April Fool's! Teacher + students pull off the ultimate prank.

  • WARNING! A sense of humor is required for this video.
What happens when half the math class returns from a school trip? Well obviously, they get pranked by the remaining students and their teacher. What else could there be?
Remember that playing gags is an artform. It must be done with love in your heart. This scene taps into a universal fear we all share: the feeling of being completely and utterly lost, while EVERYONE around you totally understands.
Having said that, witnessing half the class slowly lose their marbles is straight-up HILARIOUS.
    And, YAY MATH!

It's a sign of a great teacher who can breed such participation in their classroom.

There were a few spots where he kind of realized that he was stuck and he was contradicting himself, but there were also spots where he actually fooled himself into believing some of the things could almost make sense.

I feel like when I was in high school, a lot of people would just say nothing and try to figure it out after class or suffer in silence rather than admit they don't understand in the middle of a class of their peers. The best part about creating a nonsensical mathematical problem, is that your brain tries to make it make as much sense as possible. The math was nonsense, but the story you started spinning around it tried to make sense of itself. It's impossible not to try to create order in the chaos. I figured I'd see where my mind takes me and go along with it to see if I can find the thought pattern.
The kids had a great attitude, but I think the first question I would have asked is "What are we trying to calculate?", unwittingly cutting the joke short. (I'm autistic, logical inconsistencies aside, I can't go along on someone else's logic journey if I don't know where we're going.)
The logical inconsistencies weren't difficult to identify. The relationship between two parallel lines is entirely static and doesn't require any complicated math to denote. Any perpendicular line between them has the same length. Furthermore, the slope of the line is arbitrary because it only has to intersect with 1 point. So I'd ask why you picked that angle.
If the formula for the line seems to be about y = -1,3x + 8; the line below it would be y = -1,3x + 7. The difference is the constant. Since the only difference between any of the lines is where they intersect the x-and-y-axis; there's not much of a deeper relationship to find there. It's a single changing integer.
Which is why during the explanation, you guys came up with the ƶ constant to make sense of what you were doing. The ƶ-constant represents m in y=mx+b. The constant between all the parallel lines.
By the way, if you created a Sigma function that takes two or more lines as input and outputs a line, it would be kinda proper math.
    Σ(y=3x+2, y=-1x+4) = (2y=2x+6) = (y=x+3)
Interestingly if you do this with two parallel lines you get this:
    Σ(y=3x+3, y=3x+4) = (2y=6x+7) = (y=3x+3,5) A parallel line exactly in between them, with the same "ƶ-constant". 😁
So you see, the math was nonsense, but the principle exists. If any of these kids ended up in a math-heavy college education, they might have run into Summation/Sigma Notation and Sigma Functions and have a good laugh remembering this April fools prank. I think it's a great example of how a mind occupied with logic cannot escape the desire to create order. To create a logical structure that fits the pattern. You're a great teacher for making math fun for the entire class.

    • @NLTops
      @NLTops 6 개월 전

The more I think about it the more real the math gets for me.
Let's say we take a point and a ƶ-constant (any of our choosing) and actually set a goal for ourselves.
Given line L (y=zx+b) intersecting with point A(2,4) and where z = -2, where does L intersect with the x-and-y-axis?
Well, we know that a line crosses the y-axis (b) when x is 0, and it crosses the x-axis when y is 0, and it will only ever not cross one of them if it is parallel to it.
If 4y=2x and y=-2x+b, it's a downward slope of -2 y per x. To find the intersection with the y-axis we must remove 2x (and thus add 4 y) to point A to find point B(0,8), which gives us the value for b, and the full formula of line L as y=-2x+8. Now we want y of 0 to find the x-axis intersection so we fill it out in the formula 0=-2x+8, which solves for x=4 (-2 * 4 + 8 = 0). So point C(4,0). Not that we really needed the formula. We could've done it the other way and found the intersection with the x-axis first, by removing 4y and adding 2x to point A.
But it's might be an interesting way to teach kids that you can find b in y=mx+b if given m and a point the line intersects with and thus figure out the entire formula from just that information. A point and a slope hold just as much information as the full formula of a line.

He got a couple minor details wrong like the equation for rise over run, but the overall concept of "sum" or sigma in math is still the same. It's used to find the area within a graph curve or can be altered to find the volume of an oddly shaped object. It can be applied in fields such as statistics or probability for protecting the future outlook of a certain industry or product, in architecture, civil and mechanical engineering, rocket science, and the like...
