African mourning dove sounds
The weirdly human sounds of the African mourning dove - Streptopelia decipiens
One of the most surprising discoveries on my trips to Africa was the call of the African mourning dove. I was in Senegal in 2017 when I kept hearing this ridiculous sound over and over. It sounded downright artificial and comical so I brushed it off as something playing back on a phone, but eventually I saw a few of these doves in a bush and the sounds seemed to originate there.
When it finally dawned on me that the doves were making this sound, my first thought was how can I record this! All my rigs were in the field, so I put the Sony D100 in the tree and left it out there for a few hours. Luckily this didn't s...

This is the weirdest dove sound I ever heard 👀😅
The Grudge Should start taking Notes.
Thank you George Vlad. I am very happy with this natural Kalimantan musical instrument, there I feel peace and calm ❤
Do you have any longer recording of this? I think it is a fantastic sound 😄
Great photograph also, George, the myriad hues of 'dove gray' .
Epic..Helmeted Hornbill at min 22. Awesome.
Love this
Great to hear that.
Wow amazing!!✨
Thank you! 😄
Amazing. Thank you.
Glad you liked it!
Brilliant, George! 👌
Cheers Rick!
Not quite what I expected! 🐓 Thanks as usual for sharing.
Yep, it's the Red junglefowl that sound more similar to present day roosters. I will try and record those on my next trip to this area.
thanks, George.
Always a pleasure to share these sounds.
They are asking what’s for dinner
Thank you for this George, i really appreciate this video, thank you. I was looking for this. Low frequency rumbling, the sort elephant produce, it’s apparently below human hearing range, do you know how this is recorded and then brought into range of human hearing in post? I note Shotgun mics being used commonly for wildlife, is there a reason Parabolic mics aren’t often seen in these behind the scenes wildlife recording videos. How do you record at distance without a parabolic?
While elephant rumbles and growls have a lot of infrasonic energy, part of them is within the human hearing range so not impossible to record and hear. Parabolic reflectors are limited by their size, and everything below around 1kHz does not translate well when recorded. This is why I don't like them very much. I would rather set up a drop rig in areas where I expect animals to be and record them that way.
@@GeorgeVlad very interesting, thank you for the reply and sharing that. Much appreciated
I am so grateful to have been able to connect with you through the Internet. I admire and admire your work and passion. After seeing your blog, I prepared an olympus ls-11 and a pair of clippy em272 microphones to try to record nature where I am. I wish you good luck as always, and thank you for allowing me to listen to your wonderful work.
Wow, thank you for the kind words. Hope you can get out there and record as much as you want.
The sound is incredible. Thank you.
Thank you too!
Listening to your rainforest recording on a DT 770 Pro (250 OHM) headset. Delicious! Thank you. 🤗
Perfect, you are doing it right!
Haha! Thank you Sir!
That is a bunch of fun sounds!
Couldn’t agree more!
Love it man! Cheers
Appreciate it!
Thank you so much. I love your rainforest soundscapes
Thank you too!
É muito bacana mesmo😊
Muito obrigado!
You don't mention anywhere what time of the day that is? I think it is more dusk than dawn? 🤔
You’re right, it’s late afternoon.
Hello George! You use one MKH 30 and two MKH 8040 for the double MS. To decode double MS, do you use the double MS plugin from Shoeps? Or are you using another plugin?
That’s the one I’ve been using, but it’s a bit old and buggy.
@@GeorgeVlad OK thanks ! I also use it with Studio one. I imagine you are working on Pro tools
I use Reaper for DMS decoding and surround work.
@@GeorgeVlad OK ! I don't know if you knew this but studio one made an update. We can now mix in surround and also use Dolby Atmos!
@itachi__ Thanks. I’ve never used Studio one and I’m very comfortable with the software I use.

the price tho argh
It wasn't easy to make this library. The expedition alone cost more than $10k, and that doesn't take into account the cost of equipment, time spent learning and experimenting, and my hours of work that went into it. It's quite affordable to be honest and I will raise my prices soon.
@@GeorgeVlad Not disputing your efforts, but the majority of products, even coffee, tomatoes or bananas in the supermarket, cost 10,000s of pounds and more, to create and deliver per batch. A blockbusting movie can cost millions of $ but they recoup through economies of scale, not by charging ridiculous amounts for each movie ticket. Re affordability, have you checked people's living costs of lately? A lot of engineers are already on a budget. But of course you are free to charge whatever you prefer, that's your right, I'm just trying to add to the discussion, as an honest participant in the market. Good work in either case!
Likely because you have identified them, I am comforted by their low frequency. It's the high pitched sounds that put me immediately on edge.
I've noticed that as well, as soon as you can identify something it doesn't seem so threatening anymore.
Thank you, George. Certainly, one of the most handsome of buzzards.
Couldn't agree more, just look at them!
You have some really cool recorded sounds. May I buy a license to use your desert wind sound in my music?
Thanks, you can buy my desert recordings at www.asoundeffect.com/sound-library/arabian-desert/.
@@GeorgeVlad tysm
@@GeorgeVlad once I buy can I use any sound in that recording or will I need to rebuy? If sound is used to make music for an anime that may or may not go anywhere, is there a different fee? What is licensing for that and how do I put your name to it as original author?
@@deborahwenrich2013 Here's a link to the full license: mindful-audio.com/eula. You can use all the recordings in the library and you only need to pay once. You don't need to credit me but you are not allowed to sell the recordings as they are, they need to be mixed with one or more types of media.
some ideas for other mics as LOM uci/usi are sold out and it seems no longer available
Is this a question?
@@GeorgeVlad yes- Lom mics are no longer available. Do you have possibly different recommendations?
They are available every now and then but they sell out very quickly. You have to sign up for their mailing list to know when it happens. Otherwise I've mentioned a few other brands in this blog post: mindful-audio.com/blog/rugged-sound-recording-equipment
Thats quite awesome. It sounds like it was close your rig 😊
It was! All that hiking was worth it.
What is the cause of the sound at 0:29
That is the famous whistle of the P51 Mustang.
Wow, my African red-bellied parrot freaked out at this one big time -- I had to comfort him after hearing it! He was born and raised here in the States, but his parents were said to be from the highlands of Tanzania or Ethiopia.(Red-bellied's natural range in the wild) Could it be that there's a cultural transmission of sorts? Or perhaps just sheer instinct? Thanks again so much for sharing. From now on, I'll be a little more careful when I click "play" on a bird video with him nearby....
I don't know about that and I think keeping wild animals as pets is ethically and morally wrong.
@@GeorgeVlad I agree, and therefore am somewhat of a hypocrite. Skeeter was a “rescue” - previously kept 24/7 in a cage for the first ten years of his life, and then surrendered up only to be rejected by a breeding program because he’d irrevocably imprinted on humans and attacked any other birds he came into contact with. I didn’t understand it fully when we took him in, but now I do: parrots are indeed wild, highly sociable creatures and should not be kept as pets.
@@LauraGYoungSo many parrots in capativity suffer because many people don't understand what they get themselves into and what parrots need. They actually need more than we humans can offer them in capativity.
@@Blue_Lugia So very true.
I think my neighbors have pet Agur Buzzards. That must be why I can hear weird noises from their appartment.....🤐
😂
I'm no good at buzzards but i teach people to do lion impressions - i'm doing a roaring trade !

Wow, that is really neat.

Amazing!
Thanks!
Beautiful George :)
Thank you! Cheers!
Incredible sound bite, my friend. Thank you!
Glad you like it!
Great recording George. Greetings Karl-David
Thanks!
I think they are beautiful in a way...they have this "rolling" quality to them, rather than sounding "harsh" (if that makes any sense LOL). Still scary, but yea, also beautiful...
Yep, that makes sense for sure,
I know this video was 4 years ago, but do you have upgraded set up or do you still use the same kit?
I still use these recorders and mics, but I've added other rigs to my kit list. Zoom F3 and F6, SD Mixpre 2nd gen, Sennheiser MKH mics etc.
gorgeous soundscape
Thanks, couldn't agree more.
Wow, how first class job!!! Thank's for sharing this amasing video!!!❤️💚
Glad you enjoyed it!
😊😘
This sound goes with my indoor Neoregelia Bromeliads.
Excellent, they will love it.
Luscious, soft, and soothing. Thank you, George.
Thanks for listening, Sabina.
