From Warner Bros. Pictures and Amazon Studios, “The Goldfinch” is the film adaptation of Donna Tartt’s globally acclaimed best-selling novel, which won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction.
Directed by BAFTA Award winner John Crowley (“Brooklyn”), the film features a multigenerational cast led by Ansel Elgort (“Baby Driver”) as Theo Decker and Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman (“The Hours,” “Big Little Lies”) as Mrs. Barbour.
Theodore “Theo” Decker was 13 years old when his mother was killed in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The tragedy changes the course of his life, sending him on a stirring odyssey of grief and guilt, reinvention and redemption, and even love. Through it all, he holds on to one tangible piece of hope from that terrible day...a painting of a tiny bird chained to its perch. The Goldfinch.
“The Goldfinch” is produced by Nina Jacobson (“The Hunger Games” films, “American Crime Story”) and Brad Simpson (“World War Z,” “American Crime Story”). Mari Jo Winkler-Ioffreda, Kevin McCormick, Sue Kroll and Courtenay Valenti are the executive producers. The screenplay is by Oscar nominee Peter Straughan (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”), based on the novel by Donna Tartt, which spent 30 weeks on The New York Times Best Sellers list.
The film also stars Oakes Fegley (“Pete’s Dragon”) as Young Theo, Aneurin Barnard (“Dunkirk”) as Boris, Finn Wolfhard (“Stranger Things,” “It”) as Young Boris, with Sarah Paulson (“The Post,” “American Crime Story”) as Xandra, Luke Wilson (“The Royal Tenenbaums”) as Larry, and Jeffrey Wright (“The Hunger Games” films) as Hobie. Rounding out the main ensemble cast are Ashleigh Cummings (“Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries”) as Pippa, Willa Fitzgerald (“Little Women”) as Kitsey Barbour, Aimee Laurence (“Chicago P.D.”) as Young Pippa, Denis O’Hare (“American Horror Story”) as Lucius Reeve, and Boyd Gaines (2014’s “Driving Miss Daisy”) as Mr. Barbour.
The behind-the-scenes creative team included Oscar-winning director of photography Roger Deakins (“Blade Runner 2049”), Oscar-nominated production designer K.K. Barrett (“Her”), editor Kelley Dixon (“Breaking Bad”), and costume designer Kasia Walicka Maimone (“Bridge of Spies”). The music is by Trevor Gureckis (“Bloodline”).

Can someone explain what’s it about?
it’s about this guy, theo, and he loses his mom in a bombing and takes this painting of a goldfinch. he ends up moving to las vegas with his dad yada yada yada. half of the book is about when he was 13-15 years old and the rest is when he’s older. it’s long and complicated that’s why i recommend reading the book then watching the movie. it’ll make a lot more sense.

Oscars 'Best Film' nominee predictions: The Goldfinch, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Ford Vs Ferrari, Jojo Rabbit, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Ad Astra, Us, The Farewell, Little Women, and Just Mercy.
Some wildcards that could be nominated instead (but I doubt it) include - Joker, Queen & Slim, Doctor Sleep, 1917, and Rocketman.
I loved Us, but It has been months since it was released that I doubt that it will be remembered by the Academy.

@@jake27990 Yes and the studio submits basically the 95% of their released movies. So basically it is a ration that doesn't change. It will be seen but it is still forgotten as the timing of the movie was off for awards season. But am saying that most of the movies that are coming between September and December are the ones to be most recognized by the academy, because of their popularity within the cinema industry. Plus you need to take into account critics that they also influence in the awards season (But in this case, it doesn't count as "Us" was well-received). It is not a fair game but chances are that if you release it in those months it will have higher opportunities to compete in the Awards Season. Just look at their awards track season, most of the films nominated were released between those months (There are exceptions obviously, and some are political reasons tbh, but you need to have a really good campaign, to still be remembered). If it goes well Us can be nominated but it will still be forgotten, but let's have hopes.
@@AndresGarciaMovies Again, not how it works at all. There is a limit for how many movies they can submit, they don't submit 95%, they choose a select handful. They also must include clips and highlight reels with each submission for the review board to watch and consider specifically so that no movie can be "forgotten". Movies don't get more noms because they're released Sep-Dec, most Oscar-calibre movies are released in those months to avoid the blockbuster season. They then get noms but it's not why they're released in those months or why they get noms. You're talking shit.

One of my favourite books I have ever read so far of my book reading discovery. First got into this medium October time last year and I really loved this book. So beautiful and gorgeous and loved Boris and Theo's relationship especially with regards to when they have that hilarious fight in the pool. That made me laugh

@@OhSmexyGirlfriend Thanks Isabel. I am already 3 through my challenge of 50 books for this year (some overlapped from last year into this year however but still count). I have just purchased the little friend and loved it. I wish more people discovered books and just read instead of wasting away days and hours of their lives on their phone. I have learnt new grammatical words,learnt how to structure stuff better and be more literate. Also,if you look at the many benefits online, your brain power increases creativity and ability to retain info hence why this is a beneficial but fun medium of entertainment.
Sam Power That's absolutely right! Especially for young people, while the brain is still developing. It will improve your speech and ultimately social skills - this is the type of thing that could help with getting a job, in the long run. Reading also fosters empathy, thereby creating more compassionate people, because you're literally experiencing someone else's life and the emotions that they're feeling (even if it's fiction). It's a truly wonderful thing you're doing for yourself!

I love reading. Just evaluated my life and one day I came back from a trip away at sea and said since I have 10 pounds or so to rekindle what I lost during former years. I did my college course (UK) and I got so many great results and I could remember things instantly almost without looking in an encyclopedic way.
Lots of people on the courses just don't read and I know I cannot change people and their lifestyles but it's a matter of stepping out of your comfort zone and just trying it. Reading has been so moving and powerful, particularly the goldfinch.
Books are so powerful and I will keep on reading every day as it's my passion and I have lost interest in videogames and used to be addicted but now I have discovered the outside world a lot more and admired it through beauty in the books.

I mean, no one has ever said such a thing to me, but I know that there are people out there who are somehow proud of their own ignorance. Anyway, I love hearing about a person's newly discovered joy for reading, it's great. When people _don't_ enjoy books, that's boring. Be proud and don't give up!
