“What if I told you I could get you to fall in love with me…?”
College-bound romantic Daniel Bae and Jamaica-born pragmatist Natasha Kingsley meet-and fall for each other-over one magical day amidst the fervor and flurry of New York City. Sparks immediately fly between these two strangers, who might never have met had fate not given them a little push. But will fate be enough to take these teens from star-crossed to lucky in love? With just hours left on the clock in what looks to be her last day in the U.S., Natasha is fighting against her family’s deportation as fiercely as she’s fighting her budding feelings for Daniel, who is working just as hard to convince her they are destined to be together.
A modern-day story about finding love against all odds, “The Sun Is Also a Star” explores whether our lives are determined by fate or the random events of the universe.
The film stars Yara Shahidi (“Grown-ish”) as Natasha and Charles Melton (“Riverdale”) as Daniel, along with John Leguizamo (“John Wick: Chapter 2”).
Directed by Ry Russo-Young (“Before I Fall”), the film is based on the acclaimed bestseller by Everything, Everything author Nicola Yoon. The Sun Is Also a Star was #1 on the New York Times bestseller list and has received multiple accolades, including: 2016 National Book Award Finalist; Amazon’s Best Book of 2016 in YA; Amazon’s Top 20 Children’s Books of 2016 in YA; the New York Times Notable Children’s Books of 2016; and Entertainment Weekly’s 10 Best Books of 2016.
Russo-Young directed from a screenplay by Tracy Oliver (“Girls Trip”). The film’s producers are Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton, who served as producers on “Everything, Everything.” Pamela Hirsch served as executive producer.
The behind-the-scenes creative team includes director of photography Autumn Durald Arkapaw (“Teen Spirit”), production designer Wynn Thomas (“Hidden Figures”), editor Joe Landauer (“Before I Fall”), and costume designer Deirdra Elizabeth Govan (“Sorry to Bother You”). The music is by Herdís Stefánsdóttir (“The Hate U Give”).
Warner Bros. Pictures and Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures present An Alloy Entertainment production, “The Sun Is Also a Star,” due in theaters nationwide May 17, 2019.
This film has been rated PG-13 for some suggestive content and language. - 엔터테인먼트

And pink headphones (like hot pink)
Veena Lohiya I mean yeah but we should know by now that not every single detail is gonna be put in the movie I mean it always happens in the other movies adapted from books 😬😅
The thing that annoyed me the most about this movie is that they took away the relationships and connections they make with other people and how they're all connected in some sort of way. The lady in the beginning of the book, the lawyer and etc. Her relationship with her dad is a big deal in the book but we never saw that. They're more to it than them just falling in love and that's why I love the book so much but they never showed that in the movie.
dang it that's what made the book so special and different from other YA :/
THISS especially the Irene character :(( I love the book format sm and the book is amazing but I just don't think her books are meant to be movies anyways. Like it's better to interpret it using words
I have been a bookworm and everything, everything and the sun is also a star are my favs despite not being of my favourite genre...should i watch the movie?? Is this like how they ruined all the bright places or?🥹🥹
Because that's literally book all information details have indicate on it, if they try to indicate in the movie it will take a very long movie, and it make a boring to watch
@@mqiiraa Ikr, Irene was literally the beginning and end of the book, the one thing that made the story come full circle

To all those wondering why people have a problem with the casting of this movie:
On the surface it may seem that the people complaining are doing way too much and overly concerned with race but it’s more nuanced than that. Hollywood has a history of whitewashing characters of color that are written as black or Asian (as these characters were). Colorism, or the preference for mixed and lighter skinned people over those with darker skin is also a huge issue. The fact that in a story written about a fully Korean man and black Jamaican woman they found two actors that are half white is very telling that Hollywood still has a problem seeing people of color as attractive unless they’re mixed with white. It’s so rare to see fully Asian men and darker skinned black women in movies, let alone as romantic partners- so yes, the casting directors really dropped the ball on a great opportunity and gave us more of the same
But aren't there characters portrayed fully black and Asian in the movie sooo why does it matter that In real life their faces are slightly different so I do feel everyone is reading g to deeply into it and want the actors to be the exact replica of the book but ppl need to calm down because ur all probably going to see the movie first thing may 17 in this day and age everyone is so ready to complain about things and speak so passionately about things they don't try and change and are often guilty of when it makes you look good you speak out on it and I'm tired of ppl calling Yara light skin when she is a beautiful brown skinned girl and just because she is mixed doesn't mean she is light skin and I know kids who are light skin and have 2 BLACK parents I know a girl who is one of my bestfriends and is Porturican and black and is dark skin so ppl don't take genes I to account and putting even the half blacks down is showing that u all partake in colorist ideals too bc it goes both ways when you hate on dark skin AND when you hate on light skin I even know another Porturican who looks fully Hispanic she showed us a picture of her dad that her mom confirmed to us he was black Black like my dad but ppl will make mixed ppl feel bad and tell them their not black and make them hurt inside feeling lost between two races and we push them away we are cause of are hardships sometimes we are not always the victim and darkskin ppl are the first to have something to say about it because we won't love ourselves and we pull each other down instead of building each other up
Srry for the long para but I just had to get that out
Oh yea and lots of Jamaicans come in different colors soo it wouldn't matter what color she was as a Jamaican we all come and different colors lots of us are mixed we just all need to learn to love ourselves and come together as a black community and ignore whites ideas on Beauty all together because they have no say in black beauty because their not black only we can see the real beauty of the black culture
Why are you responding to yourself

As dark skin women when we talk about colourism we are NOT saying that we hate light skinned actresses or that we hate light skinned people, we are saying that we hate feeling underrepresented. We are saying that we hate that our erasure within popular culture makes us feel like we are not good enough when ALL black girls are supposed to be magic. I do believe we are all black no matter if you’re dark skinned, light skinned, medium -whatever. But if that is true then surely we should be represented all shades, all body types, all hair-types. This used to be my favourite book but I’m not sure I can support this film or any other like it until YA adaptation genre changes and soon. It’s going to get left behind because all other genres are changing.
So I think it's better to say you don't feel appreciated then some ppl trying to shame ppl because they aren't dark enough. Which is bs I don't understand when skin determined your blackness. I'm not saying you are but a ton of ppl do and it's hurtful to ppl who mixed raced . Like why we have to be the blunt of anger from all races. We not black we not Spanish we not white enough so annoying.

Yes, I understand that this is an adaptation of the book and not meant to be a word for word replica. However, the reason why many people are upset that Daniel's actor is half korean is because his character is supposed to be a first gen child to korean immigrants. To change something like that is not only drastic, but also changes a lot about who his character initially is. Charles being half doesn't mean he doesn't count as 'asian' but it definitely clashes with the character of Daniel Bae.
@Emestina Gaya fr tho
Well luckily, most people don't care or are like me and assumed he was full-blooded Korean.
Taryn , he looks handsome
Isn’t that the point of acting lol
Jackson! and it doesn't matte if he's half Korean or Full Korean. If people wanna base it like that, you could say that Jackson, is Chinese, shouldn't be in Got7 because it's a K-pop group and he's Chinese. Now don't take this the wrong way, I love Jackson, but him being able to speak Korean allows him to be in K-pop group, right?, Just like Charles being a good actor and half Korean allows him to play Daniel and again, it doesn't matte if he's half or full blood Korean...……...sorry if this didn't make sense, sounded like It made sense in my head
Just saw this film. For the very first time. Gotta say I really liked this movie. And it’s probably one of the more overlooked movies of this year. The 2 leads have amazing chemistry. And I do understand people being upset because he doesn’t have his ponytail ,red tie, pinkheadphones and I think the filmmakers wanted to make it more impactful how they met cause if they met in a record store like in the book it wouldn’t hit as hard as them meeting for the first time when he saved her life: and I get you wanna stay close to the source material . (Trust me I’m a comic book fan I want material as close to the source as possible) but that honestly doesn’t make the movie any better or worse. The movie in my opinion I liked it. But it won’t get better if he has a “ponytail or she has headphones that I’ll see for a few mins because in the actual film “spoiler alert” it’s not in the movie all that much and if you see in the trailer once he saves her life that’s the last time you see those headphones.

Dude I REALLY hope they find a way of including that in the movie
The Children of Aphrodite yess this is so true I feel like there are also so many parts of the book you can't capture. I haven't even seen the movie and I know the book will still be better
annina roy You simply can’t recreate the beautiful wording and absolute synchronicities that the book included without it feel cheesy overdone or underdone. It’s a shame because thought I didn’t particularly continue reading for the main storyline, the side stories breed life, and a realistic representation of it’s hardships, into the book. Though beautiful, they already messed up the authenticity of casting, and design that was specifically stated! Ugh.
Warner Bros. is kinda ridiculous. Why bother putting this movie in theaters if we already know everything from a 2 minute trailer? Those business tactics are astounding
yet, it will still sell more tickets than your movie.
I totally agree with ya mate.
im glad we watched two different trailers cause i dont know everything lol. its all about the journey and it could end like other great films i wont spoil where they DONT end up together in the end, which is what we expect in love stories but isnt always the case in reality......

AMAZING MOVIE ! I recommend y’all to watch it ! I got to attend the premiere it was a great movie.
The problem is Natasha is full Jamaican and Daniel is full Korean. How hard is it to find an actor who actually fits the position. All people should have representation but the context of the story is of a 100% Jamaican girl and 100% Korean boy. It is a very important factor of the story. Its important because Natasha's family is straight from Jamaica as well as Daniel's from Korea.
Also the people who made this movie missed other really important parts of the book. The pink headphones Natasha's father got her when they got to the U.S. She chose pink because she was a kid and they were her favorite color. Its important to have that emotional attachment for the story. Daniel is supposed to have a ponytail because it is one of the things that first really attracted Natasha.
I am so disappointed
Edit: I'm sorry that I assumed everyone read the book. In the book Daniels parents immigrated from Korea and Natasha and her family came into the U.S from Jamaica. I did not mean to come off as saying ethnically either of them have to be 100% of anything. I really just meant thats where they came from.
Thank you!!!
Not to mention the fact Daniel left early for his interview was to get the ponytail cut off at his mother’s insistence! The whole story falls apart without it!
Jamaican isn't a race.
I hear about the 📖 i was going to read it then i see this well thank you for tell me the read story because i would of got confuse
I agree, and I believe Its because its a Hollywood film. period. In the past they have cast white women to play female Asian characters: www.nytimes.com/2016/04/23/opinion/why-wont-hollywood-cast-asian-actors.html
I don't understand it. This is 2019 and there is still struggle to have diversity in a film-with a story based on... diversity? With all the Asian male talent living right outside Hollywood in CA, makes no sense. Haven't seen it, but I heard that was discussion over Crazy Rich Asians, which sounded like plenty of stereotypes imo. As with the symbolism from the book, shows the directors were not in touch with the story (if that was significant, never read the book). Once again, Hollywood. www.nbcnews.com/news/asian-america/hollywood-still-casts-based-looks-even-it-makes-strides-diversify-n899306

i’ve never seen this movie but i watched the trailer for it in 2019 and now crimson and clover is my favorite song so, honestly, thank you movie ❤
From what I see the story and the concept are quite interesting, but this trailer is just pure cringe
Whatever we all have our own opinion
it’s based on a book, maybe you would like that better
@@sarinakhera342 That's what I thought too. Almost everyone in the comment section is talking about the book.
Losshe watch it it’s really good
The movie is entirely cringe. The whole “give me a day and I’ll make you fall in love with me.” I thought it couldn’t get worse when they were in this dark blue weird room and then he started singing. Its a truly awful movie with horrendous acting. Worst movie I’ve ever seen. So un-believeable with cringey wooden acting like I don’t actually know how they got away with it. I’ve never seen a movie so un-believable
Ok this is so different than the book! The tie was red and the headphones were pink. Also natasha didnt tell daniel her name right away
Yall didnt watch the movie how you know that.
Wowww a few little details that aren’t exactly spot-on makes the whole movie *sooo different* from the book...
Olivia Rae ik!!
welp it's me, Star there is a book
Olivia Rae dude you only named three differences
I wonder what they’ll do for Charlie if this was their character choice. And REALLY? Jeans for Natasha? Come on, you didn’t even read the book. She was wearing a long skirt! HOW ELSE DOES DANIEL SEE HER BEAUTIFUL LEGS?? Such small details that are constantly repeated in the book. 🤦🏾♀️
Dude it was RED tie that was literally the most iconic thing
I was thinking they should’ve cast two actors in the starring roles that resembled April and Ethan on Chicago Med. But, it’s like the producers were like “The girl can’t look too black and the guy can’t look too Asian.”
The first song is Oil and water - Rationale the second song is crimson and clover by Tommy James and the Shondells.
Thank me later :)
You're a lifesaver
THANK YOU!
harsh gupta thank you
That guy looks like handsome Squidward
Lmfaooo😂
I already saw that comment
😂😂😂
💀💀😂
I WILL STALK YOU & STALK YOU & STALK YOU & YOU FINALLY LOVE ME! the movie
awwwwwww so cute
YESS
I read the book and I was hoping for a movie.
where’s his ponytail at though it’s kind of central to his character design
RIGHT!!
he’s supposed to have a red tie and she had pink headphones tbh i’m mad that’s détails but it makes it more real 🤷🏼♀️
And the red tie and pink headphones and afro. They were practically iconic in the book
And the red tie!
Lol I loved the book I'm disappointed too but hopefully they'll get everything else right
Ah the ole entire family is darkskin except the daughter storyline
AJ Leary exactly! there’s never a dark skin female lead!
You peeped that too lol?
@@em.415 And her family are immigrants? Yeah they thought they was slick with that. No ma'am.
Just like K.C undercover
Rabbit lover _ well yeah, but the mom was somewhat light, to be fair. i get what you’re saying though
Thank you for saving me the time to go see it? I just saw the entire movie, apparently x_x
I LOVE THIS BOOK SOOOOO FREAKKKIIIIIINNNGGGGGG MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND WITH THESE ACTORS.... SOOOOO SEEING IT TOMORROW!!!!!!!!!! (He had a ponytail btw and so many other things too are not there. But thats a movie for you, and a book. Hahaha.)
So apparently she is supposed to be dark skinned and he is supposed to be fully asian ...i’m not surprised by hollywood but maybe they casted them because they are popular rn? I do agree that there needs to be more representation on both parts.
No she wasn't supposed to be dark skinned. She was brown skinned.
@@danaphillips6684 she was supposed to be fully black. yara is half arab(white)
Noreen Vanderslice Some Arabs are white. Arab is not a race. The more you know 🌈
E M. she right arab are maybe white but not like Europeen or american okey
@@jzhvaeduh I agree with that. But Natasha wasn't dark skinned. Look it up.
i'm already crying i love this book SO MUCH
Do you need a tissue or something?
Barbara Britto yes same!
I’m very supprised to say that I think I would genuinely watch this!
Love
Tom
just finished reading the book and it was absolutely amazing.
Is this the dude from Ariana Grandes video???
I think so, i clicked bc i saw him in the thumnail & was like he looks familiar
Yes nd he is also in riverdale
He's also in other movies and shows too
And riverdale
@@iluvZ3NDAYA yes sis i clicked so fast cause he cute
Why are they going on a date if she’s about to be deported?
My parents would’ve been so pissed
Ask Nicola Yoon abt that, ig
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
You have to read the book!
It's explained. You can either read the book (which I reccomend, or just wait for the movie.
Read the book and yeah her parents get hella pissed 😂
Star Cherry sooo they can get married and avoid deportation 🙄 lol 😆
"compared to the life span of the universe our lives begin and end in a single day" fulfil your purpose while you still have breath in you, life is a mystery 💛
He is not wearing a red tie and a ponytail. It is not in the way that i imagined.
I onced saved a pretty girl from walking in front of a car by grabbing her bag and pulling her back too! We've been married for 7 years!
Jk, she turned around and smacked me and yelled creep, and when I told her what happened she told me to mind my own damn business 😂
Life is stranger than fiction I guess!
You did a good thing? That's what matters, I guess?😂😂😂😂
Bruh same shit here! Girl was on her phone and when i pulled her shoulder from being hit by a car, she yelled out help. I told her don't flatter yourself. I was just trying to push you into traffic lol
Damn sorry bro. But I’ve had a good laugh, also, you did the right thing😂😂😂
🤣🤣you lost before even getting it
So yara and Amandla are the only girls that can play black girls in romantic movies ? Just sad. We need more representation and from the comments apparently she was dark skinned in the movie. Smh
@@user-mb9nm7bq5e I thing shes talking about rom coms. When have you ever seen a dark skinned black woman in a big budget romantic comedy? Are we not romantic enough for hollywood?
Bar San Can you name a young dark skinned actress that could’ve taken this role? And is Viola Davis the only example you got??? She already made her mark in the industry. NAME ANOTHER LEAD IN MOVIES.
@@user-mb9nm7bq5e shut up, you're in every comment invaliding other people's feelings or opinions.
@@UnbreakableLexii Kiki layne, ryan destiny, or any other talent that is auditioning right now. btw that's what they want to make you think, that there's no other actresses.
Brenda Charles No I agree with you. Keyword “auditioned.” Btw I love Ryan. She is drop dead beautiful.
though everyone has valid reasons to be disappointed or underwhelmed, I am more than happy that black and Asian people, immigrants, and interracial couples are getting another form of representation AT THE SAME TIME. Idk about ya'll but I think that's awesome.
Im currently reading the book and let me tell you that its so good ❤
As a dark skinned teenager, I just feel like I have no real teen icons to look up to. Like zendaya, amandla, and yara don't appeal to my dark skinned reality, they appeal to a minority of the black spectrum's reality. This constant lack of representation in society gives the idea the black skinned women are not good enough. That lighter skinned is preferred. I don't hate lighter skinned black people, I just want these celebrities to realize that they are taking away prime moments for dark skinned women to shine, for girls like me to feel like enough for anyone and anything.
Yeah, and true equality will never exist. If someone is good enough for the role, the industry will choose them. We don’t get to say who gets to be in what movie, because we’re not the ones directing it. If you want someone to be in a certain movie, start a film company and hire your ideal actors and actresses with hundreds and thousands of dollars.
Stop expecting to get what you want just because you’re a minority.
Not to mention you just got an entire film in Black Panther about your color. Are there no role models for you in there? There seems to be plenty of dark skinned males and females in there.
The movie will never be the same as the book, and it’s all preference. Stop nitpicking two entirely different industries. Media isn’t here to promote equality, it’s here to make money.
Ryan Destiny! She’s 24, two years older than Zendaya. She plays “Alex” on Star that appears on Fox. She’s amazing!
Honestly, you should look up to women with great characteristics instead of their skin color. You're more than you're skin color.
Yara is not light and Natasha isn't dark skinned. She was described as warm and glowing brown in the book!
@@danaphillips6684 Yara is light brown skin, can pass as lightskin in some lightings. But she is biracial, not fully black like it says in the book
**veronica left the chat**
She’s in a movie already, on top of filming Grown-ish? Niiice. I definitely believe she has a great future in film ahead of her.❤️
"I'm waiting for something not an apology~"
Thatssss~I can't wait to watch !!!
Linn syw omg ikr😍
isn’t she supposed to be dark skinned and jamaican 🤷🏾♀️
No in the book she has golden skin ,plus not all Jamaicans are dark skinned..
THANK U
im jamaican and not dark skinned 🤷🏽♀️
Is she supposed to be dark skinned? And the movie says she grew up in NY so probably she has my NY characteristics.
She's dark skined. Visibly. She looks Far East African. Your right she really doesn't look Jamaican
It’s kinda crazy how both actors are mixed race playing fully black and Asian characters
-_-
Ikr?! What's worse is that when you try to call out the fact that half white biracial people are playing fully Black and Asian characters, people would use strawman arguements like "what's wrong with light skinned black people/ half white half Asian people?"
As a full on Asian, I’d represent this Asian. Cause whether you’re half or full. YOURE Asian. YOU BETTER BE ASIAN!!! 😂 I’m proud of this dude cause he doesn’t forget his culture. (My mom reminds me everyday whether I’m half or not I gotta remember both my cultures (Thai and Laotian))
hypebubble well he’s not half white so......
Who give a fuck get over your self stop hating there both beautiful people mix kids are the best looking tbh
Miguel Zaragoza what you just said really fucking stinks, it smells, pls don’t ever talk again, you’re furthermore proving that colorism is a thing 🧐
I don't care what anyone says, this movie is INSANELY amazing.
This trailer showed way too much! The movie was definitely worth the watch if you’re a sucker for love ❤️. Their acting was great and the kisses were perfect
