I’ve always respected Michael so much for his active listening techniques. This was something that took a lot for me to learn to do as a child because of undiagnosed ASD but he never interrupts anyone, and always lets them finish their thoughts before jumping in. It’s so inspiring to watch someone with so much pride and enthusiasm - power - in the room, who doesn’t interrupt others continuously.
I hope Vsauce stays around for a long time. I love the science you do and wish I could be apart of it.

I have epilepsy and for some reason something that happens after I have a seizure is that I usually get upset about red. I have freaked out that there isn't anything red neat me, and I've also freaked out that I don't know what red is, and I've freaked out that there is red things around me. Human beings and brains and colours and how they interact are totally wild haha.

Usually, red should be a more calming color, if you're exposed to it in a non-threatening way. For instance, red light. Lowest visible light on the color spectrum before infrared. Red light therapy is a real thing, that fights inflammation, helps regulate body processes, helps with sleep, etc.
Blue = probably more calming because we think of air, water, breathing, and "Blues" music, which would more likely mellow someone out, than amp them up.
It shouldn't come to us as any shock that we're easily tricked.

Perhaps. It depends on the morality of the converser, since morality and ethical alignment are entirely subjective and arbitrary to existence and it's significance. You could say that, no matter what, all dogs are good dogs, as long as you care about literally nothing else when it comes to situations normal humans would see as dire extremes. And if that were the case, I could assume that the goal of your existence is exclusively to ensure dogs never go extinct. Which they will, but that doesn't matter: the longest time is good enough.

I think the difference between accepting penicillin vs cryogenic freezing is quality of life. Penicillin extends life span sure, but more immediately it improves quality of life. Whereas cryogenic freezing doesn’t guarantee that. Even if physically you could live a good life, who knows what being woken up after years of being basically in an extended coma for years on end would do to someone mentally. You may not like the world you wake up to

Just reminds me of the star trek episode where 20th century businessmen are brought into the utopian future, and they hate it. Nothing makes sense to them, everything they enjoy is frowned upon in the new culture and they are so out of touch that they would never be able to get a meaningful job there. They end up wanting to go back to their old lives very quick.

I have a profound respect for michael after finding out that he had to play league of legends for 10 days
Truly, a worse mental torture than the isolation episode.
Okay so I'm totally not crying at the kids after they managed to get better. That kid saying he no longer has migraines, & now he's actually excited for high school, broke me.
& if you think I'm being ridiculous, wait until you have a child of your own. My 3 year old son has had to go through so much since he was born, & the feeling of seeing your child happier & able to live the life they want is so powerful. This whole field of "curing children through placebo" deserves all the grants & all the Nobel prizes.

They were videos he just wanted to make, so he made them

Everything about it was high quality, intuitive, and at the same time many of the subject of these episodes are still so mysterious for all of us, others having real life applications. You don't have the slightest clue what is going on in other people's lives. I myself am not an addict anymore but I used to be one a few years ago due to some major hardships in life and you of all people should know that we didn't choose for it to be this way. It takes a lot of self control to get over drug addiction and some people may or may not have the strength to overcome it. My life has improved significantly due to another person lending out their hand and making appreciate the positive aspects of life rather than the negative ones. We all are different individuals with different beliefs, experiences, strength, weakness, etc. at the end of the day, even I dislike a situation where a person suffering with addiction just give up on any hope of overcoming it. But instead of making light of someone going through a difficult situation we could help them get better and it is the least thing we could do. Have a nice day :)

You can get over an addiction, with a metric fuckton of effort, you CAN choose to not be an addict anymore, it's just hard as hell. But absolving others of their blame for their own addiction is not going to help, they fucked up, and they're dealing with the consequences, telling them that they never fucked up'll just keep them from putting in the effort to get better. People don't get better by being told what they wanna hear they get better through taking earnest criticism.

This is great stuff. Not sure why some people focus on the "deception" aspect given that the researchers are up front with what they are doing. And the fact there are positive impacts on lives of the young people, not a bad outcome. Hope they are still doing well.

I think the biggest issue people have with placebo and hypnotic type of stuff is; that they feel embarrassed and humiliated when they find out it was their own brain. Alot of people dont know just how powerful our own brains are.

I rlly dunno if anyone has made an explanation on the "how chinese ppl associate with red" topic but in short there was a legend about a certain monster called "年" (which, I guess you can translate it directly into "year") that basically hunts people especially small children during New Year. People find out that it is scared of the color red, so they just put red things everywhere like the lantern, envelopes nd firecrackers stuff like that (it's also afraid of loud noises)
and that protected people from the monster by scaring it away, since then the color red is associated with luck and joy and almost some sort of safety in chinese culture (especially to the older generation who directly absorbed this very big part of our cultural tradition)
I think one of the reasons red is so salient and attention grabbing also has to do with our physiology. We only have RGB cones in our eyes, but blue is so predominantly the sky, and green predominantly related to grass/foliage, which leaves red as the only remaining ‘pure’ color to use that is not overly stimulated in our environment.

I'm so glad he made this, it's been such a powerful revelation - especially the part where he explains why the experiments in earlier Mind Field episodes didn't produce the most 'sensational for TV' results; it's truly incredible to see now the work he's put behind the series considering he started out just as a KRplusr and now he's actually highlighting fascinating studies into fields like placebo that researchers don't want to pursue, I mean the man has already drastically improved the quality of life for some of those kids and their families by extension. One of the most underrated content creators alive, this man.
This placebo research is so important. I feel it is an uncomfortable topic within medicine and just life in general which we often choose to ignore. Better to confront reality and integrate it into our lives than pretend it doesn't exist.

My biggest concern about using the placebo effect to treat conditions is the medical ethics surrounding deception in treatment. For example, if any patient asks about how the treatment works, a medical provider is obligated to disclose that in advance which could render the treatment void.

But so much has been taken from me, cruelly and heartlessly, and by the person I trusted the most in the entire universe, that I can't bear the thought of feeling this pain for another several hundred years. I've been stuck in it for 22 months (and 18 days, but who's counting?), already, and it still hurts too much to bear, and yet I must bear it, because others count on me. Were it just my choice, I wouldn't even still be here, hurting. The pain is too deep, too much.
Why would I want to extend that, rather than another 2 decades, but several more centuries? Absolutely no!

@Viktor Birkeland I've been playing the game since season 3, if I remember correctly, and I've just become numb to the toxicity, If someone starts running their mouth, I mute them, and focus on the game. And I rarely read, or participate in, post-game shit-talking (friendly chat is fine, but rarely happens). I play games to have fun and being toxic defeats that purpose, in my opinion

The non-verbal autistic part was a bit rough. Just because they're not speaking doesn't mean they don't know anything, or that they don't understand speech. A placebo isn't contingent upon the organism being a "normal" human, or even human at all.

Placebos are amazing, the only time I know of experiencing one was a year or so ago. I had recently started playing trumpet, and lost one of mouthpieces. My dad found says mouthpiece after a few months, and I thought it was smaller than my current one (smaller mouthpieces make higher notes easier.) I had been having trouble with high notes for a while, but as soon as I used that mouthpiece, I was able to play multiple notes higher. It wasn't until a month or two later that I finally realized the mouthpiece was exactly the same size as my other one, and I had placeboed myself.
This has probably jappened to me without me noticing, although it has happened to my friends alot and it's sort of funny haha.
Yeah this is totally a thing. Most people refer to is as psyching yourself out (if it is a negative) or being "in the zone" when it is a positive. It isnt that hard to relate to and then apply it to medical issues, etc. As much as I hate pseudo sciencey things, I also personally know many people that have been legitimately helped by them because of placebo, so it is hard for to criticize things like that.
In this case I don't know if really is a placebo effect. I used to play the french horn and something similar happened to me. The mouth piece that I lost were larger than the new one and it should be easier to reach high notes. But when I found my old one, it was easier. There where two important factors: the old one was better fabricated, was a Paxman, and my muscles were more used to it. Maybe if I trained more with the new one maybe this wouldn't be the case anymore.
Crazy thing about actualizing placebos sometimes is that you can just call that a coincidence and was because certain timing in your life for all different reasons. Like you could have just lost a touch and got better at playing the high notes again after positive alignments in ur life

Sometimes I go back through Vsauce playlists just to have good background noise stimuli to watch when I'm doing stuff or idle, and every time I come back to the Placebo video and the part where the kids are reporting their progress draws tears to my eyes, I'm so glad to see that kind of success in what are overall extremely hard to tackle symptoms.
I feel like Michael has always been crazy but it’s just slowly creeping up out of him more and more. 😂
