Here's a little update from Phoenix:
Vickie Eichelberger has obtained her papers and has been living in her own flat since October 2023. Peter Moya also found affordable accommodation in early 2024. Unfortunately, his faithful companion, Superman, died in November 2023.

I have been homeless for awhile now in Phoenix. I work full time. The cost of living has blown up, but companies refuse to adjust to take care of their employees. My company which claims compassion as a hallmark of their core beliefs, will pay so little that I cannot afford to qualify to even rent a home. Greed is the problem. Greedy landlords, Greedy bosses. Greedy Country.
Landlords have to pay bills too.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around our home of 60 years has been accessed a valuation that has increased 10 times the original value with absolutely nothing done to it. If property taxes double or triple...your rent will too. Just like you suddenly get $20 to make a hamburger. Your hamburger will cost $16. You are right the real virus is greed. That will destroy us.

Same. Was last homeless back in 2016. Medical bills garnished my paychecks & I had no choice but to give up my house & move into a shite travel trailer! I did so on my own BEFORE I ended up getting evicted & was living in my car for 2 months, & worked like 80 hrs a wk in a Nursing Home as a CNA . I put my stuff into storage. Moving into the trailer saved me around 500 bucks pm. 500 bucks I just didn't have, no matter how hard I worked. I also had a car payment. It's true. It can happen to ANYONE! ๐คทโโ๏ธ

I am a senior who is now homeless, first time ever, due to rising rental costs in BC Canada. Unbelievable. Very difficult. It may lead to my early death.

This is so scary. I bought a small house before retirement instead of renting and now I think it was the smartest decison I ever made.
Not if you lived under rent control like me in Canada. My rent is pegged to inflation and utilities are all included. I won't tell you the price beause you'd all want to kill me.
I'm very glad for you we got a 1,000 sq. foot hoe 30 years ago and it is too big for us now that we are retired. Funny how most Americans want such a huge house

We need to normalize a simple lifestyle and stop normalizing debt. Huge SUVs, huge houses and private universities are simply not necessary. I wish I could find it, but I remember reading a study once that claimed financially insolvent men had 1.5-2x more sexual partners than their financially solvent counterparts.
I think people should also seriously look into investing of some kind. Something that brings money back to your pocket, real estate, stocks, whatever can bring back value to their bank account rather than draining it. Obviously investing has its risks but so does just having money in depreciating assets or straight up liabilities.

The median rent is 2000. A lot of financial professionals especially the one I work with Samuel Peter Descovich agree that one should not spend more than 30% of their gross income on rent. That means you need to make a minimum of about $80,000. Interesting considering the median income is $54,000.

Only 10% of all property in the entire country is owned by a corporation and those numbers are as recent as last month November 2023. That increase in rent should not be allowed. There should be more regulation on housing and food.
Government should help citizens first with housing assistance. Based on income, housing assistance should be paid to landlords, especially for seniors and veterans. Citizens should be able to apply for housing assistance prior to being evicted. It might save everyone money in the long run.

Homelessness is common in America now. Wages have not kept up with the cost of living. And some of these people have drug or mental health issues. It's really sad

I am a baby boomer and I remember how low the wages were in the late 1960's and into the early 1980's. They were office jobs that paid anywhere from $4,000 to $8,000 per year for a 40 hour a week job and that was considered a good job. What were young people supposed to do back then? I never, ever considered working in fast food so my first jobs were in banking - YES banking!!!! This is not the baby boomer generation's fault!!!! I am 75 years old now and have a real pension and SS but if my parents had not left me money then I do not know what I would've done!!!! I worked for 44 years!!!
My 38 yr old son died in September from an overdose..he was homeless for 5 yrs..he finally gave up..tired of the struggle..im 67..couldnt afford to house him..im living on 800 a month..hes not suffering any longer.
I lost my daughter last Easter. She had mental illness her landlord raised her rent almost $400 a month, she couldn't possibly pay that increase. My mom left me a house, I live just outside Yuma. My daughter wouldn't be able to get services here. My insurances and taxes have gone up so much just in 3 years Idk if I'll be able to keep my house. I'm 58 with severe disabilities. I'm very afraid of what's going to happen, I'm afraid for my son too. I'll never know my grandchildren because my son can't afford to have kids.
if you ever lose your house, just go to Mexico, find a quit town at the beach, and don't look back. You will be able to live there with 800 dollars a month@@sleepstate1

Iโm from west Europe, and I donโt understand why people in America think itโs the land of dreams .itโs a nightmare for most people who get sick and got no social security system.
there is a simple thing called health insurance to prevent these kinds of situations. there is also free social healhcare for the poor, as well as welfare, food, and housing benefits for the poor. We also have social security benefits for people who have worked and paid into the system. I don't understand why people from Europe make these kinds of comments without educating themselvs, especially when Europe has a homeless problem as well.
Please. Western Europeans, especially French, are very ignorant of what happens in the US. We have health insurance even for unemployed people as well as State Healthcare paid by taxes. Many of the folks who are homeless are suffering from drug addictions or have been kicked out by their spouses and have too much pride to go home to their families.

A disgrace. Here in Switzerland I pay a lot more for my own health insurance, but the longest I had to wait for an appointment was two days. 48 hours. And when I told them that in Bavaria it takes at least six weeks, they laugh it off (โWell, now youโre in Switzerland. Forget Germany.โ)

This sounds so much like what happened to our family. My daughter was diagnosed with 120 degree scoliosis. Our insurance would not cover the surgery until her rib punctured her heart which was 1/4" away. Shriner's of St Louis did her operations which cost 5.5 million dollars. There were so many other things that added up including transportation to and from Kansas, audiologist blood which the red cross charged us $1500 x 6 a pint up front for each operation, x rays, doctors at home, time lost from work. My antiques store was closed more than open so we depended on my husband's salary. It was all too much for him to handle including also having an autistic son in special education so he left us. When he left I was unable to pay the mortgage and insurance on both my home and business. The kids and I got a one room studio apartment. I finally had a nervous breakdown and now we are all living in a studio sized public housing tower. My 1995 Jeep Cherokee was stolen so we are riding buses everywhere. My autistic son rides three buses each way to get back and forth to the community college. We are a paycheck away from homelessness and will never recover.

As a baby boomer in bad health and on social security only, if my only child and her family hadn't taken me in, I would be one of the many living on the streets. During Covid, I went through all of my savings and ended up having to sell my car because I couldn't afford the repairs. My heart breaks whenever I see or hear of the elderly that are homeless.

Im currently living it this year. Never thought id be a single mom and homeless. Been rough since my divorce after 13 years together, then i lost my job and have had a hard time finding something else for awhile. Ive never been in a situation like this and ive been working since 14 and on my own since 16. Just thankful to have a hotel room for Christmas.
I finally found a good job, just doesn't start until Jan 9. This job is going to get my son and I back on our feet and im so happy and grateful for it.
Young people will be hired for a job. The elderly will not be hired.

This is so sad. As 26 with one child. Me and my partner currently staying in a hotel after losing our temporary housing. And our home back in 2022. I cant imagine what's going to happen to us in the future ๐
Please stay strong and keep struggling. My homeless nightmare in America went on 38 years before I was helped by my community. Thank you everyone fighting for the homeless people and are elders who always deserve respect and dignity. They will be housed! It just takes a bit of time.

Crazy I was homeless here right when Covid started. I stayed in that same shelter and I was probably one of the only few people not on drugs. Literally almost everyone of those people there were on drugs. It was the worse experience of my life, but Iโm so thankful for it because it humbled me like no other.

My nephew became homeless with the housing crash in Cali 2008, Lost his business which was moving people from one house to another. Then the Santa Rosa fires burnt Him out of the house he was living in as the entire subdivision was leveled. He rented a space in a barn. He died of heart failure a year after the fires.
So sorry to hear that! The government could have bought large apt complexes for low income people but of course, they never did and now itโs very expensive to purchase these type of properties! I had a business in San Diego but with the economy crash we left in 2007. So many tried to stop us friends and family but numbers never lie and it was going to get bad. 2008 was probably the worst year in California, friends and family were trying to leave but their was no money with no jobs.
It costed us almost $10k to relocate all across to the Midwest. Worth it to this day.

This is beyond sad. I am a 1964 baby boomer and I own a home with a "low" monthly payment and I always try to always be ahead two house payments however, I always pray hard to never experience anything like this ๐ข๐ญ
1964 same as yourselves. I make a small 6 figure income, even a small 7 figure net worth but I'm still worried a major illness could do this to me. I would like to marry but that can be hazardous also these days with divorce happy courts.

Hi jerseygirl. Keep that payment low and hopefully pay it off soon. NJ has lots of help for seniors once you hit 65.
If your payment is low, try to pay it off early. You'll need to be debt free for retirement.
I've watched many of these homeless videos and I'm so sick of trolls saying it's all drug addicts and lazy people. I guess that makes them sleep better at night thinking it will never happen to them. I'm sure many of these people thought the same way yet here they are.

I loved Sweden's socialism when I was an exchange student there in the early 70s. Middle class Americans would have considered it poverty, but everybody had what they needed.

The rent increase is real. Just before I moved into my new house my apartment announced they were raising the rent from $950 to $1400 a month. I could afford that because that was what my future mortgage payment was going to be but I ended up having to go month to month because Covid led to supply shortages that indefinitely delayed my build and I had no clue when it would be done, the homebuilder wouldn't give me a closing date so I couldn't sign a long term lease. Month to month shot up from &1450 a month before covid to $2150 a month. I ended up blowing through all my savings to cover rent and I just barely moved in as I was down to my last $100 that wasn't tied up in the down payment for the house, closing costs, etc. I was actually contemplating living out of my car in the Costco parking lot next to the school I worked at before I finally received the news that house would be completed

Being born as a baby boomer had its advantages in terms of growth in the US economy. But what people need it still was not easy many of us held jobs in jr. high and high school, while working our way through college, which it was still a financial stretch. The family usually had only one black and white TV. Eating out was still considered a luxury.
We didn't pay for television. We paid very little for a telephone to hang on the wall. We certainly didn't have Wi-Fi. These are all things people think they have to have now.

This is heat breaking and scary to end up homeless. I am single on a fixed income. I don't know what I would do if I didn't own a house. The only sad thing is I ended up in debt fixing all repairs builder failed to do and thought of having to rent because of massive debt scares me. My heart breaks for these people. I cried watching this video

This was very disheartening to watch. Many of us are just one accident, health crisis, or job loss away from homelessness. Once you're homeless, it's extremely difficult to climb back out of that hole. I don't know the solution but radical ideas are needed.
Here are a few radical ideas:
1)get valuable marketable skills
2)live below your means. Quit buying stupid crap you dont need. Stop all unnecessary spending.
3) buy assets that make money/increase in value instead of liabilities that decrease in value.
4) instead of hanging out with loosers, get a side hustle that can be turned into a full time gig.

I am a baby boomer and it saddens me to see this going on to all the people who made America strong Vietnam Veterans etc. Shame on our government!!!! I and my husband are Veterans as well. If it weren't for my smart husband leaving the city and moving into a rural town outside of El Paos,Tx. we would be in same predicament. Managing money is different from accumulating wealth, and the lack of investment education in schools may explain why people struggle to maintain their financial gains. I personally benefited from the market crisis as I embrace challenging times while others tend to avoid them. Well, at least my advisor does too, jokingly.

Homelessness is all over the world and it is a crisis. There needs to be more housing everywhere.
I have just recently returned to Phoenix after 13 years. The rent here has gone up 300% since 13 years ago.
I am 69 and not far from that situation. Things are too expensive and government is a lie
The takeaway that I see from this is that entering retirement as a renter is very dangerous. Of course, if one is well off and can easily afford the rent, then no problem.
You either need to be rich or have nothing in retirement, everyone else suffers. At 62 you can move into assisted living and they pay for everything, but you can't have anything, no assets really at all.
Limited supply means waiting lists for subsidized living most places.
Even if you have a paid off house, property tax and insurance can cause ruin if you are in areas that have raised property tax so high it's impossible to pay it.

@@benton-benton If one is in that situation, then sell the paid off house and buy another house where taxes are more affordable. Also be aware many jurisdictions have property tax exemptions for senior and disabled citizens. I know senior citizens who pay no property taxes on their paid off homes.

I thank God for my mother. After tearing up my right arm are a third time due to lifting heavy patients; she held my settlement money. We looked for something I could manage if I became totally disabled. That was 30 years ago. I bought a small double wide with the money. Best move I ever made. I thank her for making me listen. I also would have been homeless; with the increase in rent.

I was homeless for 3 years, thanks to LAFH I recovered from homelessness within a year after being housed, and it's been almost 5 years since then I've always have had a job, and now have two jobs, so I'm paying back to the economy fast & plenty. We need more people to help, there's not enough!!! it took over half a year for LAFH to get me housed after applied. I appreciate their support and efforts and will make donations when I build better wealth. Huge homelessness means poor leadership!

I'm a single mom and we've been homeless for about 2.5 months now. I finally found a new great paying job, but it doesn't start until January 9th. We stay in hotels when we have money, but usually we live in my car. This new job will get us back on our feet, thankfully. It's the getting by until then that's difficult. But, I see the light at the end of the tunnel and I know this rough time won't last forever. I've never gone through something like this before and im 47. I've been working since 14 and moved out at 16.

@@frauditorreaper Thank you! Even though I'm always neat, tidy & ultra hygienic. Took showers at least 5 days a week during homelessness. Job recruiters can sense that something's wrong, I could see it in their eyes, and I couldn't get a job. When I looked at people's faces they seemed so well nourished and pampered to me, although they're just regular people, that's because they have a shelter. My paradigm (the way I saw the world) was compromised which was further depressing. I probably looked awful during those years, hardly employable. Right now I feel like I don't even have to sell myself, I can get hired easily. But when I was homeless, I couldn't get a job. Don't get me wrong I don't judge a book by it's cover myself, but unfortunately that's how I witnessed it that people perhaps subconsciously judged me by the way I appeared & adequate trust couldn't be established... I wish you a good luck, and good for you being able to get a job so fast!!!

This is terrible. Not only do I worry about my grandmother who's in her late '80s now, but I also worry about my father who will be 63 in March. Corporate greed is the reason why so many Americans are facing homelessness now even some who are younger. These private real estate companies are buying up apartment complexes across the country and overcharging more than what these places are worth even if they're in a bad area. It's unfair to people who earn less. I myself have a developmental disability and was pretty much screwed over early on in my teens and early 20s by a vocational rehab program that was supposed to help me find me a permanent job. I'm just getting my life together. I decided to eventually get my passport and leave the US for good. I earn money online now. By the time I reach my dad's age, I could end up on the streets. That's something I don't want especially after seeing my mom experience homeless due to her mental illness.
This is so heartbreaking.
When working in Montana I filed for disability. My lower back is terrible shape. I was told within a year I would have it. It took longer and my money run out. One Sunday after church I packed up my things and went to a shelter in the town nearby. I fared better than most. Some people had no transportation or anything. It took another six months until everything was approved. There's alot if the population who's one month between having a house and homelessness. Thanks for sharing.

Today families have to pull together and take in thier parents and grandparents. The grandkids can enjoy the love of grandparents in the home. Living alone today is a luxury.
in Finland they give the homeless a solo apartment and also get them help with their problems. It gives them a breathing space to sort themselves out and start again. They have found that it not only gets people off the street, gives them some dignity, it is cost effective compared to not doing anything but provide day time shelters so the old problems continue.
This world is beyond broken alllllll over the globe and i pray for humanity all the time.
I grew up in Phoenix Arizona I don't ever remember seeing any homeless people around & I was all over the valley of the sun. I moved away from there in 89 as it appeared to be going downhill back then. It's a tough place to be without a roof over your head. I pray these people will find a better place to live.
Try going downtown. There has been a homeless tent park there for over 30 yrs

I left Arizona a few years ago. It's just, not a happy place in the Phoenix area. The nature is pretty, but it's all fake. Nobody cares about eachother there. Its just me me me. I now live in Florida. I own land in a small town where people know each other. It's truly affordable here. Arizona is a trap. It's "low tax" but everything is expensive.

@flanagamer I'll be honest man, I have a decent enough job and property to my name which means I'm kind of immune to the rent situation right now. Rent is high in Orlando, but it has been for a while. There's affordable places to live all over, just not in as trendy of places as the major metros. My fellow Gen Z will complain about the rent, I just quit my lease, bought some land in the middle of the sticks and put a manufactured home on it. My commute to work is utter buttcheeks, but my car is good on gas and I can afford to screw around and be a stoner redneck without anyone to bother me.
came out in 2007 when i was just 18 to live with family i had in az. In just the last few years, rents have skyrocketed. Tiny 'luxury' home communities are going up but its literally just apartments made to look like houses. They go for 2400 for a two bedroom that my friend has. I'm making 23$/hr but it feels like life was more affordable when i was making 13.79/hr back in 2017. I was paying 900$ for a nice one bedroom. Now? That same unit 1400-1800 easy. Even run down areas will try to push 1200 for a one bedroom or even studio. @@joeysworldsewer

when you are homeless and come out of it you never forget it no matter what you to it well be burned in your mind forever. I still feel it every day that one slip and its back to that. Some days it scares me some days living in this world full of bills and money being homeless seems like peace.
A very sad and compelling documentary that, reflects the pervasive homelessness epidemic in the States and those, that, are unfortunately, forced to face it๐ I have a deep passion and love for North America (since I began travelling there in 2018 and was also, homeless myself long ago in a period of my troubled youth) but I have witnessed the decay of the metropolitan cities within the USA and the increasing crisis of national homelessness and find it shocking that, such a rich and magnificent country would allow their population (especially, the elderly, disabled or, the veteran's that sacrificed so much for their country) to suffer to such a degree without offering the supportive solutions that, the government are more than capable of subsidising. Thank god for the charitable organisations that, are fighting so tirelessly to make a difference. It is a very heart-breaking situation and I hope that, the people who featured in this film found the stability, comfort and supportive help they need and deserve

My rent was about $700. Then the boom. Over three or four years, by the end of 2019, it rose to over $1,200. And it was headed up. I moved to Arkansas.

It's not a choice for many and also some older people have no help and even know who or where to turn when faced with this for 1st time in their life just like many veterans who don't know what's available to them now when wasn't available before

Yes that's right! 5 years ago at the age of 6o I too became homeless because my entire town burned down! Imagine about 30 thousand people all at the same time trying to find shelter,it's an experience I would never wish anyone. After 4 years and finally being able to find a permanent home, whenever I see someone less fortunate I do what ever I can to help such as getting food, a cold drink and maybe a simple conversation because I will never forget those very difficult times!
I lived in that selfish state for over 2 years from 1970-1972. My then husband who was college-educated couldn't get more than minimum wage jobs! I kept after him to GET OUT! His millionaire parents wanted to "keep us there for companionship" but didn't believe us when we told them of the lack of opportunity!
Years later I would hear similar stories from other people about their experiences. "Ugh! I went to [Tucson or Phoenix]. No job benefits! No decent paying jobs! High rents! No common courtesy! Glad I got out!"
After I divorced my second (and last) husband, he was lured to Phoenix. (He was an electrical design engineer.) For a while he was living the "high life." Then the economy collapsed at the same time he got cancer. They had no use for him. (Some compassion!) His company dumped him. He died homeless and impoverished. (I found out about this months later.)
So, my question is "Why isn't Arizona listed as one of the WORST and POOREST states in the Union?" While I have lived in Mississippi and Alabama, I have seen much worse conditions in Arizona and in more abundance!
The following contributes to the scarcity of affordable housing in many cities 1) Fewer landlords accepting Section 8 vouchers 2) the gentrification of older neighborhoods 3) the "don't build affordable housing in my backyard" attitude 4) private equity firms becoming landlords 5) cumbersome & convoluted bureaucracy prevents the development of multi-unit housing.

A big difference! I grew up in the 60's, 70'. and 80's. New York, L.A. and San Francisco. 1970 NYC I made $2.00 per hour. Take home about $66.00. My rent was $40.00- So in one week I could pay my rent and have money leftover for food, movies, etc. Life was good, no worries about rent. Darn!

I'm 65 1/2 years old struggling to make ends meet I haven't succeeded Social Security is not near enough for the cost of living and to keep a roof over your head sure is a slap to my dignity it's getting harder and harder to stay alive

We have that problem in Sweden too. There need to be put in place some possibility for these people to find a room mate to share rent with. Some connection center where people can meet and connect. Rather go together and live 2 or even 3 people in a home than being homeless.

The video is very informative, seems to me the most important thing to to keep an RV any vehicle maintained. If you have a house you STILL have to maintain it and a vehicle is cheaper than for example having a house with a roof leak or plumbing issues. So keep maintaining your vehicle at ANY means!

I've been injured and homeless and it's definitely demoralizing. Changes things when you grow past that the way you do money and debt. My credit is over 810. I'm debt free.

In 2012 I went homeless in Phoenix AZ. Worst part of my life and its due to that economy. I was lucky enough to have a friend take me in back east and I am doing better and back to normal. AZ was one of the worst places I have ever lived. Stay away. I lived in a hotel for 2 weeks downtown with drug dealers knocking at my door at 2 am. Had to pay everyday or get kicked out by sheriff who was there everyday removing people at 9am. Great place to live! I went from making 75k a year in another state, moved there for a job and within 2 months was fired and homeless because I spent my savings moving west just to find out the people out there are out for themselves and wont hesitate to take your job and livelyhood away in a second. I lost everything I had. Pictures I cant replace, and family keepsakes I couldnt take with me. Thanks Arizona, your a stain in the dirt! I will never forget you POS state!
