I think the line transcends more than just a monetary situation.
Creative freedom: Wayne was held back from releasing albums from Birdman. Someone more knowledgeable, feel free to elaborate.
Emotional Instability: Wayne and Birdman constantly referenced each other like father and son. They were so close at one point they pop kissed. With their relationship, Wayne needed a fatherly figure (as we all do), while Birdman needed to secure his paycheck.
