In the early hours of Tuesday, March 26, a container ship struck a support on Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing the bridge to collapse into the river.
Was wondering this. I forgot the captains name, but I was having a really hard time finding it yesterday. Could only find one of his names, but not his whole name. Wasn't sure if it was his first or last name. They said he was a Ukraine citizen.

Why wasnt the ship steering toward the center of the channel? ie. THE < CENTER SPAN > OF THE BRIDGE - and widest space between support columns. (In earlier news this AM, it was stated that the ship lost power and was restarted twice.) The second restart was too late. During both power losses the ship drifted to port, because current flow out of the Patapsco River is going to push the ship that direction - AND they drifted - into that support!!!
The path of the ship appeared more parallel to the bridge until it suddenly went full throttle exhaust/smoke blast and rapidly steered directly into the bridge support. Was power on ship turned off intentionally? The plot of the path in the news does not match that of the video view from side opposite of impact.
The ship suffered catastrophic failures and it was built by none other than Hyundai. No surprises, korean cars are garbage and so are their ships!!!!!!

I was just reading that many ships don't want to pay for them anymore because of the cost has risen so high & it impacts their prices of their goods too.
Do you seriously think the licensed pilot at the helm didn't drop anchor? Your nautical experience must be limited to renting a jet ski at a beach in Florida for 20 minutes one spring break.
I think huge reefer containers were loaded and those drawing tremendous amount of power. Hence, not sufficient amount of actual power available for ship's maneuvering. Crash astern means, bow cants to starboard. Ship was swing to starboard as soon as stern propulsion was maneuvered. It resulted bow to drift towards the pillar and out of center channel. Anchoring will not be effective for this size of the vessel at that speed. Neither, bow thrusters would be available due to lack of power. After all, bow thrusters are mostly ineffective above 4/5 knots. Remedial action could had been made to maintain steering with the help of emergency generator and cut off all deck power for huge reefer containers immediately. Restore power back for ship's maneuvering only with two minutes or so. Cool down! And think! Good luck to all . My prayers are with all casualties and losses.
For anyone reading this, crash astern means to reverse the propeller and therefore thrust in the reverse direction. It has nothing to do with starboard. It is an emergency stopping procedure. It is the only real brakes the ship has. In this case, if the ship was going off course, there was no steering it back on course (it's too big and slow) and it was moving too fast for bow thrusters to be effective in changing the ships course, thus the order to crash astern would make a ton of sense, slow the ship down and either use bow thrusters to change course or hopefully stop the ship before it hit the bridge.

That's a toll bridge, and can be shut down at the toll booths, which apparently happened. Other reports say the ship notified authorities that they were out of control, very close to the bridge.
How soon did they notify. On the live cam even when the ship went dark there were cars driving in both directions and even just a few seconds before impact.
Police chief said they were able to recieve the may day call in time to shut down the bridge for traffic Those on the bridge were actually state workers doing work on the bridge.

I had looked it up on my 2009 truckers road atlas, and it was listed as a toll bridge there, but I couldn't recall a booth eastbound. My phone is android, and my first computer was in 2014, so never had dialup, your concern is touching, but I'm OK.
this is an incomplete analysis. the AIS tracking data is available and shows clearly what happened. She lost power, dropped a port bow anchor, and threw it in reverse, and the stern walked to port and the bow swung starboard. The anchor did not work
Don't let looks deceive you. I rode over that bridge many times, it was sturdy. But you have a ship which weighs tons, hit a support beam, it's going to knock the bridge down...
Completely preventable if tugs were mandated to stay with ship till past this very important bridge. Two tugs guided it from loading dock to channel then left the ship on it's own. This was a tragedy waiting to happen.
I am a retired mariner served around 38 years in merchant navy. As this Captain says generators were failed just at the critical time. Emergency generators comes with in a minute but may not full ship 's electrical load. Even though there is a black out the main engine may be running till it is stopped. Also it may take a few minutes even the emergency stop switch activated. Many shipping companies, don't want to hire tugs for longer duration to save money. The port state control should insists that a pilot and tugs services to be used for longer duration depending on the port conditions.

8 Knots is way too fast approaching a bridge! I do not believe they were going eight knots. When they went full astern, the propeller pulled the ship to the starboard side of the channel and directly into the pier.

It was Electrical power black out occured just before the accident. Even if ship crew tried hard crash astern movement. It is very difficult to stop its forward movement due to the ship's huge mass and river water current/wind force.
Living in a society already comfortable with being on HD CCTV 24/7, I find it distressing that nobody knows how many are missing. If this happened in the UK, they'd have a report on how many cars, how many passengers, what speed they were doing, whether they have a television licence or are on a terrorism watchlist, and face recognition data for the driver and front passenger at a minimum... o.o

They were pretty sure they knew how many cars were on the bridge within 60 minutes of the collapse. The fire dept checked the security camera footage and announced there were 3 or 4 vehicles parked on the bridge that belonged to the construction crew. That's it. Police blocked both ends of the bridge 2 minutes before the ship hit. Nobody else was on the bridge.
As has been commented on elsewhere, it can been seen that the ship has 2 power outages. Following the first one smoke for the funnel can be seen. IF this is indicating that the ship was put into FULL reverse (which seems probable) then on a 'single screw' ship this will have an actual physical effect - namely that the ships stern will kick out to port, regardless of speed. This will effectively steer the ship's nose to starboard and towards the pillion, as depicted by the videos. Ships captains would be trained to anticipate this. So one has to wonder just what was going on on the bridge between the pilot and the captain.
Was there any mayday calls from the cargo ship ? What was the huge yellow light on ship 4 seconds before bridge starts to collapse? I’ve driven that bridge many years both car and Semi . Steel Trusses on that bridge. That was one strong bridge! Steel truss bridge just folded like a cheap card table just seems like the cargo ship with anchor dropped and capt would have slowed down trying to to stop turn ship ?
Yes, there were multiple radio calls from the ship. Those calls allowed time for the bridge to be blocked by police at both ends to get traffic off but there was not time to get the construction crew off. They dropped anchor and put it in full reverse but couldn't stop in time. The ship had multiple power failures preventing them from controlling the ship.
Ironically enough my understanding is that the ship radioed a Mayday and workers were in fact able to stop traffic on the bridge before the collision. The missing people appear to all be State Highway Department workers who were actually working on the bridge.
Look at all the protection barriers around the electrical towers but none for the Bridge supports??? Go look at bridges in South Korea and other area's. They have massive barriers all around there supports. Why doesn't this bridge have them???

They have tug boats to get the ship in the channel and underway. Once the ship is in the channel, it can navigate on its own. That channel is 160 miles long. You want multiple tugboats riding with every ship the whole way to and from the ocean?
He's not addressing the main issue. It is being reported that the power failure took out the steering. A captain could either confirm that as a possible or rule it out. He just talks around that and leaves us none the wiser. He seems to imply that somebody screwed up and the power failure could have been caused by them trying to recover from that mistake. Earlier coverage seems to assume that the ship was just going along when the power went out and jammed the steering.

The ship didn't hit the bridge because it was too high. The ship lost power and ran into and destroyed the pier holding the bridge up. It ought to be impossible for you not to know this, but here we are.

I know its the same thing in August 1, 2007, I -35W bridge collapse were 145 injured and 13 Killed. Im thinking gassit place snap 🫰 and I was on the bridge in August 1, 2007. I believe they mean the shock on engine after control was turned to full astern caused it to stall. Report is this full astern command was enacted again with same result.

The vehicles that were on the bridge belonged to the construction workers and were parked. The bridge was shut down. The cops blocked traffic just before the ship hit. There were no other cars on the bridge.
That us just one live cam angle. Interesting to see other live cam of the ship leaving port to ascertain exact start of malfunction. All the crew survived, and probably the reason why the FBI ruled out terrorist early after several hours of interrogation.

I don't get the ship was backing up. That ship was on a direct course just as the ship which came in prior as shown on the live cam which did not have a tugboat either. The Dali was preparing to leave the US shores.

How come in the US, the country of 1000000 regulations, we ended up with the major bridge that cannot handle collision with a regular maritime traffic? The WTC was built to withstand collision with the B-707 the biggest airliner of that time, before 9/11 it sounded like and overkill, but at the end it saved 1000's life. I think, the 100ft long concrete deflector would sufficient to steer ship away from column and/or absorb the hit.
There is no bridge on the planet that will survive an at speed collision with a 162,000 ton cargo ship. The ship weighs twice what the entire bridge weighs.

@@stargazer7644 You can check about bridge concrete dolphins and fenders. There is an ongoing discussion if such structures would prevent disaster. Most engineers think it would.... BTW Key Bridge has dolphins, they just badly located , so ship made around them. 500x100 ft concrete fender around piers would absolutely prevent collision, so it is all about cost/risk.

Yeah, it's clear this "captain" has never been in the Chesapeake Bay in his career.
I think huge reefer containers were loaded and those drawing tremendous amount of power. Hence, not sufficient amount of actual power available for ship's maneuvering.
Crash astern means, bow cants to starboard. Ship was swing to starboard as soon as stern propulsion was maneuvered. It resulted bow to drift towards the pillar and out of center channel.
Anchoring will not be effective for this size of the vessel at that speed. Neither, bow thrusters would be available due to lack of power. After all, bow thrusters are mostly ineffective above 4/5 knots.
Remedial action could had been made to maintain steering with the help of emergency generator and cut off all deck power for huge reefer containers immediately. Restore power back for ship's maneuvering only with two minutes or so.
Cool down! And think! Good luck to all . My prayers are with all casualties and losses.
For anyone reading this, crash astern means to reverse the propeller and therefore thrust in the reverse direction. It has nothing to do with starboard. It is an emergency stopping procedure. It is the only real brakes the ship has. In this case, if the ship was going off course, there was no steering it back on course (it's too big and slow) and it was moving too fast for bow thrusters to be effective in changing the ships course, thus the order to crash astern would make a ton of sense, slow the ship down and either use bow thrusters to change course or hopefully stop the ship before it hit the bridge.
Thank God it was not during rush hour! Praying for victims.

That's a toll bridge, and can be shut down at the toll booths, which apparently happened. Other reports say the ship notified authorities that they were out of control, very close to the bridge.

How soon did they notify. On the live cam even when the ship went dark there were cars driving in both directions and even just a few seconds before impact.

this is an incomplete analysis. the AIS tracking data is available and shows clearly what happened. She lost power, dropped a port bow anchor, and threw it in reverse, and the stern walked to port and the bow swung starboard. The anchor did not work

Completely preventable if tugs were mandated to stay with ship till past this very important bridge. Two tugs guided it from loading dock to channel then left the ship on it's own. This was a tragedy waiting to happen.
I am a retired mariner served around 38 years in merchant navy. As this Captain says generators were failed just at the critical time. Emergency generators comes with in a minute but may not full ship 's electrical load. Even though there is a black out the main engine may be running till it is stopped. Also it may take a few minutes even the emergency stop switch activated. Many shipping companies, don't want to hire tugs for longer duration to save money. The port state control should insists that a pilot and tugs services to be used for longer duration depending on the port conditions.

8 Knots is way too fast approaching a bridge! I do not believe they were going eight knots. When they went full astern, the propeller pulled the ship to the starboard side of the channel and directly into the pier.

It was Electrical power black out occured just before the accident. Even if ship crew tried hard crash astern movement. It is very difficult to stop its forward movement due to the ship's huge mass and river water current/wind force.

Living in a society already comfortable with being on HD CCTV 24/7, I find it distressing that nobody knows how many are missing. If this happened in the UK, they'd have a report on how many cars, how many passengers, what speed they were doing, whether they have a television licence or are on a terrorism watchlist, and face recognition data for the driver and front passenger at a minimum... o.o
They said on another report that there were vehicles in the water, including a cement truck. Not sure how accurate that was.
Other news story said 6 vehicles went into the water , one critical injury sent to hospital, one denied treatment and walked away.

They were pretty sure they knew how many cars were on the bridge within 60 minutes of the collapse. The fire dept checked the security camera footage and announced there were 3 or 4 vehicles parked on the bridge that belonged to the construction crew. That's it. Police blocked both ends of the bridge 2 minutes before the ship hit. Nobody else was on the bridge.
As has been commented on elsewhere, it can been seen that the ship has 2 power outages. Following the first one smoke for the funnel can be seen. IF this is indicating that the ship was put into FULL reverse (which seems probable) then on a 'single screw' ship this will have an actual physical effect - namely that the ships stern will kick out to port, regardless of speed. This will effectively steer the ship's nose to starboard and towards the pillion, as depicted by the videos. Ships captains would be trained to anticipate this. So one has to wonder just what was going on on the bridge between the pilot and the captain.
Was there any mayday calls from the cargo ship ? What was the huge yellow light on ship 4 seconds before bridge starts to collapse? I’ve driven that bridge many years both car and Semi . Steel Trusses on that bridge. That was one strong bridge! Steel truss bridge just folded like a cheap card table just seems like the cargo ship with anchor dropped and capt would have slowed down trying to to stop turn ship ?
Yes, there were multiple radio calls from the ship. Those calls allowed time for the bridge to be blocked by police at both ends to get traffic off but there was not time to get the construction crew off. They dropped anchor and put it in full reverse but couldn't stop in time. The ship had multiple power failures preventing them from controlling the ship.
Wow this is sad and tragic..., we use tug boats to guide vessels up the river at the Georgia ports..., all the way up the river..

Ironically enough my understanding is that the ship radioed a Mayday and workers were in fact able to stop traffic on the bridge before the collision. The missing people appear to all be State Highway Department workers who were actually working on the bridge.

They have tug boats to get the ship in the channel and underway. Once the ship is in the channel, it can navigate on its own. That channel is 160 miles long. You want multiple tugboats riding with every ship the whole way to and from the ocean?
What is this blackout test the captain was speaking of?
He's not addressing the main issue. It is being reported that the power failure took out the steering. A captain could either confirm that as a possible or rule it out. He just talks around that and leaves us none the wiser. He seems to imply that somebody screwed up and the power failure could have been caused by them trying to recover from that mistake. Earlier coverage seems to assume that the ship was just going along when the power went out and jammed the steering.
If the screw isn't turning, the steering is out. The rudder is dependent on the screw. Not sure why this is even a question.

And offduty airport cop said i and Paula were the two worse injured badly that he took care of us.

I believe they mean the shock on engine after control was turned to full astern caused it to stall. Report is this full astern command was enacted again with same result.

Tugs escorting past the bridge will be the norm now. It makes so much sense now, but the cost/benefit before didn’t mandate it. Another case of saving a dime costing millions.

The vehicles that were on the bridge belonged to the construction workers and were parked. The bridge was shut down. The cops blocked traffic just before the ship hit. There were no other cars on the bridge.
If you look at the points where the bridge disconnects it straight up looks like planted charges exploding…

I don't get the ship was backing up. That ship was on a direct course just as the ship which came in prior as shown on the live cam which did not have a tugboat either. The Dali was preparing to leave the US shores.
It wouldn't make much difference if there were a dozen pilots if the ship lost power and steering.

How come in the US, the country of 1000000 regulations, we ended up with the major bridge that cannot handle collision with a regular maritime traffic? The WTC was built to withstand collision with the B-707 the biggest airliner of that time, before 9/11 it sounded like and overkill, but at the end it saved 1000's life.
I think, the 100ft long concrete deflector would sufficient to steer ship away from column and/or absorb the hit.
There is no bridge on the planet that will survive an at speed collision with a 162,000 ton cargo ship. The ship weighs twice what the entire bridge weighs.

You can check about bridge concrete dolphins and fenders. There is an ongoing discussion if such structures would prevent disaster. Most engineers think it would....
BTW Key Bridge has dolphins, they just badly located , so ship made around them.
500x100 ft concrete fender around piers would absolutely prevent collision, so it is all about cost/risk.
