
      -------------------
TL;DR They generally aren't the smartest bunch. EG: There are several examples on Google images of Nazi flags & C18 graffiti being displayed next to Israeli flags in Belfast.

I was looking for a comment like this. You're 100% right. It's just a fact we just don't care. The younger generations in the rest of the UK especially have no shared history with the events or traditions that NI desperately cling to. Supporting the hardest Brexit and yet unable to handle it now it has happened. And without the self awareness to admit they got it wrong. Did more in five years to create a United Ireland than Republican paramilitaries did in thirty years of violence.
Do you not think there is a simple objective reason why the British military had a higher opinion of the IRA as a paramilitary force than the various loyalist paramilitaries?
As regards the IRA, why do you think they are supposed to voice a positive opinion about the British Army? To be fair?

Go for independence from the UK or Rejoin Ireland.
Both will still result in them rejoining Ireland sooner or later.
If they rejoin Ireland now, the stronger their hand in negations and making things how they want in the long term.
If they go for Independence, they will economically have to rely on Ireland. But they will have more internal say and won't have to rely on London to tell them what to do. However over time that would still result in them being reabsorbed by Ireland due to demographic changes and no fresh Brits coming over to replenish numbers, again thanks to brexit.

We are Ulster-Scots not English and we are not "loyal to the crown". We are loyal to the United Kingdom including Scotland and formerly including the ROI (originally the UK was the UK of GB and IRELAND). We are loyal to the Queen as Head of State and the Defender of the Faith but not loyal to the royal family. That will be made plain when the Queen sadly passes and the unionists don't accept whoever takes over.
There is no worthy heir so the Queen will probably be the last one to ever hold the power currently held (which is still pretty much total and absolute should she wish, like ability to declare war and peace on other nations). The constitutional monarchy of the UK is an agreement the Queen gives her powers to Parliament but Parliament still submits to the Queen. It's called ceremonial because The Queen doesn't alter the government manifestos or interfere with Parliament and never uses her powers of royal prerogative - if she does she knows it will be the last time she ever does

    • @t.g.troughton8245
      @t.g.troughton8245 2 년 전 +7

Cause these Protestant/unionists/Loyalists are ethnically british ( ie english/scottish), not irish. American is not an ethnicity. It's a nationality. Irish however is both an ethnicity and a nationality. The irish in the north want the south to 'annex' the north, so that it comes under the rule of Dublin. These protestant british unionists will therefore come under the administration of a catholic irish culture and dublin government that is quite alien to them. How would you like it if you were annexed by mexico or cuba or france? A totally different culture, little in common with americans and their culture. The only commonality is the land mass. And just to be clear, it's possible to be a unionist and not simultaneously a loyalist. I'm a unionist, and i don't support these loser, lower class CHAV loyalists burning tires and pallets in the middle of urban areas and stirring up strife. They're the worst and most extreme form of unionism. To say unionist=loyalist is akin to saying antifa=democratic party, or the proud boys= republican party. I dont think you understand the subtle difference between nationality, ethnicity and citizenship. You need to do a bit of reading.
Nationality and citizenship are virtually interchangeable with each other. Ethnicity however, is not. You can be ethnically african and be an american by both nationality and citizenship. Conversely, a black guy born in england can't identify as being ethnically 'english'. He can however, identify as being of english nationality. He may also choose to simultaneously identify as a british person and he will also legally be a british citizen. He however, is not and can never be ethnically english ie. white.

When talking about modern Ireland, one thing that needs to be mentioned was how a Protestant Irish Parliament successfully gained independence for Ireland between 1782 and 1800, during which time Catholics got most of their rights back, with most Irish people of different faiths uniting under the ideologies of either constitutionalism or Republicanism, with both in favour of varying degrees of Irish sovereignty/autonomy and increased personal rights.
This independence ended when a failed Republican Revolution in 1798 led British prime minister William Pitt to intimidate and bribe the Irish Parliament into merging the Kingdom Ireland into the UK after an initial Union vote failed. Ireland’s Parliament was forced to merge with The British one (though the courts and civil service of Ireland remained separate, but nominally subject to Westminster from now on).
People on both sides seem to have completely forgotten this chapter in Irish history, because Protestants and Catholics fighting together for an independent Irish Kingdom doesn’t fit anyone’s narrative, and yet it had a major impact on the island. Unionism, Republicanism and Constitutionalism all originate from the original Irish volunteers that used the opportunity of the American Revolution distracting Britain to revolt in 1782. This heralded the independence and has shaped all aspects of Irish politics, ever since.
