***Here is the translation Part II*** This competition led Seong-Jin Cho to enter the Conservatoire de Paris in 2012, a world-famous conservatory at age 18. While attending the conservatory, he participated in the Arthur Rubinstein Competition in 2014 and received Third prize, the Best Performer of Chamber Music Prize, and the Junior Jury Prize. In lieu of his military exemption, he returned to Korea for a short-term mandatory basic military training in Nonsan. Arriving back at the Paris practice room, he prepared for the greatest challenge of his life. The Olympics and World Cup are held every four years. There are international competitions for piano as grand as the Olympics and the World Cup; that is the Chopin International Piano Competition. It is a global event held every five years with a longer cycle than the Olympics and World Cup. It is the most-coveted of competitions with an international reputation. The great pianists worldwide compete to be selected the best by performing only Chopin's compositions, the most outstanding piano composer of all time. In this great competition, at the Chopin International Piano Competition in 2015, 21-year-old Seong-Jin Cho won First Prize, becoming the first South Korean pianist to do so. This competition led Seong-Jin Cho to enter the Conservatoire de Paris in 2012, a world-famous conservatory at age 18.
While attending the conservatory, he participated in the Arthur Rubinstein Competition in 2014 and received Third prize, the Best Performer of Chamber Music Prize, and the Junior Jury Prize. In lieu of his military exemption, he returned to Korea for a short-term mandatory basic military training in Nonsan.
Arriving back at the Paris practice room, he prepared for the greatest challenge of his life. The Olympics and World Cup are held every four years. There are international competitions for piano as grand as the Olympics and the World Cup; that is the Chopin International Piano Competition. It is a global event held every five years with a longer cycle than the Olympics and World Cup. It is the most-coveted of competitions with an international reputation. The great pianists worldwide compete to be selected the best by performing only Chopin's compositions, the most outstanding piano composer of all time.
In this great competition, at the Chopin International Piano Competition in 2015, 21-year-old Seong-Jin Cho won First Prize, becoming the first South Korean pianist to do so. He won with stability through overwhelming skills and fresh interpretations in each round without significant ups and downs, from the Preliminary, the qualifying, the first, the second, to the finals.
Shortly after winning the competition, Seong-Jin Cho experienced a significant change in his life. Seong-Jin Cho's victory became a big topic in Korea, and at the same time, he rose to fame- becoming one of the top international pianists.
There was some controversy in the process of him winning the competition. The judges' score sheet revealed that one judge who gave him 23 points, a passing score, in the first round suddenly failed him by giving him 14 points in the second round and only 1 point in the finals. It was Philippe Entremont, a French conductor and pianist.
Some say this controversy was caused by a negative relationship between Seong-Jin Cho's teacher Michel Beroff at the Conservatoire de Paris and the judge, Entremont. Others say Entremont gave him one 1 point due to the difference in interpreting the music. However, his teacher Michel Beroff stated that they had a normal colleague relationship and no problem. Seong-Jin Cho showed a big heart and said that the evaluation standard could be different from person to person and that he respected Entremont's evaluation. It's more admirable in the sense that he still took first place despite the disadvantage.
Shortly after winning the Chopin Competition, Seong-Jin Cho said he was happier now that he no longer had to compete in competitions. One can see that performing as a pianist brings greater happiness to Seong-Jin Cho than performing as a competitor does.
Before winning the Chopin Competition, he played 15 to 20 concerts a year. [Translator: I believe he said 20-30 if it matters]. After the win, the number of concerts held increased by more than double; he performed over 80 shows per year between 2015 and 2017. Seong-Jin Cho was born in Seoul on May 28, 1994, and turned 28 this year [Translator: 27 in international age]. Surprisingly, there is nothing unusual about how Seong-Jin Cho started playing the piano. His first encounter with the piano took place when he joined a music academy with his friends at age 6. Like any ordinary child, his parents only introduced him to the piano as an after-school activity.
A year later, he learned violin and piano simultaneously but quit the violin because he didn't like practicing while standing, and he wanted to continue concentrating on the piano.
As he was getting used to the piano, the music academy's director, a man with a good eye for talent, discovered Seong-Jin Cho's gift. Seong-Jin Cho later got accepted to Seoul Arts Center Music Academy. He began taking lessons from a university professor Sook-Ryeun Park at a professional level.
At the first competition he participated in, he placed 3rd for the lower elementary grades of the Chopin Junior Piano Competition. While he was launching a successful path by winning first prize at competitions such as the 4th-grade division of the 2004 Music Chunchu Concour, he only ranked 2nd place in the Ihwa Kyunghyang in 2005. Seong-Jin Cho reentered the same competition the following year, won first prize, and said, "I learned that there is no eternal first place or last place. I will continue to study the piano with a humble mindset." It was a very mature and unusual answer from an elementary kid.
Seong-Jin Cho, who was maturing one step ahead, gave his first solo recital at the Kumho Youngjae (gifted & talented) Concert in 2005 when he was 12 years old [Translator: 11 in international age]. He won the grand prize at the All Music World Competition and was admitted to Yewon School, an arts-based middle school. He studied under Professor/pianist Soo-Jung Shin, among Korea's first-generation classical musicians, Kyunghwa Chung and Kun-woo Paik. She guided Seong-Jin Cho, who had demonstrated top talent since elementary school, to become a true master.
As a middle schooler, he won the 6th International Fryderyk Chopin Competition for Young Pianists in 2008, the first international competition he participated in. He competed with a Russian piano prodigy, 16-year-old Nikolai Hazainnov, who had won first place four times in various international competitions.
A year later, in 2009, he shocks the world; at age 15, he becomes the youngest winner in its history and the first Asian to win the 7th Hamamatsu International Piano Competition in Japan. Consequently, he gets exempted from the Korean military service [Translator: of 18-24 months] early on, which could have otherwise been a huge stumbling block [Translator: Even BTS members didn't get the exemption despite their global achievements. Military service is compulsory for all Korean men, except for those who perform exceptionally in international sports- or musical events].
One day, Conductor Myung-Whun Chung attended an awards ceremony by chance, and a teen played Chopin Scherzo No. 2 there. "I attended an award ceremony, and a child played the piano. He wasn't an ordinary kid. It was the same piece that I had played in front of Zubin Mehta. He played the piece so profoundly that I was no comparison to him." [Translator: Cho was 13 years old here, and Myung-Whun Chung was 15. Chung placed second at the International Tchaikovsky Competition later at age 21.] Myung-Whun Chung was so moved by that single performance at the awards ceremony, and Seong-Jin Cho was selected on the spot that day as the youngest soloist to perform with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra.
Seong-Jin Cho performed at a ceremony in Washington DC, where the world-renowned conductor Lorin Maazel happened to listen to him performing. "He has a bright future, and we will be in touch." Two months later, he performed with Lorin Maazel.
Coming this far would be considered a successful career as a classical musician, but it is not all for him. Seong-Jin Cho hadn't even made it to high school yet.
In 2011, while attending Seoul Arts High School, Seong-Jin Cho placed third in the piano section of the International Tchaikovsky Competition. The second-place winner was Yeol Eum Son, a Korean pianist internationally recognized. Seong-Jin Cho, the youngest participant, received worldwide attention after finishing third at the Tchaikovsky International Competition, after Yeol Eum Son.
