    "How do you clean the iron off the magnet?" Good question. I would say that learning to accept the limits of your will is part of the meditative process.
    I would also say that if you remove as much as you can by hand, something sticky can do the rest. The putty included in the box works well. Its adhesion to the filings is stronger than the magnetic force from the magnet. Plus, the putty already contains small iron filings :)

      @@waiitwhaat Yeah, kinda. The only difference is that for a gravity assist to increase speed and not just change direction, you need the planet to be moving.

      @@khatharrmalkavian3306 I can understand that, but im sure that someone could construct a clean environment for the experiment, say have all the components contained in a sealed clear box. Im sure some experiments they send up there are much more complicated than that to figure out a procedure.

    This would be an interesting thing to do in space, so that gravity wasn't as much of an influence.
    (In a sealed container so that it didn't pollute the surrounding habitat, of course.)

      @@doctorthee if you get a wooden platform, put the magnet, filings, and camera on the platform, then drop the platform, it’ll act as though there is no gravity because gravity is effecting everything the same way. You could only get like 10 seconds though per drop. Also, you’ll need a sturdy camera

    Try dropping the magnet from somewhere high together with the magnetic thingy, and film it from afar, then in editing, pan the frame as to always have the falling magnet and magnetic thingy at the same spot in the frame. This way it could almost be done without gravity

    Wow. I've seen these lines on a piece of paper but seeing it in the air like this is so much better. It's insane that you can see lines forming just like you see in the drawings, which is something you expect to be more representative rather than quite accurate.

    As an electrician, coming from learning about this in my course to actually seeing it in action it's interesting to watch. What a force magnetism is, with how it causes ferromagnetic materials to react to it and how we utilise it. Even to create the power I'm using right this moment to watch this short.

    You wouldn't want to add this to the box due to the mess (and inhalation problems), but Powder form of Fe2O3 (red iron oxide) will show the magnetic field even better due to the grain size/weight of the particles (it's more akin to very fine dust.) You could dust if from above the magnet and have a continues stream going.

    For those who don't want iron particles all over their room trying to recreate this, put iron filings in a viscous liquid like syrup or honey and place strong magnets around the container of the syrup/honey. Make sure the container is a non magnetic material and a bad conductor of electricity like plastic.

    Also try this:
    Put a bar magnet on a piece of blank paper.
    Place a magnetic compass around one of the poles.
    Draw a dot where the needle marks South and a small triangle where it marks North.
    Slide the compass over until the triangle is touching the new South needle. Draw another small triangle where the needle points North.
    Connect the dots/triangles.
    Repeating this process over and over, you map out the electric field lines on the paper.

    Cool. For an instant one of the fragments seemed to slingshot around the magnet. I can imagine spending the entire afternoon trying to make a smaller magnet or a piece of metal orbit the bigger magnet. I wonder how many variations (dampening the EF) I could try before I get bored of it. Making a full revolution around the magnet would be the goal of course.

    This also shows about planets and gravity. If you look some of that dust gets pulled by the magnets but they are moving to fast so they get shot out away from the magnets
