- While the martial arts genre probably makes you think of elaborate fight scenes and yeah, there are a lot of those, it's also known for gritty crime dramas, fantasy yarns, slapstick comedies, and everything in between.
Unfortunately, all that variety comes with a downside: Where do you start? Do you fire up a brutal modern-day action flick? Maybe a biopic about the legends who helped make the genre possible? Or do you begin with the '60s and '70s exploitation flicks that made "kung fu" a household word and turned over-the-top sound effects into an art form?
Yeah, it's a tough call. While seasoned fans of martial arts cinema have probably seen most of these movies before, the following hidden gems are great places to kick off your journey into the genre.
If you're interested in modern martial arts movies, you should become very familiar with actor Iko Uwais. 2011's The Raid: Redemption made Uwais one of the biggest names in martial arts cinema, and he's never looked back. For Headshot, his duties were bigger than just starring in the movie. In addition to playing the film's lead, he was its fight choreographer, too, and spent three weeks making sure all of Headshot's action scenes were as brutal, bloody, and beautiful as possible. To do so, Uwais gave each character their own unique fighting style, based on the actor's own background. As a result, every action scene is a blend of different martial arts.
As far as plot goes, Headshot tells the story of an amnesiac who's forced to rescue the doctor who nursed him back to life when the gang who raised him comes back for revenge. But really, the story is secondary. You're here to watch Uwais and his co-stars do seemingly impossible stunts and kick some butt. On those fronts, Headshot more than delivers.

I'm sad for those who only known Donnie Yen for a Star Wars role. The guy is a legend.
Who is he in star wars
@@leviread3354 voice of yoda.
@@kayak0000 bro wtfffff you’re lying 😂😂😂
kung fu hustle is in my top ten movies of all time regardless. its a masterpiece.
It needs to be in English on Netflix like they had it on my DVD back in the day
haha yeah loved that movie..but its more of a comedy
@@crob2793 just read the damn sub
i LOVE THAT MOVIE TO DEATH ...BUT WHY THE HELL DOESN'T Netflix allow the English dub? they have almost a dozen other languages.
@@apizcyril9479 I rather not.
Donnie Yen is best known for his Star Wars role? 😂😂😂😂
He was very well known before that.
I know right, it's like they swear it took a Star Wars franchise to put him on the map .. lol
Americans knows Sh..t about him. u know
Donnie Yen was in a Star Wars?
Myotis1134 - 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Exactly!!
Kung fu Hustle is GODLY🔥
Perfect mix of Action & Comedy
Shaolin Soccer is better though. Stephen Chow films are worth chasing for sure.
I hate this film
@@jasonhobbs1345 Have you seen Shaolin Soccer? It's the film Stephen Chow did prior to KFH, that propelled him to international fame. All his films (he's incredibly prolific) have a comedic element, so if you don't dig silly comedies coupled with dope action, you won't enjoy any of his films.
@@naughtymonkey1563 know i liked shaolin soccer ⚽️ i know hustle was meant to be a tribute but i feel it spits in the face of old school kung fu films ...just how i feel
@@jasonhobbs1345 I feel ya. It's a follow up to Shaolin Soccer, both being written, directed and starring Stephen Chow. My son liked SS but not KFH also.
Thank God. Finally, Furie is getting some praise. An excellent martial arts movie.
I would also recommend Ong-Bak series staring Tony Jaa, or The Protector series also staring Tony Jaa.
I love ong bak the relationship he has with that elephant is just like me and burma from the Auckland zoo of new Zealand
muay thai legend I think you mean The Protector, you’re talking about his elephant got stolen and he as to get it back right?
I also agree, I really like his relationship with his elephant kinda like the Thai version of John Wick lol.
@@13BlueCrimson oh snap haha yeah that one haha love that one
Uncle Bruce Yeah, but it’s such a good film that I recommend it in case Netflix or any other streaming service put those movie up, or if you ever see a physical copy of those movie.
@@13BlueCrimson ong bak and protector was on Netflix but with there updates and all the new movies they got taken off I had them in my list then one day gone hope they bring them back because finding a physical copy is damn near impossible
Hidden gems only for non martial arts movie fans.
Chocolate is an amazing martial arts heavy movie should definitely be up there
Loved it.
It's not on Netflix though, but it should be, I have it on bluray, classic.
I would love to see a Kung Fu hustle 2.. Heck I'll take anything great from Steven Chow..lol
Oh shit someone actually knows about chocolate!? Fantastic movie and gray for inclusivity
Sadly they took it off Netflix years ago
Kid with the Golden Arm, Crippled Avengers, Master Killer, and Flag of Iron. Pretty much any of them old school Shaw Bros movies are gems.
hell yeah.
YESSS. Shaw Bros.
I'm so glad they mentioned the "Five Deadly Venoms." It's always been one of my favorite martial arts movies.
Kung Fu Hustle is my all time favourite.
I loved that movie! I still have it on dvd
Best ever
What makes Kungfu Hustle so great is the way Stephen takes advantage of using the humour and crazy cartoonish moments to make the emotional parts hit hard. Without this, those 'heartfelt scenes' would seem so corny. That's a difficult line to walk, and he does it so perfectly, in both this movie and Shaolin Soccer.
We love the classic Kung Fu Hustle, but luckily there are other exciting martial arts movies to watch on Netflix!
I agree with your comment.... most of the movies listed are average, they didn't take the time to look for better ones except for Kung Fu Hustle
Lyk
5 Deadly Vemons is my all time favorite.
I saw 5 venoms with my dad the 1st day it came out, I was 5 years and that movie has stayed n my memory ever since. Good memories
Iko Uwais is the star of the Netflix series Wu Assassins. As of today, there's been no confirmation of a second season (but nothing saying it was cancelled yet, either; so there's that); but even though there's only one season so far, it's very good and well worth the watch.
This is a fantastic list! Love love love it!!!
“A fist within four walls” is a must for martial arts lovers.
Great vid bro thanks..you brought back some serious memories and then some I haven't seen..
Small clip made me have to dig up my DVD case and pull out 5 Deadly Venoms.
THE NIGHT COMES FOR US !! that's real hidden gem on the Netflix
I'll check it out. Thanks
Yeah the main actors were the same cast as in the raid movies. Iko uwais and joe taslim.
You guys should definitely check them out.
The director of the movie was brilliant, the shot angle were insanely good, not much of shaking camera while filming the fighting scenes.
The fighting styles were very very good too. Its based on the original martial arts from Indonesia called Pencak Silat. Very simple but deadly as fxvk.. Hahaa
Prepare yourself for a bloody effect on every fights happened in the movie.
Okay, I'll stop. I'm giving too much info. Just make sure to check them out. XD
Agree strongly
That's not a gem. The term gem is short for hidden gem. It's a well known movie for people who watches martial arts movies. That would be like is someone told me they never seen the man from nowhere. I would instantly think oh this person must not know much about martial arts movies I guess
YES! for Detective Dee. I watched the first movie years ago and always wanted more.
Nothing can beat raid 2 not even John wick iko uwais is truly the best martial artist
There is no best but they are both great. I loved headshot and the raid. As far as keanu goes my favorite movie from him was man of tai chi. I know hes not the protagonist. Tiger chen is. All these actors are great. Mark zaror and scott Adkins are becoming more well known. The general public is noobs when it comes to martial arts movies. They dont recognize someone unless the movie is popular. Real fans of the genre know all these movies and actors though. Keanu specifically picked marko zaror I think cause he knows hes under rated. He was great in redeemer. There are too many great movie martial artist like Michael Jai white for me to just say 1 is best. These are just a few of the ones I like alot.
If you like this kind of thing, see the best ever:
Blade of the Immortal (2017)
13 Assassins (2010)
Hero (2002) - G.O.A.T (Just breathtaking)
House of Flying Daggers (2004)
Shaolin (2011)
Shaolin Soccer (2001) Stephen Chow comedic genius
Drunken Master 2 (1994) Jackie Chan at his best
Seven Samurai (1954) Akira Kurosawa classic
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)
...there are a lot more, but these are some of the absolute best in my opinion. If you like the fantasy elements, look for wuxia films.
Your list is good, but I'd like to add some of my favorite Wuxia films not on the list.
The Blade a.k.a. Dao(1995)
Seven Swords(2005)
Reign of Assassins(2010)
Brotherhood of Blades(2014)
The Swordmaster(2016)
also special mention goes to the following films:
Musa(The Warrior)(2001) Korean movie
Warriors of Heaven and Earth(2003) Chinese movie
Zatoichi(2003) Japanese movie
The Hidden Blade(2004) Japanese movie
Sword of Desperation(2005) Japanese movie
Yamada: The Samurai of Ayothaya(2010) Thai movie
War of the Arrows(2011) Korean movie
The Sword Identity(2011) Chinese movie
The Final Master(2017) Chinese movie
@@johnlloyddy7016 Curse of the Golden Flower, House of Flying Daggers and he Banquet are also among my favourites.
John Lloyd Dy If you have access to a 3D Blu-ray player, do yourself a favor and watch Swordmaster in 3D! It has to be seen to be believed!!!🔥🔥🔥👍🏿🤛🏿🇺🇸🇺🇸👍🏿
Don’t forget SPL: Sha Po Lang and once upon a time in China 1 and 2. But your list is great. I got all those movies on dvd. There so many good martial arts movies. Check out movies from the Shaw Brothers. They got classic martial arts movies.
The lack of the Rurouni Kenshin movies in this list is sacrilege.
Detective Dee is the top of my list because it's less chaotic than the rest. You actually get to enjoy the beauty of everything, from flying, the girls and mesmerizing martial arts.

Thanks for this!
"The Witch: Subversion" - Is worth checking out
If we're gonna talk about Furie, we should also mention how Veronica Ngo was part of the cast of another Netflix action movie; The Old Guard.
FACTS THE OLD GUARD WAS FIREEE
VERONICA NGO I ALL AROUND FIRE!!!!!
OMG, didn't realize that was her!
I was wondering if that was her when I saw that part. Glad to see a comment confirm it!
If you're introducing Iko, I would also recommend watching the film Merantau. Definitely should be on the list
A lot of movies missing from this list: Triple Threat, The Grandmaster, Ninja Assassin, Shadow, The Night Comes For Us, and so much more!
But nice, thanx!
true, but theres only room for 10, and with such a massive pool to pull from, theres always going to be great choices that didnt make it
@@bloodydove5718 True
Are these on Netflix rn though, this list is supposed to be on Netflix
@@kimberlyjeanne9456 yes they are! Enjoy them!
I'd say "Flashpoint" (2007) Donnie Yen, so satisfying with the story and the brutal beat 'em up.
Oh it looks like I'll be binging on some kick em ups this weekend.
Kung Fu Hustle was released theatrically in the U.S. It's kind of surprising to see it on this list. However, it's also one of my favorite movies of all time, so I'm glad it's getting love. I used to be a huge martial arts film buff growing up, so I'll have to check out some of these that I never seen. Man, back in the day, I'd have to hunt down obscure titles at video rental places and libraries.
I think I might have to rewatch Five Deadly Venoms soon (or I guess it's called Five Venoms now). That movie blew my mind as a kid.
Thanks for this.
Furie and intensive care are my favorite martial arts movies in my head right now.
tai chi master is one of my fav kung fu movie, one among the best.
Loved Dragon Tiger Gate as well.
I would say Donnie Yen's Ip Man movies pretty much started a renaissance on making Ip Man movies. Different actors, different phases of his life, different stories even more made up than the rest, but now starring Ip Man as a character to draw fans of Ip Man to see it.
Don't forget the Night Comes for Us that movie is dope
9:57> he stepped on a flying bird for extra air leverage .. 😂😂😂
The *_Ip Man_* franchise is the pinnacle of Kung-Fu movies IMO. Well-written, well-acted, and well-produced, with some of the best/realistic (if not *THE* best/realistic) martial arts choreography I've ever seen.
Kung Fu hustle was so good. Great love story as well.
Thanks for letting us know about the martial arts movies on Netflix.
Love it!
Stormriders and Storm Warriors, The Barefoot Kid and The Princess Blade.. Great movies
An unmentioned gem from 2000, "The Duel."
Furie was a good movie. Its worth seeing again
Going in order, since yesterday watched first 3, i liked them all, gonna keep going in order.
The Grandmaster. Masterpiece and a true hidden gem. It's directed by Wang Kar Wai, starring Tony Leung. You can't get a better combo
Before Kungfu Hustle he did Fist of Fury 1 and 2, which is just as hilarious and less cg heavy.
Nice list
Love that Buybust is on this list 👌
I loved headshot, Ikos uwais is amazing
I want a modern kung fu movie with the classic fight choreography and sound effects.
Buybust also is cool and has a thrilling atmosphere all throughout film the confine space the human element makes the film amazing
Flashpoint starring donie yen has the best 5 minutes of fight scene handsdown
If only him and Tony Jaa did a movie when they where younger
@@rwchitown5570 Yeah "Ong Bak" and "Flashpoint" were crazy. "Rumble in the Bronx" was dope..but Jackie's older movies were always nuts (pause). Gordon Liu was a good actor too.
Flashpoint is literally Donnie yen porn
Jackie chan is the GOAT
Dont forget "the raid" 1&2
I’ve seen almost all of them. And love them
Love martial arts films, long time fan. The move " FURIE " is absolutely crazy !! It's a Vietnam film and I personally have not seen too many from there as good as this. It's on Netflix right now. If you know of more from Vietnam like this PLEASE holla and let me know.
Furie is really good I have watched recently it's an action female leading story.
Kungfu Hustle is one whole package of entertainment ride ❤️
Seriously if people don’t know Donnie Yen from before Rogue One then they’ve not been watching many movies and damn sure don’t watch Netflix.
Ignorant fanboys like those don't even know shit to begin with.
Donnie Yen is awesome!
What's "Rouge One"?
😁
now I have to go and watch everyone of these
As much as I'm happy to see Buybust in the video, I'm more proud about the fact that Iko Uwais is getting more recognition. Hope he keeps making more films like that.
Lols Kung Fu hustle and Shaolin Soccer... Gotta watch Furie. Was really hoping ot see Blood and Chocolate on this list.
If you ain't seen furie it a must watch. I saw a still shot of a Vietnamese woman as lead on Netflix and almost passed it by.
After watch the first 15min I was hooked, it amazing fighting and a great story, well worth the watch. I had never heard of it, and now recommend it to everyone
I don't think it's on Netflix, but I would add "The Wrath of Vajra" to this list. The fight scenes are top notch!
A good Martial arts classic on Netflix now is the Five Elements Ninjas AKA Chinese Super Ninja.
This is the greatest kung fu movie ever made
Kung fu hustle definitely should be the first Kung fu movie you watch it’s pure comedy gold!!
I had such a Fun time with Kung Fu Hustle!! Hilarious as well
Thanks now I got my weeks work of movies to watch
I would add to this list is The Night comes for US. Best action martrial arts film on netflix hands down imo
Jet Li's Shaolin Temple became hugely popular in the Philippnes. TRIVIA: Jet's real name is Li-Lian Jie and it was used in the film. When it was shown in the Philippines they had a hard time pronouncing his name and was thinking of a name and because of its fast popularity they had the thought of him like a big engine. From there they thought of the word JET. Big and fast. So we have a VERY SPECIAL PART in his heart.
There were a few on this list i have never seen. I know what i will be watching soon.
Pretty solid intro into Martial Arts movies. I didn't even know Donni Yen acted in the Star War Universe .
Well Done
Dragon tiger gate is one of my favorite
No mention of "36th Chamber of Shaolin"? You should be ashamed.
How is that a 'hidden gem'? Everyone knows about it. Anyone who has only seen the dubbed version is a fool, RZA notwithstanding.
I think this list is specific things that are streaming on Netflix. Amazon Prime has a ton of the Shaw Brothers films available to stream for free
Headshots story is actually quite touching for an action movie
Another one you missed out "The Villainess", one of THE best intros you will ever see..
that was insane!
The Night comes for us
One of the best movies for epic fight scenes I've ever seen. Netflix should recommend it to everyone lol
That movie is CRAZY... And violent!

The cinematography, the action scenes are just *_chef kiss_*
All Iko Uwais films are incredible.
The Night comes for us is decent, Furie is worth watching.
I have seen them all apparently but great job though
Dragon Tiger Gate and Kung Fu Hstle are basically anime come to life, love them movies I can watch them any day
I liked furie it was very action packed but also the rebel 2007 which was the first time I saw Veronica ngo was very good it was my introduction to vovinam
Dragon Tiger Gate is one of my favorite movies
Yes Kung Fu Hustle is a masterpiece. If you liked it you will love Sword Master... although it seems to have been removed from Netflix :(
Nobody in there right mind considers kung-fu hustle are real martial arts movie comedy trash 🗑
thank you
I highly recommend 'the rebel 2007' a vietnamese action movie i think. Starring veronica from Furie as th fmc.. The story line and fight scenes are amazing aswell as the characters. Such an underrated martial arts movie. Take at look m sure you won't regret it. Might thank me even lol

The Five Deadly Venoms.....cult classic. Awesome.
@ 4:18 -- the film's 3rd surprise is former UFC light heavyweight champ Brandon Vera, who at one time was touted to become both UFC light heavyweight and UFC heavyweight champ of the world! That was the time of another Filipino hit 'Bebo Bebo' by Black Eyed Peas :-)
Dragon Tiger Gate and Kung Fu Hustle are amazing films
All other movies can take a back seat to Bruce Lee's Enter the Dragon, a true classic. And on a not so serious note, one should also watch the film Kung Pow Enter the Fist
Yeah Kung fu Hustle is hilarious and has crazy action and Headshot is just brutal. Ive watched both a couple times
I forever a martial arts movie fan. I mostly like to watch either modern, and classic martial arts movies. The best place to go is Tubi.
I grew up watching old Kung Fu movies.
Furie , Dragon Tiger gate , Detective Dee , 36 chambers , 5 venoms , the Grand master , IP man movies , kung fu hustle , ALL ARE INCREDIBLE what's not to like. The only problem is Netflix needs to change them more often because there are tons more just as good. Like , kung fu killer , Shaolin , Five fingers of death , Kung fu of the 8 drunkards , snake in a monkey's shadow and many more.
Well there goes the next week of free time, i have only seen a Master Z, 5 Venoms and Kung Fu Hustle. I will watch everyone one of these.
Best film out of South Korea
