Seeing new videos from Vsauce in my sub box seems more of an illusion than anything else ngl

I find this is a good example of how I see without glasses, I can sorta see the details but it strains my eyes so for me I just see what you see from a far, still can see the shapes just not the lines. It’s actually not as bad as this like not as blurry but close enough

Different but similar explanation:
Close up, our eyes see all the frequencies of an image: high frequencies (e.g. white noise) and low frequencies (e.g. big blobs).
From far away, our eyes' angular resolution drops, acting like a low-pass filter, making us only see the low frequencies (the blobs).

This is actually interesting from an art perspective. The local feedback is like the lineart, and the global is like the shading. And you have to get a good grasp on how to use both to draw realistically, but if you just use one or the other I’m you can make something very stylized.

This is super useful from an artists perspective! I often focus on the finer details, but it comes at the cost of the wider picture and it's shapes, making my drawings hard to understand... This explains perfectly this issue with my work and I love it for that

This is why in art, when starting a painting/illustration, You should focus on the overall shape/bigger picture AND THEN add the details.

yknow sometimes I feel like roads are this kind of illusion too, I’ll be lookin at the road far away and it’ll look like water but once you get close it just looks like road. Thought I was seeing render distance limit or something

That's awesome! I just took a class on digital image processing, and we refer to the "local features" as the high frequency component and "global features" as the low frequency component. The Fourier Transform is used all over the place in image processing to separate/manipulate the high or low frequency components of an image

Michael comes back on KRplus every once in a while just to flex his massive big brain in under a minute lol

I learned an awesome drawing technique for realism that’s based on that. Instead of looking at your reference and contouring their local features, you map out the global features first and sketch/paint using shadows. The details will come in last to bring definition. This did me wonders, drawing noses or both eyes was never a problem for me anymore, because I didn’t focus on just one detail, finished drawing it, then went to the next, and so on. I recommend anyone who hasn’t tried to give it a go

Missed opportunity to not say “too close”

One way to explain this is that edges and "abrupt" changes in colors correspond to high frequencies (when you do a 2D Fourier transform) and slowly varying colors correspond to low frequencies. High frequencies also correspond to high angular components, which spread out when you are far away, while low frequencies don't do it as much as they have lower angular components. That's why you can see low frequencies (Marilyn Monroe) when you're far away, because the high frequencies that correspond to Albert Einstein were dispersed away

This can actually revolutionize camouflage.
Image u and your squad look like your enemy’s from far away and up close you can still differentiate them from your enemy’s.
That could cause some logistical problems like unintended friendly fire but there must be some work-arounds to it.
