It's the utter disbelief of what happened that is so accurate. you're so angry but you don't actually show it 🤣
Been there done that. Completely real feeling.
It's happened, once.
I learned after that...
HC with FF are still my favorite modes.
I've felt that. You switch of your game, lay on your bed and stare at the ceiling for 10 minutes. Then the full anger hits and you scream.
you don't actually show it case showing it would imply storming the devs servers with an iron mace and slay everyone lol
cause*
The " I'm furious right now...huh..." was just so spot on, the moment when its slowly setting in.
That's the truly terrifying kind of furious. The furious where you have the most pure lucidity ever. That's when s*** happens. 😂
But that's kind alike real life isn't it. Things are going great then "Mind The Bus".
I took Rowan’s smirk at the end to denote, “wow, I actually feel something again”
Yeah, not for me. If I'm really pissed, I'd be swearing so hard I'd auto-switch to my mother tongue because English isn't sufficient enough. And I'd still have a sore throat 3 hours later.
Same for celebrating tbh. I lost my voice for a while after I finally managed to survive Radahn.
@@akechijubeimitsuhide If I'm truly furious at a game, usually a FromSoftware game where I've permanently lost a ton of souls/blood echoes/runes, then I get very calm just so as not to damage something. I do swear a lot when gaming in general, so when I go quiet and just save and quit the game then I'm usually absolutely furious about whatever happened.
Yelling myself hoarse because I beat a tough boss is what I did when I finally killed the Nameless King in DS3. It also happened with I killed Mohg at level 79 with a fucked up elbow (I broke it and it didn't get fixed for 8 weeks thanks to worker's comp being the slowest thing ever) without the shackle and without a maxed out weapon or mimic tear (I did have his purification tear though). It still was the most fun I've had in Elden Ring.
Fun fact: The record holder for longest Minecraft hardcore game was killed by a daytime creeper blast while gathering wood.
Could you not just beat the world record by walling yourself off and just afk, with some food source at hand ?
@@alexgac1801 Traditionally, creepers are generated randomly as well as spawn points, to defeat that.
Imagine if i was in hardcore milions of blocks from spawn kills a warden and did all possible things and dies from a glitch
That also reminds me, Ph1lza 5 year long Minecraft world was ended by a baby zombie.
Yeah but he died to his own stupidity by wearing an elytra in a cave.
There's no jokes in this sketch, this is just actually how hardcore mode is. I'm not crying, you're crying.
Funny part about hardcore modes, a lot of the games that have it are long and grindy; most people's death ends up being the result of getting complacent and not paying attention, or like our dear heroes, a lag spike. You almost never die to the big bad boss, it's always the mobs you've killed 50 times, and you just weren't up for the 51st.
Creepers.
In hard core Minecraft, blast protection is much more important.
But they still get me. Somehow.
Maybe from above, maybe just around a "safe" corner.
Boulders gate 3 game crash actually save my honour mode run, ambushed, 5 cries in a row and was out of healing potions for my 2 front liners was not a great combo
This is basically most Zomboid runs: you fight and survive the big hordes, just to get bitten and infected by a stray lone zombie.
Unless its PoE/D4/etc where you get 1 shot from a trash mob because they only know how to make enemy dmg broken as difficulty goes up.
Or doing something dumn like falling when building your base in a survival game.
The unbelief in their voice, the shock, trying to process things...
That was great acting.
Indeed.
Disbelief
disbelief*
@@MicovskiMC yeah, I remembered the correct word later 🤷♂
Top notch
Very accurate, about the lag, the wanting to quit, all of it. I've lost a couple characters on hardcore for lag, and it does make you want to give up a game for a LONG time(if not just giving it up entirely), and that's why so many players are getting upset about the idea of hardcore with a game that can ONLY be played online, on the servers. There's a lot of arguments to be had over how hardcore gaming is these days, and lag is one of those things that factors in, even with amazing internet.
I love Ironman/Hardcore/CommitmentMode games. It makes things like Hollow Knight, X-Com and Rimworld have an extra level of whew. But PoE? Diablo 3? Fuck off! :D
@@Buggaton Ahh those diablo 3 memories. I wanted to enjoy hardcore so much but i kept losing characters to lag spikes from the servers or full disconnections untill i eventually gave up. If a game is going to be online it would be nice to have a system in place to recover your character if your death was caused by the server.
That Lag Spike was a true game-ender. Unfair but added to the suspense. Keep improvising, each vid is better than the last!
Like losing in a battle Royale because someone in the lobby has shit internet which makes anyone near them lag so u die to total bs because someone has McDonald's wifi
"Oh. We just died. Due to ... This was completely out of our control. Oh. Wow" and the emotions - so much about the life for me
Yup, exactly. There is a layer there where it's not about the game at all...
This is so... outrageous...
The calm fury......... Speechless, broken, and too angry to show it.
@@shipso6116 felt that hard, man. i’m not sure if most of the comments are missing the point, or if some of us need to lay off the existential dread 🥲
This was legit an amazing sketch. As soon as the bandits were there I knew it was over. Just didn't expect the lag to get ya. The armor was absolutely sick too.
Yeah, I was expecting the bandits to be higher level than they were prepared to fight. But a dumb thing like lag makes more sense for the point of the sketch. Died for reasons beyond your control.
Just when they got their dream equipment, to rub extra salt in the wound 🤣
Imagine if the bandits picked up the gear, equipped it and you could meet them again in new game. You'll get one chance to take back everything you got, so you're gonna have to do it carefully. That would be the ultimate revenge.
@@faolan2174 I was expecting them to just be too confident, just to get their shit rocked by being stun locked repeatedly.
100 % agreed, armour was really sick too, especially Rowan's. And that effin DRAGON! Production quality is like whoah
I love the armors you've used in this video! They look gorgeous!
Also, the rage is so relatable. When the emotion is so intense that it takes time to digest and there's no way to express it outwardly...
"This was improvised, too, believe it or not." Nailed it.
3:00 The sheer sadness in ben's voice is so real
this is Path of Exile HC experience..
going going going.. LAG anndd,.. DEAD
Cause Ben is a great actor actually!!
The just calm almost speechless rage that ben and rowan were feeling was so real lol
It would have been nice to jump to them at their computers raging like that German kid from all those years ago. Then Ben could be looking to buy an indestructible keyboard or cash in on the warrantee for the one he just smashed in an episode of Bored.
That poor German kid. He was relatively well known in Germany for his humor and mockery of gaming stereotypes (like the anger), but when he went big nobody got the memo that it was all a sketch.
Perfectly shows the accurate “ numb with rage “ that comes with this . Like your brain can’t process all that loss at once and just shits itself.
"I'm furious right now" Dumbledore screamed
My uncle was a harcore fan of Diablo II. He was playing in hardcore mode or whatever it was called on this game, hundreds, heck maybe thousands of hours into the same build. When he died, he stared at his " you're dead " screen, completely silent and frozen. I think he spent at least 5 full minutes like that before exiting the game. A grave moment in his gaming history.
Back in the day my old group would organize PVP tourneys in hardcore where we played with characters on level 9. Winner got all the loot. That was pretty fun, but beside that I could never imagine playing that, because of all the broken mechanics the old Diablo 2 had.
I sympathize, I also played it hardcore, finally got a high level character, only to lose him to a lag spike against scrubs 😒
I would never play HC in diablo because I always used to die to lightning enhanced monsters.
bruh, hardcore on single player offline game is so different from the online game ...
He was just remembering the entire session and processing it. - When gaming is life, you need to mourn at some point.
1:18 “YOLO” “Literally…”
that was pure comedic genius, whether it was improvised or not
I didn't even catch that, thanks for pointing it out 😂
I felt that rage like it was happening to me.
Also, I love the effect for the lag spike! It was so well done, your team has really just about mastered those effects, so well done!
Dying in a hardcore game is like waking up from a dream you were really invested in
Ben and Rowans chemistry is unparalleled. The improv was amazing and was actually very relatable
3:30 "I am furious right now" Rowan actually said calmly.
Great acting.
@VivaLaDirtLeague
One of your best videos EVER!
You captured the full arc with that.
I have been watching for YEARS and that is definitely one of your best!
I enjoyed the improv a lot. I think this is the video in your channel that I connected to most. Hope you guys do more improv vids in the future.
Rage so potent it leaves you just drained and speechless. Gosh the portrayal was perfect af
This is the first time in VLDL history I've ever felt bad for Ben... as a Minecraft hardcore player, this hurts me to watch. Great acting by the way 👍
Hardcore minecraft aint that hard, i can survive for 100 days without even trying.
But Ben has been in some really powerful and great videos raising awareness about depression. Especially connecting it to and making really relatable and emotional for gamers. An amazing actor for sure!
My world ended because my screen froze while I was in water. Came back in and it was the spectate screen…
@@lucazeroblueversion9346 Careful! , we got a badass on our hands. Do really need the approval so badly? That's sad

Directly calling out diablo at the end with that lag spike thing is spot on
I love Rowan's armor in this sketch. It looks so nice with the green!
"I'm furious right now. Huh."
When the mental turbulence of your raging anger is so intense that you circle around to being extremely calm while soaking in utter disbelief.
Relatable 💯
Man that ending absolutely nails the feeling. Die for a stupid reason in regular mode, you might be visible angry, rage quit for the evening, go on the internet and talk about how the game is bullshit or whatever.
Die on hardcore like that and its just like this. You're still pissed, but there's that underlying calm dgaf because there is zero chance you're starting over. Its just gone. Attachment broke. You're going to go play Free Cell or something from now on.
Then, 2 months later, you've forgotten how it felt to lose the character and want to try it again, because the high you get from escaping death in hardcore is too addicting...
Been there done that.
Free cell has never let us down. Free cell is always with us.
I've died hundreds of times in hardcore mode on many different games, but never stopped playing the games because I died in hardcore mode... even after dying from game bugs\lag. Those who completely give up after dying on hardcore are just weak simps.
@@NTJedi Waow, what a tough guy you are. Impressive!
Do you also tie your own shoelaces or is that next level?

yep, death to a lag spike, the rage is unreal, and their reaction was just so real, like, so unbelievably pissed that they came full circle back to calm.
That walkup with the music tho, oh man so good. Well done guys.
This was so outrageous for Ben, he couldn't even say "outrageous"
Those coat of arms look gorgeous. Hats off to the design and costume team.
They're done by Wyrmwick Creations, awesome prop maker. Kinda pricey but very good quality. It forced me to get back into shape to fit into their armors.
You mean their armour? A coat of arms is a family crest, a symbolic design originally designed to establish identity in battle. Neither of them were displaying one.
@@rei-rei nah mate, a coat of arms is a coat made entirely out of the arms of your defeated enemies. it's right there in the name.

The slow realisation of the "I'll destroy a 1000 suns"-rage is quiet beautifull.
"I think I might be done."
Way too accurate.
Amazing costumes on this one. And a very relatable concept. That special kind of helpless fury is hard to forget.
"I am furious right now"

I love the callback for the "Child safe" game mode.
Sleep, Sleep, Bubble Pop! *Greg Stands Traumatised*
I was beginning to think I was the only one who saw it!!
The fact that I had no idea this was improvised until the very end when you literally said it goes to show that you guys did and always do an amazing job!
Deadpan voice, "My fury knows no bounds, I'm so enraged, I have nothing that can extoll the depths of my hatred...."

Imagine the thieves: "Oh, I found the legendary Sword of Balrog." "And I found the Bow of Phalen! No way, I waited for this to drop for ages!"

This was one of the best ones you've done!
What hurts the most is the fact that there is no glorious last stand, no glorious battle, and no glorious boss fight you usually just die in the most stupid or pathetic way possible
This has to be one of the best sketches ever made. The emotional damage at the end that was so overwhelming that you can’t even be outwardly angry…it’s a feeling so many of us know all too well, and it’s portrayed so perfectly here I laughed for a solid five minutes. Flashbacks to playing certain games with my brothers and this happening and the absolute disbelief after dying😂😂😂 bravo VLDL.
My immediate response to a lag spike in that type of situation would be "Quit" or "power off" depending on the game.
To each their own. Part of the joy of Hardcore Mode is that it's all temporary. It becomes about the journey not the destination.
Plus you get to run through in different playthroughs each time, just to see how far you can make it.
Skycraft: the game that punishes you when you get cocky
So dark souls

In my experience it’s like: no cocky until that boss kills you with 6% hp left, and then you can’t get it below 87%
The old Diablo games were notorious for this mode
This is true 13 years ago I couldn’t get past Taurus demon ( only played games on easy mode and thought I was good) put the game down and never played again until a few years ago finished 3 runs of ds 1 ,1 run of ds2 , 1 run of bb , And 4 Elden ring runs with my last ring run being 8.5 hours
This is the worst...
Failing due to skill issue or not thinking things through does suck
But unfair death makes you go bonkers
True, in diablo 4 I had a level 50 hardcore go into a dungeon and the game kicked me out. When I got into the character select, it said he was dead. That's when I stopped playing that diablo 4.
Yeah I really felt Ben's "I'm going to need some time." The sheer sorrow in those words with the underlying rage is just so relatable.
I was SO expecting them to say "again?" "YUP, let's go!"
Rowan: "I just don't want to play a tank again"
Also Rowan: playing a tank again
Literally couldn't tell the difference between this being improv the whole video, and the other videos where its scripted. I'm sure that comes down to the tremendous amount of hours you guys have already put into filming, and it probably just comes naturally by now. That "beyond rage" at the end is so relatable! XD Nothing like losing it all and just going blank
Well that's one way to lose progress and also relatable too.
That was great, guys! As a hardcore player, if feel that way every single time my character dies. You caught it perfectly.
“I’m gonna need some time” felt that 😂
The inner pain after realising they died to lag is just so......sad and relatable
For being improvised it was excellent. I almost cried when Rowan and Ben died and lost all progress. Every gamer knows the struggle is real.
Side note: that armor they are both wearing is BEAUTIFUL. Well done costume design team!!!
"I am furious right now" he says with one of the most calm voices imaginable
This was by far the best skit you have made, not that your other stuff is shit, this just...hit it! Love you guys, keep making epic art!
This hit the nail on the head perfectly :)
I love hardcore games, but losing everything to a bug or because the cat needed to go out is just stepping over the line from great fun, to completely unfun
Indeed. I'd be fine with "You died, you can't play that character for a month." Then it's still "oh this is garbage" BUT... not a complete loss.
I've never really liked those kinds of game modes (except sometimes in roguelikes where the entire game is specifically designed around it) - the problem I have with it is that 99% of the time the optimal strategies that minimize your chance of dying are just.. unbelievably boring. I mean, yeah, I could play a game in a way that's safe and I never die.. but it turns the game into such a tedious slog that I just completely lose interest in playing the game. It discourages you from fighting difficult fights, and when you do have to fight anything that should've been difficult it often devolves to kiting them for ages or running away as soon as you take any damage at all and then healing.. and the worst part is that you're incentivized to play that way even against trash mobs, not just against bosses. it's just boring playing that way, but if I were trying to minimize my chances of dying then that's how I would play.
Thatr's what the esc button is for...
@@ExpatZ266right? I get so bored when games have no stakes. They feel so much more grindy.

Hard-core mode is definitely a fun idea in the way that if you don't be careful, it costs everything and the intensity from that and the adrenaline of major battles adds the fun you wouldn't normally have, but you have to accept the risk of that fun that comes which is the sour after taste of a game when you lose it all
