The other day I went into a bunch of Chinese restaurants as an ordinary but kinda clueless white guy and ordered food in fluent Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese). It was a really fun prank and social experiment to see Chinese peopleβs reactions - both the waiters and the other patrons in these NYC Chinatown restaurants were totally shocked! This is like the nerd version of flexing your muscles at the beach.
Him being able to speak fluent Chinese is very impressive, but the amount of food he was able to eat is even more impressive.
This is a perfect example of why the perfect spy wouldn't be a hot guy in a suit but rather just an average looking bloke with resting tourist face.
I donβt know whatβs more impressive, the fact this guy speaks all of these different dialects so well, or how much this guy can eat!
You can really feel and see the appreciation by the elderly towards him being able to speak their language as a non-native.
"Your mandarin is better than my mandarin" - random chinese lady. The ultimate compliment to a linguistics nerd.

its crazy how something as simple as language can bring people together so easily. this makes me wanna learn a fluent second language
This is exactly like my British dad in the 1980s. He speaks a few languages fluently. Cantonese (my mum is chinese), Urdu, French and more. It was hilarious seeing the reactions of people. He had a lot of fun practising. As he says in the video, you have to keep speaking it or you'll forget.
