he seems more playful and accepting than he initially did with the others.

From what I've seen, dogs do recognize their own breed - probably partly by a scent, common to all members, but they do recognize body shapes as well. My Afghan Hound used to approach my Miniature Poodles as if they were Afghan pups, and with their faces shaved, there was a definite resemblance.
