I think it's "interesting" that I haven't come across a video similar to this for heat, and especially fan noise, for the PS5 - given that noise was such a talking point about the PS4.
I realise there may well be NDA restrictions, but as Sony want to make a point that they have taken on board the complaints and addressed the issues, you might think they would encourage this type of coverage early on.

There's a difference between running hot and overheating. Both these consoles are pushing 4K or 120fps in an extremely small form factor, of course they're gonna run hot.
None of these consoles are hitting 4k 120fps yet. It's going to be 4k30 or 4k60.

I have 8x SSDs, the max temp on tower PC, laptop, consol is 35°C.
One time and only one time when I had 3 days of runing 2x SSDs at max speqd it reached 41°C.
70°C lol my laptop GPU reches thet at max...., my tower PC I9-9900 + RTX 2080Super dosn t reach 70°C, only on stres tests.

The first person to finally talk about the low latency! I’ve been asking everywhere if somebody can comment on if it makes a difference. I’d like someone to go more in depth but I’m glad you at least brought it up.
It is a retail unit Microsoft just put a sticker on their so no pne tries to sell it. Not that anyone would sell it. Also it's louder in the cardboard box because you're creating acoustics like a subwoofer uses a hole in a speaker to make it louder. P.S you should try Red Dead Redemption 2 as that makes current gen quite hot.

One small detail they should add to the Series X is the ability to rotate the power button with the console for a more pleasing aesthetic when using it on it’s side.
The ultimate test would've been if you put it upside down, for simulating a scenario when someone's mom who doesn't know better places in that way!

I would say it defo does when not in the upright position. Also depends on ventilation but heat rises so I think that’s the way it should be used. I did a short video demo of it.

They did a great job on cooling. Also, there's not any real difference between vertical and horizontal but it feels 1 to 3 C just to my touch, cooler on it's side.

I would of liked for them to run it alot longer to see if it thermal throttles over a few hours in that box. Playing just a quick 10 minutes section really won't give you an idea of how much it can heat up.

Can't wait to see more in-depth temperature testing on the series x and ps5, I bet the ps5 is going to have better temperatures overall because It is way bigger and has a huge heatsink+liquid metal.

I really appreciate that Austin took a few seconds to be completely quiet while allowing the viewers to see just how loud the Xbox Series X is.
It may be something small and inconsequential, something that could easily slip by people's minds, but it is these small things that make it so much better.
When he said "once you get used to it it doesn't seem like a big deal" I felt that. I've had mine since launch and the loading times doesn't even seem fast to me anymore😂
Austin, a few days back somebody released an unpacking video, so I think that there is a very little chance of any hardware upgrades from Xbox on Series X now, although software upgrades are still on their way for the feedbacks u guys provide to Xbox.
A thing that bothered me what wasn't mentioned is that Hot exhaust = good. That means the cooling system is doing a good job getting rid of all the heat.
Mine is red hot I thought there was summat wrong with it because it was was kicking hot air out the top so am I right in thinking mine is OK and not something wrong with it its less than three hours old

The series X actually has a small hole on the back to let air escape and the top isnt perfectly flat so the PS4 wont block all vents

This was a great test and once some Next Gen Games come out for the Series X-- they could do a 2nd test to see if playing in 4K@60FPS with Max Ray-Tracing on make it go up 3C or more.

Austin, we play for more than 5 minutes, we play like 5 hours, so test the heat for that'll
The heat exhaust doesnt pick up overtime necessarily. It depends on the game you play. Ex: If you play rdr2, it might give more heat than if you were to play minecraft
Again...Temps will always level out, after just short period of time. It's not as though you're gradually turning up the amount of watt's that the console is using, to also cause the temps to climb. Wattage drain will remain at fairly constant rate while gaming over a long period and likewise because of it, so will the temps that it put's out. Your room temperature might increase slightly, but the exhausted heat from the console, should remain roughly the same.
In sunlight would have been a good thing to test too, but depends on if you have access to sunlight.

It will over heat only if you cover all exhaust ports. And I believe that just like the Xbox one it will shut down then turn back on. Once it turns back on it will tell you to stop covering the exhaust. Keep in mind you will have to play for a very long time and cover the exhaust.
Hi I have some feedback on the SPL measurements. SPL/sound level measurements like these are normally done at a 1m distance. Including distance in quoted SPL levels is key to quantifying the sound level that was measured. For example something that measures 45dB SPL at 1 metre would measure ~54dB at 12.5cm (3x closer). For every halving of distance add ~3dB (assuming no reflections). And be wary that the box will reflect/focus the sound of the fan towards the opening so it will likely appear louder just by putting it in the box. Equally by putting the Xbox on different surfaces the sound will couple into things like tables and it will act as a soundboard and amplify the sound.
For relatively quiet measurements like this the SPL meter should be set to "A weighting" which models human hearing better so give a number (in dBA) that is more representative of how loud something sounds to people. In future videos like this I would recommend you use the same distance from the sound source, ideally 1m :)

Hello excellent your video, I did not see anything like it on youtube.
Today I played about 20 or 25 minutes in my series x and I realized that I did not remove the cover that I put on it to protect it from dust, it was all those minutes with all the vents covered 100%, when I realized the first thing I did was remove the cover and turn it off, let it cool for 2 hours and turn it on and play for about 20 minutes, everything worked normal.
The console did not show any error messages, it did not shut down or restart.
In the same way, it leaves me worried because the console was really very hot and leaves me wondering if it could have suffered damage to some internal component and that it could later present a fault.
After seeing your video when you cover the fan vent it leaves me a bit calm that nothing happened but in my case it was more extreme because the
console was completely covered.
According to your experience and knowledge, you think that some damage may have occurred in my console.

I have to say, after getting my Series X 5 days ago (Thank you Xbox All Access. It arrived 3 days after I ordered it), I think I know where most of the heat comes from.
On the Xbox One, it had an external power brick. That brick got EXTREMELY hot. I burned up about 3 of them with good ventilation. Since the Series X has no external brick, I wonder how much of that heat comes from the power unit.
I ran an external fan on my old XB1 bricks, and now with the XBX to help blow heat away from it

People need to realize that overheat ≠ warm. This applies to all consumer electronics.
Another thing people need to understand is that high performance, components tend to run at high temperatures; temperatures that would cause burns to people if you touch it while it is operating. That's not what these are intended to do so there's no worry about that.
The actual components on the PS5 and XSX (from watching various other places) run at those temperatures, but actually much lower than PC components.
Xbox Series X doesn't have any dedicated games for it yet. All of the games are cross gen and backwards compatible games.
So... There's nothing really worth buy for it yet; not to mention that most/all of the games coming will be on PC and/or PS4.
120 fps on these coming consoles are not something we'll see; at least not within the first few years.
Instead, I think we'll see 4K 60 fps being the more ideal, norm.
So there's no need to worry about getting a TV/monitor that has 120 refresh rate or 8K. Don't waste your money. It'll take some time.
Dust definitely is a concern.
I'm surprised there's no easily accessible way for you to open the Xbox Series X to clean out the dust.
The PS5 let's you open the side panel to have access to the cooling fan, spots inside to vacuum the dust out, and expand the internal storage with a PCIe 4.0, NVMe SSD.
Overall, I think the PS5 is the better choice in terms of the things mentioned here as well as (you know) games; actual next-gen games.
the low start-up speed is why I keep my box on all of the time and let it go to sleep so I can just turn it on and the game will be launched and ready to use right away
As just getting the series x yesterday I gotta say I love it. I can switch between different games with very miniscule to no delay, it's quiet and don't even hear it. I left it on all night playing different games such as COD, No Man's Sky, Fallout Red dead online etc and even downloading multiple games up until I left this evening and it never got hot and still quiet. I don't even hear the fan. I can honestly say it's well worth the purchase. Compared to what I seen on a "prototype" or "unreleased product" I can tell a difference

Sony isnt letting anyone touch the ps5 outside of their controlled hands on that they do. They are keeping consumers in the dark and its not a great look.
I mean we know everything about the PlayStation 5 now. Just like how we know everything about the Xbox Series S/X. So they certainly aren't keeping consumers "in the dark" but both companies have different marketing strategies.

Played Cold War at 120fps for 6-7 hours, didn’t drop a frame or have any heat issues. I have a little table fan blowing cool air in through the back in-take vents and subsequently through the bottom as well though lol.

How hot the exhaust is not very much of a concern, what they really got to focus on is the temperature inside the console. Dirt 5 is not fully optimized yet for native 4K 120 fps and I'm sure it's not easy.
Make a second video when you can with getting readings of the Actual CPU chip not the exhaust air. Im excited to see the future of this console. I want to see the true power of this system pushed to its limits of performance.

For comparison sake, Digital Foundry recently released a video on the X Box Series X running temperatures. These were the hottest temperatures (in Celsius) found at the time of that video during game play:
Center of console (CPU, GPU, internal SSD) - 49 degrees
1 TB SSD add on - 46.2 degrees
Optical Drive - 22.2 degrees
Overall console (temperature being blown out of fan) - 61.6 degrees
Peak power consumption is under 210 watts.
According to them, "The machine is basically silent". If you know anything about component temperatures, you'll know that this is not as hot as people are saying and that the system actually runs pretty cool for the performance.
