From Oscar-winning director Robert Zemeckis (โForrest Gumpโ) comes the fantasy adventure โRoald Dahlโs The Witches.โ The film stars Oscar winners Anne Hathaway (โLes Misรฉrable,โ โOceanโs 8โ) and Octavia Spencer (โThe Help,โ โThe Shape of Waterโ), Oscar nominee Stanley Tucci (โThe Hunger Gamesโ films, โThe Lovely Bonesโ), with Kristin Chenoweth (TVโs โGleeโ and โBoJack Horsemanโ) and award-winning comedy legend Chris Rock. Newcomer Jahzir Kadeem Bruno (TVโs โAtlantaโ) also stars, alongside Codie-Lei Eastick (โHolmes & Watsonโ).
Reimagining Dahlโs beloved story for a modern audience, Zemeckisโs visually innovative film tells the darkly humorous and heartwarming tale of a young orphaned boy (Bruno) who, in late 1967, goes to live with his loving Grandma (Spencer) in the rural Alabama town of Demopolis. As the boy and his grandmother encounter some deceptively glamorous but thoroughly diabolical witches, she wisely whisks our young hero away to an opulent seaside resort. Regrettably, they arrive at precisely the same time that the worldโs Grand High Witch (Hathaway) has gathered her fellow cronies from around the globe-undercover-to carry out her nefarious plans.
Based on the book by Roald Dahl, the screenplay is by Robert Zemeckis & Kenya Barris (TVโs โblack-ish,โ โShaftโ) and Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro (โThe Shape of Waterโ). Zemeckis is also producing, alongside Jack Rapke, del Toro, Alfonso Cuarรณn and Luke Kelly. Serving as executive producers are Jacqueline Levine, Marianne Jenkins, Michael Siegel, Gideon Simeloff and Cate Adams.
Zemeckisโs behind-the-scenes team includes a roster of his frequent collaborators, including Oscar-nominated director of photography Don Burgess (โForrest Gumpโ), production designer Gary Freeman, editors Jeremiah OโDriscoll and Ryan Chan, Oscar-nominated costume designer Joanna Johnston (โAllied,โ โLincolnโ), and Oscar-nominated composer Alan Silvestri (โPolar Express,โ โForrest Gumpโ).

No disrespect to Anne Hathaway because she did a great job, but I would have loved to see Helena Bonham Carter as the Grand High Witch - she does eccentric and villainous characters so incredibly well.
Yeah, she wouldve great!
@Captain Obvious How about someone with TALENT instead of someone famous??
Anything narrated by Chris Rock is not a movie that would fit Helena. They could of made this much darker but itโs not dark enough for those kind of character performances.
My oppinion as a cineast for over 50 years. Seen them all from Gish Garbo Davies to todays actresses. You need the skill of staracting like Emma Stone in Cruella. Anne Hathaway has her talent in character acting. Meryl Streep would not have been good but Glenn Close. In death becomes her Goldie Hawn was the better actress. Octavia Spencer would have been a better choice for Anne Hathaways part. She can do all from horror to comedy.

Agree
Anne Hathaways opinion on abortion being merciful somehow makes so much more sense now.
I don't think Dahl would approve this.
*This is exactly why the Goosebumps (2015) failed: no respect of the material, treating the audience like infants and removing dark tonality - not every child escapes nor has a happy ending, which is what the original Goosebumps and Are You Afraid of the Dark understood! Roald Dahl's The Witches is a dark tale, and so was Nicolas Roeg's 1990 adaption, though Dahl had issues with the ending - for obvious reasons that he believed it was too optimistic and betrayed his ending. Does anyone else recall the haunting portrait scene with Erica? I very much doubt there'll be a single scene in this film that'll equal the bone-chilling and utter cold nature of that one scene - and there was not one drop of blood or CGI in that scene ~ All the CGI in the world can't surpass a great script and great directing ~ Another example of this would be the first Men In Black: a rather dark film - and I'm utterly surprised it even got a PG-13 rating, due to the Bug scenes; the sequels ended up being utter comedies with no suspense, and no stakes ... This is another reason why many prefer Stephen King's IT minseries over the two recent IT films - the former being a very dark adaption instead of the Stranger Things' vibe ~*
I heard that Ghostbusters Afterlife will have some genuinely scary moments despite it being a comedy. And Sony Television's making an upcoming reboot of the Goosebumps TV show and hopefully will be a full blown horror show like the original.
Also, the Goosebumps movie wasn't that bad in my eyes.
I've got a feeling 1:09 is the Erica story. But i doubt it will compare to the literal child snatching of the original and the Father's face seeing his daughter locked in the painting.
i was with you until the unironic 1990 IT miniseries praise.
that's just 3 hours and 12 minutes of Tim Curry mugging while grown adults fondle and massage each other.

I know a witch. My mother in law.She flys in from the east every summer on her broomstick.
A remake that nobody asked for, a remake that we didn't need. Just watch the original FFS.
Exactly. I canโt wait for this remake phase in Hollywood to finally be over!
0:56 They need to tighten up that CGI, that cat looks like its just copy/pasted on her arm.
1:25 looks the worst
@@seb6220 Yeah, this isn't gonna get great reviews.
Comparing to the original this is nothing.
LOVED this movie!!! was actually a great movie to watch after soooo long! definitely recommend !
I know right
@@Sadakoyammamura2000 there will always be people with bad taste
I know, the movie may not be as good as the first, but itโs Deff a solid 8-9/10!
Not me. Regret buying it, now.
@@carolijn8958 itโs not bad taste, itโs preference & opinions. & neither one is bad.
Not a fan of the American setting or jokier tone to this. Even the book gave me nightmares, this could never
I agree, thatโs what stands out about the book and the old movie that it scares you as a child that was the point the witches were very menacing and now they have Anne Hathaway, why Anne Hathaway but the whole thing looks goofy
Agreed. And what's with them using a 3rd kid now since this seems to be a repeat of the original?
๐ฌ๐ง๐ฌ๐ง๐ฌ๐งBritain
Right, this is a Roald Dahl book, leave it British ffs. The original film was so creepy
When I was a child, what scared me were films like Poltergeist and The Exorcist. The Witches is almost like Gremlins. It has terror that is very cartoonish, like a fairy tale. Perhaps this new version is more fun for children to watch. And if you want them to be afraid, put some horror movie on for them to watch.
Anne Hathaway trying to be scarier than Anjelica Huston?? They could have chosen a much more intimidating woman. The original movie had much creepier vibes.
Even bad Russian accent doesn't help that, she's no witch!
You do know it is a book, right? The book isn't scary. It's mostly silly.
@@manjaridd108 she's supposed to have a bad accent. It's in the book. I literally read it last week. It's not Russian, but it is very bad and funny in the book.
@Shane Get over yourself you xenophobic asshat. Your problem is clearly with Americans and nothing else. The book is not scary. If it terrified children like you claim then it wouldn't continue to be a popular children's book. You should read it to a child or ask a child about it. I literally studied children's lit in uni. This is not a scary story. Jeez.
The original scared the crap out of me as a child and itโs still super creepy and Iโm 36 now!!!!
I read the book when I was like 10-11 years old, like... 17-18 years ago lmao, i'm 28 at the moment and I loveeed the book and the classic old movie, i need to watch this one now :)
I read the book around the same age but I'm 35 now lol
Wait until you're both my age and movies you loved at your current ages are referred to as "classic old movies"๐.
All praise to Balaam.
Looks good, but those witches are not scary at all. the old one literally gave mi nightmares
Cause your a kid back then and your not scared now cause your old duh
@@jlguillermo4902 more because special effects are not scary at all, costumes are
@@JamesHussain82 yeah for us old enough but for children nowadays I dont think so.
Also Anne Hathaway is always stunning even when sheโs bald
Lol it's not scary it's just too funny for me
Anne Hathaway character is looking like Maleficent.
Rats remind me of Ratatouille and Peter pettigrew of Harry Potter. ๐ ๐
Anne Hathaway looks like lady gaga
she is sooo ugly omfg
I think Anjelica Huston and Mai Zetterling did such a phenomenal job in the original, the actors playing their roles in the remake were always going to fall short.
I remember reading this book in school like 3 years ago lmao
Erm... donโt fix something that ainโt broken
The original was broken
Said Hollywood....NEVER๐
Sherman Brown oi oi think we got a 6 year old here
Exactly, the original is much better.
it was not what the author of the book said.
I wish it was a toucH darker. kids from the 80s 90s and even 2000s had โspookyโ media that was family friendly but could also feel really dark (the og witches, goosebumps, courage the cowardly dog, coraline) but filmmakers are afraid of making scary things for kids recently. They play it too safe imo.
overall i think kids will still like it and the actors look like theyโre having a great time iโll give it a chance...
Because nowadays you need to be careful as everyone gets offended way to easily over anything. Back then they didnโt
While I agree with the OP, it's worth bearing in mind the new Sabrina. That's a masterpiece of turning a family friendly kids show of the 90s into something much darker and scarier. Well, scary for children, at least.
Not sure why they would even try to remake this movie. The original Witches was downright freaky and disturbing.
To make it black
@@daftwod Or to make the ending of it unhappy, which is precisely why I wanted this movie to exist.
@@TheNotverysocial You probably never read the book
@@daftwod I did. And it is the one thing this movie did right when all else was wrong. The 1990 film is not perfect. I love everything up to the sudden reformation of one of them. Omit that and it'd be the best version of this.
@@daftwod I don't think you did ? that is how it ends in the book
I'm just her for momo thank you MoMoring to your recommendation in the perfect time ๐ ๐
The story is meant to be creepy and scary, not cheap laughs and high jinks, can't y'all just remake the films that were actually bad and make them good? Not just remake good films with grainy picture, with the same disney-esque formula so we don't actually fear for the characters?
Maybe wait for the movie before judging it by a trailer?
The "original movie" was the version the author hated because they changed the ending to make it more "family friendly", so if in this version they keep the book ending the same, I'll appreciate it.
โ@Epicthomas 2000 It follows that you never read the book. It's dark fantasy with horror overtones to scare children. In fact, the same author complained about the old movie ending for being too happy. If a book is for children does not mean that it is excluded from being scary, dude. Have you not read in your childhood or what?
@Epicthomas 2000 This is version nothing like the book. The original was.
@@jacksnstaffs8293 how do you know? The movie is not even out yet.
Octavia Spenser doesnโt even look old enough to be a grandma.
You right she looks like she going to miss Milly house to make a pie
She's only 48? Depending on when you have kids, 48 can be a grandma
Teen pregnancy my dude.
My grandma was 42 when I was born - and it would have been particularly common to be a grandma in your 40s during the 1960s when this adaptation takes place. It tracks! Octavia Spencer is just aging really beautifully.
Black women really dont age, most of them already in their 60's yet they look like in their 40's.
NOBODY can replace Angelica Houston as Grand High Witch. Nobody.
Black people cant replace whites
Finally we have Ann Hathaway with no makeup during the whole movie. That's brave LOL
but she does have makeup..?
ooooop-
