Loved this interview and typed up some notes for those interested:
    Who is most at risk?
    - Highest death rate is in the elderly.
    - 0.1% for 30 and 40 year olds
Can you get the flu again?
    - Usually people who get the flu, the bodies develop antibodies and they recover in 2 weeks and don't get sick again.
    - For Covid, people who have been discharged are getting the virus again .

    How do you get infected?
    - 3 ways to get infected:
    1. Droplet Transfer: Directly being coughed or sneezed on by someone and being with their droplets.
    2. Indirect Transfer: When patient coughs or sneezes and the droplets land on keyboards/tables/doorknobs. Virus can survive up to 3-4 days on surfaces like tables/door knobs, and 1 day for fabric/clothes.
    3. Direct Transfer: When someone coughs/sneezes on hands and you shake their hands and subsequently touch your face/mouth/eyes etc...

Can you get it just by breathing?
    - Yes, Aerosol Transmission possible in certain cases (i.e. Airborne transmissions)
    - Airborne transmission likely in densely packed areas. But, in outdoor environments and not in closed spaces, not as likely through airborne transmission.
What are the symptoms of the virus?
    - Loss in appetite, mild aches, fevers, sore throat, difficulty breathing.
    - 30% of those who get the virus can't smell or taste anything
    - Lose your sense of smell or taste
Can you get infected if it's on skin?
    - You get infected by virus going through eyes/mouth/nose because there are mucous membranes in those areas.
    - However, you can't get the virus from it just being on your skin. That's why it's important to wash your hands.
    How effective is wearing mask?
    - Very effective.
    - In the west, not many people wear masks which is odd. The US Surgeon General and WHO recommend people not to wear masks, but he disagrees. Wearing mask is extremely effective.
    - They probably said that so medical ppl can have more masks and normal people stop hoarding.
    - If everyone wears masks, there will be less infections in general. WHO encourages normal people not to wear masks. But in Asia, because of cultural differences, they encourage ppl to wear masks.
    - As a result, US/Europe spreading much faster than Asia did.

If it gets warmer, will the virus go away?
    - Hard to predict, but won't go away quickly.
    - Several scenarios:
    - 1st Scenario: Covid ends like SARS did when it got warmer. SARS started in Nov 2002 and ended July 2003. But, back then people travelled less and infection was much smaller (mostly Asia + Canada only).
    - For Covid, IF the whole world cooperates, it can end by July/August 2020 and it won't infect people again. However, only 10% probability this may come true.
    - 2nd scenario: Covid stays in the summer and it'll spread to southern hemisphere when it's their winter and it'll come back again in our winter. Just like regular flu cycle.
    - 3rd scenario: we develop a vaccine and put a end to it once and for all. But this scenario is difficult to achieve.
    - Inventing a new vaccine usually takes 10-15 years and costs US$800M. Covid is not even 100 days old. Doctors have only had 2 months to understand their DNA structure so far.
    - At fastest, IF everything goes smoothly (big if), and it'll take 18 months if all goes well to develop vaccine.
    - However, even if US / China develops a vaccine, would they share the vaccine? Also, it'll be impossible for US with 320million population to vaccinate everyone. It becomes a choice of priority. Who gets the cure first?
What cures are being used now?
    - Best thing we can do is "drug repurposing":
    - Try to find a drug that's being used to treat another disease that can also be effective for Covid.
    - Ex. A drug that is used for Malaria was found to be somewhat effective in treating Covid and used for critical patients right now.
    - Another way:
    - Take the blood of patients who recovered and use the antibodies in the blood to give to critical patients. So recovered people should donate their bloods if they can.
    Any last comments?
    - Currently, doctors working 2 months nonstop and very worn out. Their bodies are tired as a result so they can catch the virus from patients more easily. They are more vulnerable than normal people.
Last advice to people in teens, 20s, 30s?
    - You may be fine, but if you spread to an elderly family member, it could be fatal.
    - Wear mask. Socially distance. You need to protect yourself so you can protect your family.

I had shoulder surgery at this hospital 15 years ago and I've had no problems with it since. And they encouraged me way back then, not to choose the American pain medicine (I had a choice because I was serving in the Army then) because they said it was addictive, so I used theirs which was a jell-like pouch hooked to an IV and injected directly into my shoulder, I could squeeze the pouch if I was in pain or it automatically injected within a certain timeframe. Absolutely no euphoric feeling going to my head or blood stream, just isolated relief to surgery site... They probably could foresee where we were headed even back then. I think about it all the time with this opiod epidemic we now have. So glad I opted to have my surgery there... Great hospital, smart people!

@@TAKIZAWAYAMASHITA+ I'm 71, work in pathology lab (admin), have suffered from bronchiectasis since age 12, had pneumonia at age 15 for which I had to be hospitalized, and I'm prone to having chest infections. I have been off work with chest infection for last 2 weeks. I have always been told to keep away from people with colds and flu. My Government in UK advised people who are 70+ with or without underlying health conditions to self-isolate for 12 weeks as they are considered vulnerable and must be protected. However, 2 days ago the UK Government changed this Rule and now they are saying only people with "Severe health conditions - class A" can self-isolate, which means I'm no longer considered "At Risk" and will have to return to work if I cannot work from home (I use bus to travel to and from work, a total of 3 buses - 45 minutes each way). My occupational health nurse told me my lung disease is classed as "B" and, therefore must return to work. This is very worrying for me since the confirmed cases and death toll is on the rise and I'm certain if I were to catch COVID-19 it will be the end for me, because of my already compromised lung condition. I'm on antibiotics at present, not sleeping well and frightened to get on the bus and walk into the hospital where we have already had confirmed cases of COVID-19 including some deaths. The work load in admin has been reduced greatly due to drop in referrals and there are 3 other employees in our office who can do my job who drive to work and do not suffer from lung disease. Who will be accountable should I die? High value people like consultants in my department are self-isolating and that's OK, but people like myself who are considered of low value are not OK to self-isolate to protect themselves; this makes me feel disgusted and greatly disappointed. On the one hand we see the Prime minister pretending to be caring about the vulnerable, but issuing instructions behind closed doors to be ruthless! I need to keep my job for financial reasons, therefore leaving my job is not an option. Who do I blame for criminal negligence, in my case?

Yes, you have to be humble and this a lesson that the West need to learn. When the virus exploded into the world scene back in January, South Korea was already at action, starting to test their people. When the results came back with so many positives, the West was mocking South Korea. Racist people all over Europe and Americas were picking out Asian people and calling them Coronavirus. In Italy, Korean foreign students (along with other Asian students) were banned from attending their schools saying they were a danger to Italians. Even the superstar South Korean soccer player playing in the UK, was constantly mocked and ridiculed as a potential coronavirus carrier. Now, this is a vindication for all Koreans on how the West ashamedly behaved, showing what over pride, sense of superiority, and lack of empathy for others going through a horrible time, can come back like a boomerang. I hope this is a valuable lesson to all the Western countries who think they are better.

This was a great interview. I learned more from watching this video than I've learned from watching any U.S. News agency. I am American. Yes - we were told early on that mask were un-effective against this virus, and therefore we didn't wear them. At the same time the greedy people of America went out and bought the entire supply from grocery stores and supply stores. Now that we're learning more we realize we need to wear mask, and to also cover our eyes. In my opinion, we've been a day late and a dollar short since the beginning of this catastrophe. I'm 67. I'm staying away from Everybody the best I can. I'll keep doing that until this is over. I'm going to share this video. I think the world has a lot to learn from the example(s) Korea has set. Thank you for sharing this interview. Bless you, always.

Stay safe Stephen. For years Asian people have worn masks in flu and cold season. They mentioned the culture made it easier. They also pull together more than westerners. Once I understood the route of transmission I knew masks would help. In my area sewing groups are forming to make them for people. so the medical grade ones can go to health care workers.

The idea behind wearing a mask is not self-protection. The mask is to protect your fellow citizens in case you are sick - the droplets that leave your mouth or nose when you speak/cough/sneeze, are caught by your mask - and therefore cannot reach other people.
This is basically a mindset in Korea (and I have experienced this also in Japan and Taiwan): protecting others, thinking of others before yourself.
I am a young, healthy person and the virus isn't a threat to me. But in order to protect weak and old people, I started wearing a mask immediately, just in case I was sick and could be a "spreader" - that's what my parents taught me - being mindful of the needs of others. Sadly this kind of mindset / upbringing seems to have fallen out of fashion.

Umm according to latest update mortality rate of corona virus is around 0.5-1% it is a normal influenza virus like common cold or flu...according to early estimates by China's National Health Commission (NHC), about 80% of those who died were over the age of 60 and 75% of them had pre-existing health conditions such as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, and also about 71% of cases were male...I would suggest not to trust anything before you do your own research... because every year around 15 million peoples die from heart disease worldwide which is about 41000 everyday, which is about 1700 deaths every hour and which is about 28 deaths every minute...since you are from the US it's about 6,47,000 deaths every year 1772 every day, which is about 74 every hour and about 1 person every minute...anyways 20-25 thousand peoples in Italy die from influenza like virus itself every year didn't considered heart disease, cancer,Chronic lower respiratory disease,Stroke and cerebrovascular diseases,Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, pneumonia etc's...well even traffic accidents cause about 1.5 million deaths every year worldwide out of 20-50 million traffic accident patients...I am not a doctor or scientist it is just that I like to do my part of research which can give me the actual relatively facts about the subject which is in question...anyways stay hygiene, hydrated and healthy...cause the vaccine you are waiting for contains a little portion of the virus itself which is either death or weakened or partial version of the virus, anyways vaccine whatever version of the pathogen it contains isn’t strong or plentiful enough to make you sick, but it’s enough for your immune system to generate antibodies against it. As a result, you gain future immunity against the disease without having gotten sick: if you’re exposed to the pathogen again, your immune system will recognize it and be able to fight it off...though it's never 100% anyways what I meant to say is and is clear by now that keep your immunity to the maximum and always try to raise your immunity by drinking lot's of water, drink green tea's...citrus fruit juice like orange, lemon, lime,
pomelo, grapes, berries etc's or just eat the fruit itself and also kiwi and papaya's...take in lot's of green vegetables like spinach, broccoli and also bell peppers...and others normal kitchen ingredients like garlic, ginger, turmeric etc's.

Im so glad i watched this when it was first posted. Its April 4th and our US govt is just telling us now to wear masks. I live in NYC. My neighborhood has the highest concentration of cases. Our hospitals are overwhelmed. We are out of PPE and the mayor is petitioning dentists and veterinarians for their ventilators. Its desperate and frightening. Because of this doctor i was able to get masks in march, when they were still available and prepare for this, while the rest of the country hoarded tiolet paper, probably infecting one another in the process. If me and my family make it through this, it will be because of this video. This doctor is my hero.

In the US, and most non-asian societies, this would be considered as fake, false alarm, panic, and so on. Regardless of political oriontation and believs. Many asian societies are much more homogen, even if they are composed of different ethnics. In North-America and Europe, you will allways find at least a strong minority that will disagree and not go along with the majority and even less with governments. Look at the Us, it's practicly divided in two groups that behave like catholics and protestants before the 30-years war in europe. And the US is, to some degree, the role model for all the outher "western" civilisation. This huge amount of mistrust is backfiring know. Nobody is believing anything, so taking a clear action, that'll see acceptance, is near impossible for those societies.

In Korea the let their senior specialist in the field for 30 years speak to the public. In the US they let politicians speak without full understanding which leads to misinformation and distrust throughout the nation. Listen to specialists about this type of virus. Not politicians!
I want to edit this because of the miscommunication: There are many politicians fighting for the rights of their citizens and advising them to do what is best with the information on hand. The edit to my original comment is 'politicians' should be replaced with uninformed people. They should not be allowed to speak on the same stage as informed people on this matter. The lack of unity is what is creating distrust and misunderstanding. The people who want to trust the uninformed people are less likely go out of their way to find other outlets of news from informed sources because they are hearing the news they want to be hearing.

South Korea should be proud of its moral lead. World economies should copy the lessons of the South Korean people showing social maturity and responsibility. The World community can and must scale-out early detection, fast response and in-reserve medical preparedness. Lack of pandemic preparation is a political choice that must be replaced by economically incentivizing World medical infrastructure. An economy is important, but people's lives must come first as the moral imperative. This interview is such a reality-breath of factual accuracy. The timeline of a pandemic like SARS-CoV-2 is not set by political will, it is set by the chemistry of the virus and how many hosts the chemistry can infect.

I repeat, if you can't get hold of a mask, at least try to make several out of fabric and keep them on at all times
Honestly, governments in other countries should promote the fact that fabric masks are okay too, (& that you can make your own at home very easily) instead of telling everybody that they shouldn't try to get hold of masks for the sake of medical staff
      ㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡㅡ
What we emphasize here in Korea is that even medical-grade masks won't completely protect you from the coronavirus. (The virus is so small that it can pass through any existing mask)
What a mask does is protect you from directly inhaling or coming into contact with droplets infested with the virus. No mask can effectively protect you against the virus.
This is why, for several weeks now, they've been saying that it's okay to wear masks made from fabric too. The whole point is to stop coming into direct contact with droplets, and not viruses. For that purpose, fabric works fine, as long as you replace it when it gets wet and your nose and mouth don't touch the wet surface. You can disinfect it by boiling it, then wear it again. Korea also suffered from a severe shortage of and panic-shopping for masks a few weeks back, but we were able to overcome it.
Thanks for the video! We need more videos like this

But since you get infected through mucous membranes it makes sense to wear masks. I’m going to continue wearing my mask even if people look at me funny here in the U.S

      @nmarinpe 4 년 전 +6

I think that the problem would be if you use the mask incorrectly. For example, if for some reason you touch inside the mask (for example when removing it), you might get infected. It should be fine to use it as a long as you are careful :)

@@Ladeliciadelinda The normal mask protects you just a bit, probably not enough to be significant. But what saved Korea is that literally everyone wears them in public, thus preventing spread. You wear it to protect others, not yourself, so it only works if everybody does it and it's almost useless (but better than nothing) if only you do it.

@Jamie Lang yeah and you forgot to add Chinese to the list. They will tell someone to their face they are inferior or make some other outlandish comment. There is a video on here where a Chinese man is allowed into a restaurant but not his foreign wife so she has to eat outside the restaurant. Most western men would never enter a restaurant if their wives are not allowed. Also in another video a hotel bars foreigners from staying in the hotel even though the foreigner could have been living in China for the last ten years and never left China. When the person with the camera asked the hotel clerk how would she feel if Chinese are banned from hotels in America she just laughs. Now that is arrogant!

I get your frustration. But every individual has a responsibility to maintain their own health and to help maintain the health of their community. That is, we don't need to wait for our local or federal authority to tell us to avoid crowds, maintain distance and hygiene, and to wear a mask. Beyond that, gripes on healthcare infrastructure which is not within the control of an individual remains.
