English Teachers are STUNNED by Korea's SAT English Exam...

It's scary how thousands of students ace these exams but can't really utilize english properly. It's not even a language to them anymore, more of a systematic breakdown that's disguised as english.

Pun Jab I im a college graduate in the philippines and working here in US. We had 4 english subjects and its never been this hard.

It's more like teaching highschoolers how to use weird, obscure, rarely used but smart-sounding science jargon rather than how to interact with actual human beings. It's robotic and unnatural. I've met hella smart Koreans but only few of them can use English properly, if the tests are so hard that even native English speakers are having a hard time doing them, they should be geniuses lmao.

This is Patrick yesss I feel like schools should teach English that people would actually use and need if they were to visit an English speaking country and not make everything sound so robotic and intelligent. In reality, most English speakers use just easier and understandable words

Pun Jab I yeah that one is the exam. But to pass that exam, they need to learn right? Just imagine the time they had to learn, plus other subjects that they had to learn, versus the level they had to reach in that relatively short period of time. I'm pretty sure most of them would agree that it wasn't a fun learning experience.

@@cHiKa0o0 that's like learning how to run before u even learn to walk, it makes no sense. U gotta be able to master the basics & fundamentals of the language itself first. Comprehending thesis & dissertations is more of a skill (a high level one at that) rather than the study of the language itself. In most places, this skill is acquired AFTER you're in college, not a benchmark to get into one

@@cHiKa0o0 If the purpose of language studies is to learn a language and not many post-high school Koreans can hold a varied conversation in English, I'd say the curriculum failed.
The purpose of the test is quite stupid, why would you need to have the ability to analyse any sort of thesis without even having a solid grasp of the language itself.
Us students in Britain where English is our first language, only learn how to deconstruct difficult English passages at a later stage, perhaps around 17/18. I can't expect Koreans to be on that level if it isn't their first language.

And also even theses nowadays dont even use that many big words. My english and research teacher taught us to use easy to understand wordd and should not use big words if theres a simpler words that can be used. That kind of english should only be to student who want to specialize on english language or subject in my opinion.

@@johnnyjoestar7143 I have to disagree with you on some points. I've learned French as a 2nd language since kindergarten which I think is essentially how English is taught in Korea. In my country, when we're in our senior year, we have to read 3 books, deconstruct passages from them, answer some (admittedly far easier than the Korean SAT) questions, and write a short essay. I think it's unfair to judge language skills by conversation only. Most of the time, in jobs in my country, you'd need to write more than speak the language so more emphasis is put on that. Fluent conversation skills can also be acquired, for example we put more emphasis on that in my college than in high school because in my major it was deemed as needed.
I can't say that the majority in my country speak or even write well in French. But I'm sure almost no country can say that about any foreign language.

That's exactly what I was thinking. It takes some practice to read scientific journals, but not ten hours of study per day for years.
It feels like they take basic sentences, grab a thesaurus, and then substitute more obscure words for the common ones. Just...damn. I really feel for those kids.

Later down the line (cant remember what grade) I vividly remember having to write these weekly papers with a strict half-page limit (usually some proposed prompt / question that we had to agree/disagree/argue with). I can't even begin to imagine the nightmares that would cause for people in Korea if they grew up learning language like THAT.

(and for anyone that says that it sounds "easy", there's a few reasons why those short-prompts seemed quite difficult looking back, but basically tracks back down to "outgrowing habits" as well. While its true that "academic fluff" was indeed always discouraged; in the grades leading up to this we were taught a very ... structured (albeit basic) methodology of writing "effective paragraphs" (topic sentance, core argument/statement, 2-3x supportive evidence, concluding sentence) etc etc
But the whole point i believe was learning how to strip down and get to the core of your argument in a short amount of time (and that theres more than one way of wriying a paragraph lol)
- this was MANY years ago btw, so might be remembering wrong too lol

English gcses certainly don't have this, but i feel like the sentences are unnecessarily convoluted and while you are rewarded for accessing a higher range of vocabulary it would be viewed as excessive if used like the examples in this vid.

That's sorta what I was trying to point out in my comments. It tests university level comprehension skills. I can comprehend Spanish fine but were to ask me to speak it as my second language I sound like there's mashed potatoes in my mouth. I'll conjugate verbs wrong, mix up similar words, and make an utter fool of myself. Comprehension does not equal language mastery, unfortunately.

​@@OimkThat's pretty silly then. Most major books in English literature that one might read at a university level are not written with the kind of fluffy, bombastic phrasing that the Korean English test seems to use.
The test is likely written by people who have never been to an English-speaking country or even stepped outside of Korea, and it shows. The test questions read like what a non-native English speaker thinks elevated English sounds like - high-sounding and verbose, but lacking clarity.
There's really no value in training students to parse through obscurantist language like that, especially if they can't even master basic written and verbal English. Both the content of the test and the rationale behind it are deeply flawed.

@@soullessangel207 its because its not mandatory for us to take it all our life- only from grades 4 to 9. I chose to continue to take it, and there's kids in my class that are pretty much fluent because of earlier exposure and french immersion programs. But most people drop french in grade 9 and forget everything.

기억은 반복의 문제이지 주입식 교육의 문제가 아닙니다. 자기주도 학습과 주입식 교육의 차이는 학생들이 스스로 찾아서 공부하려 하느냐 아니냐일 뿐이에요.
사람들이 착각하는게 주입식 교육으로는 활용하는 유형의 문제를 풀지 못할거라 생각하는 건데, 실제로는 활용이라 해봤자 기본에서 약간 비틀고, 또 거기서 꼬아버리고 그걸 뒤섞는 과정의 반복이기 때문에 오히려 주입식 교육으로 개념들을 우겨넣고 문제풀이를 반복하면서 익혀나가는게 문제해결력을 더 높일 수 있습니다. 이는 독일 사관학교에서도, 현행 중-고등교육 수학과정에서도 찾아볼 수 있는 사례죠.

수능이 주입식이라는 분들은 졸업년도 여쭤봐야함 수능이 아니라 학력고사일 확률이 높음..

The main reason why exams are like this in Korea is because there are a lot kids who want to go to a top university. They purposely make it difficult and confusing (but technically grammatically correct) in order to distinguish students who are ''better'' in English. It is literally an English puzzle. If the English exam was normal, there would be so many students who ace the test and it would be difficult to know who is ''better''.

@@simdawn633 정말 영어 뿐만아니라 모든게.. 그 학창시절 긴 시간동안 흥미와도 전혀 상관없고, 인성과도 상관없는 교과목을 배우며 시간을 다 날려먹게 만들고, 그만큼 시간 투자를 하더라도 상위 몇퍼센트에 들지 않으면 무용지물로 만들어버리는.. 결국 졸업 후 대다수 학생을 시스템의 약자로 만들어버리는? 그런것 같습니다. 중고등학교 6년이 짧은 시간도 아니고, 이 시간동안 자신이 정말 흥미있어하는 분야를 깊게 공부한다면 정말 엄청날것같은데.. 개선됐으면 좋겠네요 진짜 :)

고2인데 EBS 수능특강 교재 학원에서 프린트로 맛보기 정도로만 했는데, 그래도 얼마 안 되는 배우는 기간동안 제일 많이 들은 소리가 너희가 평소에 알던 뜻으로 단어를 해석하면 안 된다, 전혀 들어보지도 못한 다른 생소한 뜻으로 쓰이는 단어들이 많다고...... 그래서 EBS가 해석하기 조금 까다롭다고 얘기를 하더라고요.

2년동안 바뀐거 하나 없고 나빠졌으면 더 나빠졌지 그냥 포기하셈 지금껏 변화 하나 없었으니 앞으로도 안바뀔거임

American and Korean SAT exams are different from Brits SAT. The closest is to take both GCSE's and A-Levels but A level exams requires 2 years of study that are subject specific, unlike the SAT's which is comprehensive to your learning starting from high school. A levels are definitely harder and more mind numbing. I remember a math question I skipped and the question was, "Mr. Thomas was perpending on riding the 7:40am train, but decided to take the 8:12am train instead. It takes 48 minutes to arrive in his office and advertently gets delayed for 2 minutes around the 25 to 28 minute mark due to a haphazard zigzag road. If the bus driver speeds up from its usual 40km/hr to 50km/hr, would Mr. Thompson arrive before 8:56am or not? Explain."

@@Jakeylicious7891 The question is easy, but hard to answer since you need to use mathematical equations to solve this. Since I'm not good at math and does not memorize any equations whatsoever, I always try to solve it logically and inadvertently make a made-up equation of my own. Sometimes, I get the answers right, but that still doesn't apply since you need the actual equation and not just some theorized probability even if you got the answers right. I wish the Department of Education in our country acknowledged this kind of stuff. Beats me, maybe I just don't know I'm already making hard equations into easy and improvised versions of it.

This is the reason Suicide rate is so high in Korea. And another sad fact is, their govt. is really proud of their education system because it created the oportunity for SO MANY Koreans to be in highest positions in international companies. It wasn't even close to this in 1950s. They consider it an important progress. What they won't even consider is that how many students are suffering mentally and physically. Simple logic "I suffered and worked really hard when I was student, why would young generation have it easy?" It's a toxic Asian Public sector mentality.
Also, another fact is Korean Education ranking is higher than many western countries and they take pride on it.

If you become a top student, then it is basically a status symbol. Schools are THAT important. If you went to a college in the countryside, then few people would employ you. Everyone works the absolute hardest they can because they want a job in the future. Even rich kids and etc aren't exempted. As I said before, your school is basically your status in life.
It's sad, but all of us want to be employed, living happy lives.

The thing that they’re doing wrong in the video is that they’re actually reading the paragraphs. After going through some of these questions, you notice that about 50% of the paragraph is absolute nonsense that doesn’t help you in answering the question. Sometimes, the answer can be determined from one sentence. Therefore, you should be reading the multiple choice answers first and then skimming the paragraph. To study for this test, you aren’t studying English per say. You’re rather studying how to more efficiently take a test.

미국에서 교육받고 몇년전 한국에서 영어 좀 가르쳤는데 같은 경험을 했습니다. 한국사람이 만든 영어 참고서는 오류 투성이라 결국 미국이나 영국에서 제작한 참고서를 썼네요...또 원어민 선생이라면 무조건 좋아하는데 그들 교육수준이 대체로 떨어져서 회화수준 이상 중,고급영어에서는 오류가 좀 있더군요..

왜 논문에서 따오는진 아시는지.. 대학다니시면 알텐데 보통 대학교재는 원서로 많이들 쓰는데 그럴때 논문단어가 필수적임. satiety 심리학에서도 자주 나오고 여러곳에서 나오는 전형적인 논문 단어. 그냥 논문 해석 능력 평가라 보면 됨.

제 나이또래 세대는 초4학년인가 5학년부터 영어수업을 시작했는데 그때 수업이 얼마나 재미없었는지 아직도 기억이 나네요...초등학교 저학년 때 따로 다녔던 영어학원에서는 영어회화 위주로 재밌게 가르쳤었기 때문에 그때만 해도 제가 영어를 재밌어한다고 생각했는데 초등학교에서의 영어문법 수업 이후부터 영어를 완전히 놓았습니다. 특히 고등학교 영어선생은 공부잘하는 학생들만 잘 가르쳐주고(그래봤자 수능영어지만) 나머지는 아예 대놓고 개무시를 하던 선생이었죠. 당연히 영어에 관심이 생길 일이 더욱 없었고요. 대학 들어와서 혼자 미드에 관심이 생기게 되면서 조금씩 감으로 영어를 알게됐고 문법을 정말 재밌게 잘 가르쳐주는 학원선생님 덕분에 흥미를 느끼면서 공부를 하다가 교내 지원을 받고 가는 어학연수 프로그램에 합격해 미국도 다녀왔습니다. 여기까지 돌이켜보니 제 영어공부에 있어서 학교가 도움을 준건 정말 단 한가지도 없더군요. 과연 이런데도 우리나라 영어교육에 문제가 없는것인지 의문스러울 뿐입니다.

나는 초등학교 3학년때 학교에서 처음 영어라는 걸 접했는데 너무 재미있었음 회화든, 단어든, 문법이든 다 좋았는데 영어가 딱 싫어진 시기가 고등학교때 3~4페이지가 넘는 영어지문 4,5개를 줄줄줄 외워야만 칠 수 있는 내신 시험이 너무 진절머리나서 영어 싫어짐. 진짜 이건 아니다 싶었음. 없던 외국어 공포증도 만드는 대단한 나라

맞아요.. 생각해보니 우리나라 교육은 무언가를 '포기'하게 만드는 교육이네요.

수능영어 공부안한애들의 울분

I think this was a translation from a Korean thesis and then it was fixed. I would love an English professor to have a look at these tests and really contact the authorities in Korea LOL!

AFAIK most of these texts are supposedly chosen by professors in Korean universities majored in English Literatures/English Education. Not all of those texts are written by them, actually, they are excerpts from news articles, novels, or even academic journals, so most of them are not translations. I am not sure if this is still the case since there have been several changes introduced last decade, but in its core they are not some translated text but somewhat written by English natives. Of course that does not prove they are well-written or well-suited for these kind of test.
Another thing to be considered is that English in Korean education is not comparable to French or Spanish educations in English-native countries. Primary aim for these tests are to prepare students when they go to university. Most of the texts you need to study throughout university are written in English with highly sophisticated styles, so you actually need to read these kind of texts quickly during university to survive. So English is obligatory course up to 9 years in primary school to high school in Korea. KSAT sure do have other foreign language tests like French, Spanish, German, Chinese, Japanese, and so on, but they are not as harsh as these.
I do acknowledge that these tests are ridiculously hard and stressful, and I am not trying to defend it at all, because I've been through all these. Heck, I even took depression medication on the KSAT year. Surely there would be much better way to do this, and I suspect that the way it is done is in its current form probably due to the cost to make this like TOEFL or something like that.

Then again, KSAT English test has some kind of difficulty curve throughout test, and there are much easier questions in the test, like much shorter sentences and much easier to pick answers that could be answered almost instantly. I believe these are the most hard questions, less than 6 questions per test if I remember correctly, and I think I took 2 minutes to read through one question.

@@seongkyungpark6900 지금 포커스가 다른듯. 목표가 대학입시든 뭐든간에 학교에서 하나의 언어를 배우는데 배워도 회화를 못하는 교육, 제도 자체가 무슨소용이 있냐는거. 언어과목이면 회화공부를하고 회화시험을 봐서 말그대로 제2외국어를 구사하는 방향으로 가야된다는 말임. 대학입시를 위한 수능에 외국어 문제가 저딴식으로 나오기때문에 저딴공부를 할수밖에 없는 지금 상황에서는 수능이 문제인거지. 그래서 댓님이 말하는게 교육이 잘못돼도 한참잘못됐다고 하는거.

터무니없는 단어가 구지 어렵게 돌려서 쓴다는 거지 맥락에 딱 들어맞는 단어가 아니라 쉽게 표현할 수 있는 문장을 뜻만보고 더 어려운 단어로 바꿔씀 밑에 주어지는 단어도 한두개가 다고.. 거의 단체이름이나 너무 전문적인단어

사람은 모두가 같지않습니다. 쌍둥이조차 후천적 요인에 의해 크게 사고방식이 크게 바뀌곤합니다.
교육을 통해서 국가가 원하는 인재를 길러내는 것은 가능하지만
모든 인간을 같은 방식으로 평가하는 방식은 분명 문제가 있습니다.
하지만 한계는 그렇다면 인간은 어떻게 평가해야하는가? 가 되겠죠

김이강 물론 빠르게 지식을읽고 해석하는 능력'도' 중요합니다 하지만 말씀하신 배경지식이 크게작용할때도 있습니다. 올해 논란이 많았던 수능 국어 31번도 있고 EBS연계교재에서 읽었던 연계지문(천변풍경, 오발탄, 비문학 명제지문, 일동장유가)같은 것들을 공부하여 배경지식이 된 학생에게는 좀 더 이해하기 쉬울 수 있습니다.
비판적 사고 역시 수능에 존재하고 그부분은 오히려 평가원에서 강조하는 점이라고 볼 수 있습니다. 2019 6평 10번, 2018 9평 18번 2017 수능 19번등 과 같이 주어진 관점에 근거하여 비평하는 문항이 있습니다.
물론, 고3 수험생의 능력을 과대평가하고 낸 2019수능은 아쉬움이 있습니다. 하지만, 공부의 길을 선택한사람들에 한해서 그들의 학습을 받는 능력을 평가 하고 대학이 이를 참고할 수 있게 해주는 수능이라는 시험자체는 굉장히 잘 만든 시험이라고 생각합니다.

I always knew that if I spent the time to study for a standardized test, using all the tricks and learning the patterns, a perfect score is achievable. I just was too lazy to cram like that when not cramming would yield a pretty good result anyway. I wasn’t trying to get into Harvard but for those people who are, a sufficient amount of time, probably also money for prep classes that just teaches strategies to pass exams, I’ve always found it to be pretty attainable. Like I said, I never studied and got good results so the thought of actually devoting time and effort into it made me think it wouldn’t be that hard.

회화 실력을 늘리려면 영어권 원어민하고 직접 대화하는 방법 밖에 없습니다. 영어를 책이나 오디오로 공부한거 하고 대화하는 것은 생리학적으로도 뇌의 영역이 틀립니다. 직접 해보시면 본인이 금방 느껴집니다. 생각자체를 계속 영어로 해야 하고 즉각적으로 생각이 말로 바뀌어 입에서 나오도록 연습하는 방법 밖에 없습니다.

꼭 외국인과 대화를 해서 연습할 필요는 없다고 생각합니다. 물론 그게 제일 좋은 방법이겠지만 말하는 게 안되면 말하는 걸 연습하면 되겠지요.
가령 외국 드라마에서 배우들이 하는 말을 그대로 따라해본다던가 거기에 자기가 말 한 것들 그대로 녹음해서 자기 스스로 확인하고 뭐가 문제인지 파악하면 그걸로도 충분히 많이 늘 것이라 생각합니다. 작문도 마찬가지로 자신의 생각을 영어로 바꿔서 적다보면 늘겠지요.
다만 주의해야 할 점이 한가지 있는데 실력이 느는데 시간이 오래 걸린다고 해서 실망해선 안된다는 겁니다.
외국인이 한국에서 한국말 배우는데 1년이 지났는데도 말은 잘 알아듣는데 발음이랑 문장 구성력이 어눌하다고 지능이 떨어지나라고 생각하지는 않지요?
다른 나라의 언어를 배우는데 시간이 적게 걸리지 않는 게 당연한 거죠.
하물며 외국인들 사이에서 배우는 것도 아니고 혼자 독학하는 데 미숙할 수 밖에 없는 거니까 실망하지 말고 꾸준히 하다 보면 좋은 결과가 있을 겁니다.

모든 비난을 영어 공교육으로만 돌릴 문제는 아니라고 봅니다. 공립학교에서 어학원식 ESL 코스를, 혹은 비슷하게라도 가르치려면 모든 학교에 영어가 모국어인 사람 혹은 모국어 수준으로 구사하는 사람이 필수적으로 필요하기 때문에 이 문제를 일단 해결해야 합니다. 더불어 한국에서는 일상생활에서 영어 사용 환경에 노출되는 경우가 많이 낮은 편이고, 그렇기 때문에 필요성도 낮지요. 유럽어와 달리 영어와 한국어/일본어 사이의 언어학적 거리도 상당히 멀고요. (영어가 모국어인 사람들이 러시아어, 히브리어, 힌디어, 태국어 를 습득하기 위해 걸리는 평균 학습 시간이 1100시간인 반면, 한국어와 일본어를 배우기 위해 걸리는 시간은 2200시간입니다.) 일상 생활에서 영어 사용 환경에 잘 노출되지 않기에 보통 사람은 영어로 의사소통을 해야 할 필요성을 크게 느끼지 못하며, 영어와 한국어는 서로 굉장히 다른 체계의 언어이기 때문에 훨씬 더 많은 노력을 필요로 하는 것이 주된 이유고, 공교육은 부차적인 문제 - 그렇다고 해서 지금의 영어 교육 체계가 무결완벽하다는 말은 아닙니다 - 라고 봅니다.

왜놈시대에 왜놈들의 문법위주의 영어 교육이 그대로 이어져 오고 있는 것이 원인. 그 전 조선시대 영어교육은 회화위주의 제대로 된 독자적인 교육이었다고 함. 당시 조선시대에 만든 영어 교재 보면 run 발음 표기를 “을러~언” 이거 보고 기가 찼다. 한글로 표시 할 수 일는 발음 표시로는 정말 최고라고 생각
