They said I couldn't build a 1970 Dodge Charger Chassis | 03.1

  • Seriously. I was told early in this process, "no way you can build your own frame." Well, with some friends, we did just that and built a frame for my 1970 Dodge Charger.
    If you’re building your hotrod by yourself, you might be doing it wrong. Cars are connectors of people, and give us the chance - sometimes a fleeting one - to get to know and work with some really good folks. With that in mind, we set off to assemble the Willomet Charger’s new custom 4x2 frame with the help from some of friends. Stick around, and enjoy part 1, where the frame I designed starts to take shape.

    To hijack a quote on design from Joe Sparano "Good design is obvious. Great design is transparent.", your design for a frame is crystal clear. All of what you need and none that you don't. Truly a foundation for a badass car coming into focus. Your videos document it all so well. Great Work dude!

    Dude your improvement is not a mile better each video. It's a hundred mile better. The only thing missing is just weekly uploads. This channel is becoming slowly but surely one of the top 10 auto channels.

      @WillometMotorFab  3 년 전 +1

      Thanks man. It's a lot of fun learning and crafting my style. I doubt I'll do weekly uploads anywhere in the near future - it's just not feasible with the other commitments in my life and still be able to maintain a level of quality I'm satisfied with. As I get good content together, it will come out, and I'm glad you're here to enjoy it.

    Hi David! I just found and subscribed to your channel. You do GREAT WORK, and I'll look forward to watching more of your work. You did hurt my feelings though...your first "shop tip" was to GET ORGANIZED! Alas, that may be my biggest challenge, but I'm trying. At some point you'll need to come up to Denton and visit. I'll show you what 300 years worth of projects look like!
    Highest regards,
    Tom

      Man, getting/staying organized is a stuggle. I literally just got done reorganizing some areas of the shop post-engine build, and it felt good to shed a bunch of scrap and cardboard. I like to start and end each day sweeping the floor. It feels good and is quick and easy progress. Keep at it!

      You should! A new frame is the only way (I think) to guarantee you have a solid foundation for a well handling machine.

    I know this video is 2yrs old, but wanted to ask you your opinion. I have a 1969 stingray convertible (not numbers matching) that appears to have been in and accident with a bend on the right side chassis and some cracks where the motor mounts are.
    My options are to find a 69 chassis and upgrade the suspension to a Detroit speed suspension or have new chassis fabricated with new suspension. New big block 540 with 650 lbs of torque. What do you think is the best option?
    Thank you!

    • @WillometMotorFab
      @WillometMotorFab  년 전 +1

      It’s hard to beat the value of the chassis options out there now, and it bells get your project running a lot quicker, too. Unless you’re moving the powertrain or suspension locations, I would recommend buying a chassis before building one. But don’t get me wrong, it’s a lot of fun to build your own rails.

      That’s bend tech pro, and I used the sheet metal module. Thanks!

    would cuts work instead of bends?

    • @WillometMotorFab
      @WillometMotorFab  11 개월 전

      Sure would. I just didn’t want to put a bunch of heat into the rails, as it creates an opportunity for deformation from weld shrinkage. Perfectly valid method though.

    I saw in 1st video you measured key points off the car, and you're building the frame to match. The frame looks dead-nuts level and square, but surely the car is not. How will you resolve those differences?

    • @WillometMotorFab
      @WillometMotorFab  3 년 전

      The body conforms to the frame. With the unibody entirely cut out, it was squarewithin a 1/2”, and about the same variance for level. That wasn’t a huge tweak to work out.
