I met Barry at Pizza Hut 1 mile from my childhood home in 1996. He was with his family. My 2 friends & I were in awe. We lived in the suburbs of Detroit & were well aware of this man's brilliance & character. We grew up watching him. We asked for his autograph. He declined. Initially it shocked us. He then proceeded to sit with us for 10 minutes & reveal that spending time talking to us was more meaningful than his name written on some paper. To this day, I remember it vividly. If it was an autograph, I wouldn't. This is a very special person long before these highlight reels on the field.

2001, Barry walked into Best Buy in Pontiac, Michigan and I talked to him for 10 minutes about a computer he was looking at. He never said who he was, I never asked...but everyone was watching, pointing and whispering. He was very quiet and said thanks. I said hold on... He turned around and I said "we love you". He smiled, nodded, turned and walked away.
Later on the security manager told me if Barry wanted to take anything, he wouldn't even try to stop him. We all knew Barry was a legend. We all love Barry. The way he just handed off the football to the ref.....his humility is humbling.

Jim Brown was the best. Barry played in a playoff game against Green Bay and he rushed for NEGATIVE yardage. That's right he gained ZERO. The greatest? Nope. Many others I would pick. Gale Sayers, Walter Payton,Earl Campbell, etc.& Many more.

@@tylerbob4853 I don’t include Jim Brown in these debates because it’s just different eras and it’s nonsense to compare the two.
But I will say and compare this. You realize the Lions teams Barry Sanders played on were so horrendously awful you may as well put a highschool offensive line on the field…ever realize why he has the most negative yardage ? Which makes this all much more satisfying to say. Barry played for the Lions…Walter Payton played on one of the greatest teams ever assembled. I broke down Barry vs Walter.
      Barry vs Walter
      Barry played 37 less games
Only had 1457 yards less then him
      Had 776 LESS carries
Averaged 5.0 per carry vs Walter 4.4
Averaged 100 yards per game to Walter 88
      Andddd had 45 less fumbles
37 less games and he woulda shattered the all time record had he not retired in the prime of his career. I don’t mean to be that guy man…but just don’t even bother trying to argue my point. There is nothing to argue.

@@clifton12345 hello, interesting but Walter Payton for most of his career played on terrible teams too. Gayle Sayers played on bad teams and as far as Jim Brown not being the best why don't you talk to Barry's dad about it. Different era or not some of those older players were great. Don't forget the rules changes to help the offense and water down the game.

Wrong. It wasn’t the losing that did it. It was that the Lions had pinned him to that contract, then dumped a bunch of their best players. Barry knew they were gonna suck, pretty much the remainder of that time. His risk of injury would also skyrocket. He even admitted that’s why he quit.

Any GOAT, be it football, baseball, golf, basketball, hockey or any sport or game. The GOAT isn’t defined unless they possess the following:
      #1- work ethic
      #2- talent
      #3- the right team (support)
      #4- longevity
We can imagine, predict and claim all we want. If “this had happened”, “if he was on this team”, “if only he wasn’t injured”.
GOAT’s find themselves, put themselves or create the position to be the GOAT.
Fact is, we don’t get to vote who’s the GOAT, stats cast the vote. If the vote was who was the most elusive, it would be Barry. Most speed, Bo. Most punishing, Jim or Earl. Fact is,
Emmitt is the all time leading rusher today, he is the GOAT.

If I had 1 game to pick one running back in his prime (or any year when we are talking about Barry), I would pick Barryover anyone else. Period. That's what the greatest of all time means. To say Emmitt is the GOAT is like saying Frank Gore is a better running back then LaDainian Tomlinson when you can easily see, that was never the case. In case you want to rebuttal that, I want to remind you that Gore has 1 season of more than 1,250 yards in a season.

      @waltershattenkirk3087 3 년 전

Greg Wright I respectfully disagree. And if you go back and read the entirety of my post, you will see i consider the definition of GOAT to be highly subjective. You are defining GOAT as the most talented, in the case of Barry, I agree with you. He was a beast, unfortunately, after 10 years in the league, he said I’m done.
Emmitt on the other hand, hitched his wagon to an up and coming winner. GOATS don’t hitch their wagon to loosing teams, if they do, they fall into the “what if/only if” category. Barry may be your favorite, he isn’t the GOAT.
One more thing, my favorite NFL player, bar none, is Marino. The most talented passer the league has ever seen. Dan was the biggest fish in a small pond. Neither Dan or Barry fought to change their circumstance. For that reason, neither can be considered GOAT.

"and you're the guy and you are risking your neck, your body, your mind"
Emmitt is spot on. The organization failed Barry and he lost the love for the game, gave it his all for years and walked away.

From a guy who was 14 when he came into the NFL. It was my privilege to get to watch this man play. The absolute best running back I ever have seen. If Barry would have had the line that emit Smith had. No person alive would ever touch the yards that man would have put up.

The man: Did not dance, did not boast, did not spike the ball, always handed the ball to the ref, never quit on a play,, was always humble, and always scared the living sh*t out of the opposition! Barry is arguably the best running back who ever played.

Growing up as a young kid in Michigan I was a Lions fan and particularly a fan of Barry, but one thing that always stood out to me was how after a TD he would just drop the ball and go back to work.. it was so different from anything else I'd seen, and it made a lasting impact on me. I thought that's how I want to be. He was the epitome of humble.

Damn, I have so much freaking respect for Barry Sanders. I mean the man just understood what really matters in life. And the fact that he hated how football players were treated as if they were royalty or better then everyone else, to me, proves he's just a really good man. Who happens to be in the top 3 all time running backs.

I have more respect for Barry Sanders than for any other player to ever play the game. To be as great as he was while being so humble is rare. The NFL needs more Barry Sanders and less "everyone look at me" personalities. I doubt I'll ever see another player in my lifetime with his skill and character.
