Back in high school, Jack Cunningham (Ben Affleck) had everything going for him. A basketball phenom, he could have punched his ticket to college or even the pros, but, instead, he chose to walk away from the game, forfeiting his future.
Jack’s glory days are long gone…but, as it turns out, not forgotten. Years later, he gets the chance to take back his life when he is asked to coach the struggling basketball team at his alma mater. Jack reluctantly accepts, surprising no one more than himself, and as the boys start to come together as a team and win, Jack may get his last shot at redemption.
Academy Award winner Ben Affleck (“Argo,” “The Accountant”) stars in “The Way Back,” directed by Gavin O’Connor (“The Accountant,” “Warrior”).
Gordon Gray, Jennifer Todd, Gavin O’Connor and Ravi Mehta produced the film, written by Brad Ingelsby. Robert J. Dohrmann, Brad Ingelsby, Kevin McCormick, Mark Ciardi, Aaron L. Gilbert, Jason Cloth, and Madison Ainley served as executive producers.
“The Way Back” also stars Al Madrigal (“Night School”), Michaela Watkins (TV’s “Casual”), Janina Gavankar (TV’s “True Blood”), Glynn Turman (“Bumblebee”), Brandon Wilson, Will Ropp, Charles Lott Jr. and Melvin Gregg.
O’Connor’s behind-the-scenes creative team included director of photography Eduard Grau, production designer Keith P. Cunningham, editor David Rosenbloom, and costume designer Cindy Evans. The music is by composer Rob Simonsen.

This seems like it will be therapeutic for Ben considering his own struggle with alcoholism. I admire actors who put themselves out there like this who know they will be torn apart and judged (playing it too close to real life; Not stretching enough; Wanting sympathy, etc). However, there comes a point in recovery when it's not about them, though, and more about wanting to help & inspire others who may be struggling with the same thing. The story and themes may be cliche, but they're cliche for a reason: Life is often a repeated series of mistakes and redemption.

Basketball is just an excuse to tell a serious, hard, humanely beautiful story... Affleck is incredible, every character is very well portrayed (only felt that the guy that helps Affleck's get home character needed more story but the mystery felt wonderful too (tryin not to spoil anything) every actor makes the movie alive, making the watcher completely immersed. Loved it from beginning to end. Loved the stilness of the movies photography, and the soundtrack grabs you by the neck when you feel you need to cry... must watch for me. One of the best from Affleck and im not even a "die hard fan". Hoped to see a "Coach Carter" type of movie, ended up being very satisfied in every single act. Thank you to everyone involved in this movie. Loved it.

This is a movie, but this is my life. Hockey star, had the option to play division 1 hockey east, realized my dad was only supporting me because it reflected well on him. If i had a bad game it was the end of the world, if I had a good game he would be the happiest person and talking to everyone because of me. Once I realized this i began self sabotage just like this guy in the movie. 6 years later, drug addict and porn addict, realizing this is what Ive done but not knowing the whole time. This may be a movie, but this struck home for me as this is my life. Just wanted this off my chest because my family is not willing to listen. Thanks anyone for support.

Filmologia sadly a “NO” cause the Academy usually looks at those films which are released post September and therefore it’s gonna be difficult for Ben Affleck as well as Christopher Nolan whose film “Tenet” is coming out in June/July. As much as I want these two to be nominated next year, it’s highly unlikely.

Same goes for Nolan too, he was overlooked as the Best Director. Nolan doesn’t deserve an Oscar, it’s the Oscar who deserves Nolan.

I remember seeing this and as a guy at the time struggling with alcohol addiction I knew I had to see it. It was an emotional rollercoaster but it was a good one. If you haven’t seen it yet go see it immediately.

I just came back from seeing this movie and I have to say that I was very impressed with how it tuned out. It has an incredible story as it’s not just another sports movie it’s more than that, It’s also a story about facing your inner demons and as the title says: “Finding your way back.” To get back to a place in your life that you were at peace, when you were happy. I also think that Ben Affleck killed it in this movie, As I was able to see a real world connection between the role he played and how he is in real life.
The Final score for this movie is a: 9/10! A great movie with an extremely powerful message. I highly recommend you check this movie out if you haven’t done so already.
