I think those lines on her stomach were from self harm. I don't think they were stretchmarks. Self harming also explains why she was ripping off her burn scab.
I thought so also, they look like she clawed at herself.
Yeah. Stretch marks are more random than what was shown
Agreed
Yeah, it looks like self-harm.

The collapsed chest thing kind of happened to a teacher of mine. He used to be an EMT and accidentally broke a mans rib giving him cpr but the guy training him said “He’ll survive a broken rib, he won’t survive if you stop”
That is scary like crazy.
I petsat for my neighbour when he was in the hospital following a heart attack. Is actually kind of a wild story, because he only survived because of this tiny ass woman who broke his ribs with CPR throwing her whole weight into it
He was working as a doctor at a prison, and despite having a damn heart attack, there are no exceptions to the security protocols so EMT's had to go through all the procedures before they could even reach him
She probably wouldn't have had the energy to keep pumping at the strength she needed to long enough, so wrecking his ribs with her body weight was like the only option
He's still alive now - just moved house
@Mari Muthu44201 shut up
Part of cpr training is that you have to pump hard enough for the potential to break ribs
People suffer broken ribs most of the time when receiving CPR. 2 inches of compression on the sternum will do that to yuh.
It's basically self destructive horror at its finest, it's frightening how far a mental breakdown can go

That ending was the biggest “holy shit” moment I’ve had in a while. Reality setting in at the very last second was an incredible choice on the director’s part in my opinion.
The ending really creeped me out, the directors choice to show it for a few seconds was great, so unsettling!
It reminds me of another religious horror at the other end of the spectrum, The Ninth Gate nearly ends in the same way, with a character Balkin self-immolating because he thinks he's reached the zenith of Satanism and is about to meet Old Scratch. Its insane how horrifying zealotry can be regardless of the faith. I still can't watch that ending, which is more prolonged.
it made me sob. not out of sadness, but out of legitimate terror and shock. i’m sure watching it in my room alone in pitch black at 5 AM probably contributed, but fuck.. the suddenness of it, how short it is, and how loud it is.. it just got to me so bad and it’s like my brain started crying before i could really even comprehend it

Actually the writer said it's meant to be a bit more ambigus.
I'm pretty sure the cut back to reality confirms that she participated in self-immolation. She has this grand illusion of receiving her wings and ascending to heaven.

The marks on her stomach might be self harm. People cut themselves where it is not usually seen. Sounds like Maude found a demon. Poor woman.
Demons prey on the weak, or the timid. Anyone who would be easily corrupted or persuaded to help them enter this realm.
Self harm is also seen as a form of "repentance" in many cases in many religions.
So when my mom and I watched this we had a theory about Maud being possessed/tempted by the devil ( of course that was before the end reveal). There are a few clues to this throughout the movie: the cockroach appearing to her claiming to be “god”, the way her face looks during religious fervor looks almost demonic, but the biggest proof to me is the painting that Maud sees from the William Blake book. That painting is called “The Great Red Dragon and the Woman clothed in Sun”, and it’s a symbolic representation of the devil consuming innocence and purity. With the ending in mind, I think all of this was more of a symbolic possession, because Maud is consumed by her inner demons.
I think you may have missed the whole point of the movie

I'm guessing Maude seems to suffer from PTSD, schizophrenia, hysterical delusions, and something else as it seems to me. At least this film seems to portray to me.
Definitely.
Religious delusions are very common during psychosis. scary/confusing for kids w mentally ill parents :/
I was thinking hyperreligiosity with temporal lobe epilepsy! When the fireworks were going off, it appeared she had a seizure. She had a weird relationship with lights throughout the movie as well.
She doesn't have to have schizophrenia - her delusional state can be explained by other mental illnesses or even her trauma. Considering it happened after the incident, I'm guessing it's just a "side effect" of her mental breakdown.
Pretty scary stuff.

I DO wanna point out one theme I haven’t seen brought up in any KRplus analyses: this film also depicts the negative impact on unresolved psychological/emotional trauma. Maud is a trauma victim hiding from her unresolved pain in her delusions. In a very real way, the lack of healthy coping skills can result in self-harm in trauma victims.

I truly don't understand how people can say this movie isn't scary! The atmosphere of dread and that sinking feeling that something bad is going to happen just continues to build and build throughout. The obvious mental distress Maud is under, that horrible rape scene where the guy mocks her afterwards, her desperate loneliness and continued disconnect from everyone and everything real, that ENDING......mostly it's the realization that maybe we're all one traumatic event away from becoming someone like Maud. She's so alone and so ill and will never get help. That's true horror.
I'm a huge fan, but at 7:57, those are clearly self harm scars, not post natal scars. It follows with her ongoing behavior from throughout the movie as well. Increasing levels and signs of self harm up until the very last scene.
Another thing you skipped over, what happened around 15:41 is assault if one has watched the movie. She clearly tells him "no" at least twice after the had her flashback from what seems to be PTSD. A potentially different theory is that she indulged in all these self destructive behaviors and in her self harm, as individuals who have gone through assault like this, go on to develop those behaviors as a way to cope with the trauma.
But definitely you shouldn't skip past the fact that what happened in that scene ended with her being assaulted.
