The sounds of leopards and other wildlife in the African savannah

  • Leopards, insects, frogs and birds calling at night in the African bush
I've been traveling to Africa to record wildlife and nature sounds (and occasionally cultural and other human elements) since 2016. One of my main targets has always been the deep sawing growl of the leopard - Panthera pardus. Unfortunately this sound has eluded me for many years and on countless expeditions!
How is this possible? Obviously nothing is guaranteed in the real world - the African bush is not a zoo. Even though I've seen countless leopards, they were not interested in calling while I was trying to record them. When I went to Kenya in 2021 I there were large numbers of leopards, some of them even venturing into our camp at night. Unfortunately there were two lion prides in the area and it looks like leopards can be shy and quiet around lions. Same story in South Luangwa, arguably Leopard Central if there ever was such a place. Plenty of lions calling but zero leopards to record.
Fast forward to my recent expedition to Botswana and Zimbabwe where I finally managed to capture some distant leopard sounds. In Botswana there was a resident leopard in the Limpopo area and it called several times, although quite far from my mics. In Mana Pools, Zimbabwe there were lions but the leopards there didn't care too much about them as there seemed to be plenty of prey for everyone. As a result I managed to capture several calls with one of my drop rigs. While these sounds are not very usable for sound design, they are beautiful to listen to and to immerse oneself in the soundscape of the African bush at night. Enjoy!
