To Peira water is a molecule. A molecule is the organization of atoms. Like H2O (dihydrogen monoxide). There are 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom. Or let’s go with another example. Table Salt (sodium chloride). 1 sodium atom and 1 chlorine atom. There is one other thing. Water is not wet by itself. But for example if you put a piece of paper towel in water. What does it do. It wets the entire paper towel. I was just trying to clarify what I was saying

As a kid you never see this straight up savage side of Bill, it's awesome though. He's just become that much more relatable as I've grown up. Then again some of these questions are pretty comedic. But it's still people wanting to learn, so for that I'm glad they're asking Bill.

Seeing Bill Nye super happy and genuinely stoked about science has officially made all of my days.
Bill Nye is a national treasure that we need to protect at all cost. His love for life is apparent and science brings him joy. I love the fact that though these questions appear dumb he tries his best to explain it with a sense even though snarky, it's not belittling and he finds something intriguing to build on anyways. Love this guy.

The facial expressions and body language they would make would make it easy to tell. (For example if I’m smiling I know I’m the reflection that is smiling).
It makes me think of the College Humor "If Google was a Guy". There's the one guy who asks questions like "BABY OIL MADE OF BABIES?!" and the Google guy is like, "you know that it's not".
the positivity that radiates off of this man is just wonderful. i grew up watching his teachings as a child..just one of the people i really hope just lives forever.
The way I see the “is water wet” debate is this. Wetness as we think of it in laymen’s terms is a measure of how much water a traditionally dry object contains (I.E. a wet napkin has observed water). With this in mind, if you graph the level of wetness of objects as you add water, you will notice an asymptotic curve form because there is no percentage of pure water that does not contain water. So water is not wet due to the nature of asymptotes. You can come infinitely close to being water and still being wet, but the moment you make something pure water - the moment you cross that asymptotic threshold - you are no longer wet.

You still can’t deny that global warming is happening, and will only speed up if we don’t at least try to control it.
The best way we know of to reduce carbon emissions is with new and better technology, that’s why the US is the leading country in carbon emissions by far. Also scientists don’t even call it global warming anymore, they call it climate change because they realized that the warming they predicted and still do never really changed much. Many of the studies scientists use as evidence for climate change are heavily flawed and poorly peer reviewed. Not to mention that there are tens of thousands of scientists out there who have serious evidence to say that climate change just flat out doesn’t exist or that and increase in CO2 won’t be harmful at all, maybe even better. The climate is very hard to predict, that’s why these scientists have been wrong for the past 40 years, but people still believe them for some reason.

I remember a teacher laughing at me for saying I saw lightning one winter when it was snowing. I remember being shocked that because of her not knowing about the phenomena she was willing to ridicule me
Tamas Egyed Well, curse your previous teacher. No teacher or person of education should mock the younger generation for something such as a phenomena. Even if they didn't know what it was, they should've swallowed their pride and admit they didnt know or in fact use it as a lesson and actually research the reasoning behind it. It is unfortunate that you aren't the first person I have heard that has experienced this type of situation

+Joel - Mostly the conditions to produce lightning don't exist during colder weather. BUT, there are circumstances that can produce lightning then too. I have seen lightning in the winter as well. I have also experienced an enormous hailstorm in January when the conditions to produce that rarely exist at that season where I live. Instead of 6 inches of snow... it was six inches of little ice balls and that is WORSE for driving in.

I love this man. 🥰 as a millennial I grew up watching and loving his show as a kid, and he's just amazing. He inspires a love of science, encourages us all to think and ask questions, and has spent his career educating us without being dismissive or talking down to us. And the best part? He shows how fun and interesting science is! We are lucky to have him!
This is how I always approach the “is water wet?” question.
Take fire, okay. Fire itself is not burning- that is to say, fire does not react to itself by being burnt. It just creates more fire, which is not the state of being burnt. The state of being burnt is being reduced to ashes, giving off carcinogens, etc etc.
Same idea with water.
Another good analogy is dirt- dirt itself cannot be ‘dirty’ because it is the dirt.
It is the catalyst that creates the effect, and it cannot create the same effect upon itself because that effect is cancelled out by just being what it is.
Water is not wet.

- Traits vary among the population
- Those differences are genetically heritable
- Some of those differences make individuals fitter than others.
In the case of the missing toenail the first is obviously true and possibly caused by the second. Nye’s answer covers the third: if OP isn’t any better or worse off, this particular difference probably won’t drive evolution.

Imagine believing that a degree gives you qualifications to speak intelligently about something. Even if he were a fraud, he still taught kids about the world around them, which is more than you’ll ever do in your pathetic life.
I suppose the semantic issue behind "is water wet" is interpreting "wet" as "laced with water" which water obviously isn't because it _is_ water. But the fluid dynamics definition applies there too: Water sticks to the surface of water, therefore water is wet.
I was thinking the opposite. Take two half glasses of water and pour them together, they become one glass. So my thinking was water wouldn't be wet (by fluid dynamics) because it's not one thing sticking to another. Does that make sense?
