I found a shiny Absol once in XY. I was on my very last ball, so I went “I’ll give it ooone hit to give myself better odds to catch it”.
…critical hit, and my Pokémon went “It did a critical hit because it loves you!”.

The first shiny I ever saw was a shiny Electrode in the power plant in Leaf Green. I was confused by it being blue on the bottom instead of red so I assumed my game had glitched. I restarted my GameBoy and was happy to click on the PokeBall on the ground to find a normal Electrode with red on the bottom, thinking that I fixed the glitch.
I later looked up what might've caused that and learned all about shiny Pokemon, and I kicked myself for letting that one go without even knowing how rare it was.

I had what felt like a near-death experience when hunting wild snom, I almost missed the shiny sparkles and I was tired so I didn’t see that it was light green instead of white. Luckily, I was facetiming my friend, he heard the shiny sparkles and started freaking out. I was one press of the A button away from shadow clawing that thing into oblivion.

The second type of uncatchable is a big problem in the Johto games, with two fairly long routes, which you have to cross twice, between you and Pokeballs

The two shinies at once issue can also happen in generation 4! In Eterna forest you can get double battle wild encounters, both of which can be shiny. if that wasn’t bad enough, often times the two shiny animations playing at once would cause the game to crash, losing both shinies.

You forgot the worst way to fail a shiny! Killing it, turning off the game, and then throwing the console into the Nile River!

I felt that last one. I never have played a game that has shinys in it yet. But the amount of times I’ve been mindlessly clicking or doing something in a game and screwed up something I didn’t want to is insane

my first and worst shiny fail was a full odds random dugtrio that I had encountered in a new save. It had swept my entire underleveled team and broke out of every ball i threw😔the worst part was the feeling of being at my last two pokemon and just knowing that i couldn't catch it, but not wanting to admit it💀💀

I have another one. It's called "accidentally hitting the run button".
I found a shiny Audino in Black, and was like "Why is this purple? I'll get it with a quick ball."
Then I hit run instead of bag.
Then I googled purple Audino and had my day ruined.
And then a few years later, in Omega Ruby, random encounter shiny Audino. I choose to believe they are the same one

The other day, I encountered a Shiny Poochyena. I called a friend so he can watch me catch it, but he instead witnessed me failing it when after I switched to Manectric to paralyze it, it Roared. But that is not the worst Shiny fail I had. A year ago, I luckily found a Calm Shiny Feebas, meaning I can evolve it into a Milotic. And then a few days after trading, my save file got corrupted. But atleast I managed to get a video of the latter.

I found my *first shiny ever* in Pokemon Pearl, a shiny Graveler.

A story I’ll always remember, when I was younger I thought the game lagged or was bad because I didn’t know what saving did, I was playing through my backtracking strange game and found a shiny dodou. Unlike most stories I thought it was a weird cute green glitched version and caught it. I didn’t save my game and lost my weird bird.

As a kid I came across a Shiny Ghastly in Pokemon HG in the bellsprout tower.. at that point you dont have pokeballs yet..
So I went to a pokemart and bought pokeballs and kept running in the same spot believing it'd show up again..

The most depressing shiny Pokémon I have ever failed is when I ran into a random shiny scyther, and managed to catch it in a quick ball, but then I closed my game and forgot to save.

I keep coming back to this video because I love the presentation and also because of the sympathy factor from watching the clips (I've personally never lost a Shiny, but I feel for others who have).
I do have one story which, thankfully, has a happy ending, and it involves happening upon a Shiny Weezing in the Johto Safari Zone in Pokémon SoulSilver. I was playing the game on a bus, so I had to contain my excitement somewhat so I wouldn't embarrass myself in front of the other passengers, but I still gasped and my eyes widened the moment I saw the Shiny and my breathing got a little bit faster. I could feel my chest, shoulders and wrists quiver because this was the closest I had ever got to potentially losing a Shiny and I knew that there was every chance that this Safari Zone Shiny could escape at any turn.
I can't remember what I did to ensure that the Shiny Weezing would be caught (I might have fed it once or twice), but what I do remember is catching it on either the first or second ball. I couldn't believe it! I thought I had to go through a few balls before one of two things would happen. I whispered a little "Yes!" under my breath and the Shiny Weezing is still sitting in my SoulSilver PC to this day.

Coming in really late but agreeeeed on number 1. I lost a Pichu when I was trying to get a shiny Alolan Raichu due to being distracted and killing it by mistake. I looked over right as it was in it's death animation and that killed me hunting for shinies for a long time after that.

I ran into a random shiny swarm Beldum in Platinum, and I wasnt prepared at all but weakened and put it to sleep, and failed ultra ball after ultra ball until he struggled and fainted. I was so upset I lost him, that i decided to go after my first chain shiny, I spent the next 6 hours getting a chain to 40 in the sandstorm. Then finally got my redemption chance, and caught me a shiny Beldum. Felt amazing to redeem myself after that L

Shiny fail 11:
Catching a shiny Pokémon on a busted cartridge that won't hold save files anymore. I have dealt with bad cartridges, but luckily never lost a shiny to one.

Here's one I'm sure some people have done, even if they don't know it: not realizing a pokemon is shiny in the first place. This can happen one of two ways:
1) a new player who doesn't know about shinies at all sees one, thinks, "oh, that's odd," and kills it/runs away.
2) you glance away long enough to miss the sparkles from a shiny that looks almost identical to its base appearance. Things like Seel, Elekid, or the Regice I'm currently staring at wondering if I should go through the trouble of catching it or just try again and hope I'm not making a mistake.

You forgot one. In gen 2, when your box is full once you finally found the shiny you're looking for.
And I know. Shiny Lugia... :'-(

Funny story on running away from a shiny, back in X and Y I was looking for the low encounter rate hydraigon by Victory road. I was doing it for a good few hours and at one point I ran into a shiny fearow however by then I was not even paying attention that I hit run but just as I did I looked back at the game and saw that it was a shiny Fearow. Needless to say after that I stopped looking for the low encounter rate Hydraigon and definitely my biggest shiny loss I ever had.

In Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald there is something known as Battery Glitch where when the battery on the cartridge runs out (Emerald is active by default because of a programmer error) the RNG gets fixed. This removes most of the random chance from finding a shiny. When a new game starts or the battery runs dry the shiny encounter is set to a specific frame (for this example we will say frame #10 out of 8042) that when you encounter a Pokémon on that frame the Pokémon has a 1/7 chance of being shiny. This means that, assuming 60 FPS, if you start the encounter at exactly 1/6th of a second after starting the game there is a high chance for a shiny. If you’re playing on Emerald or your cartridge says the battery is empty then finding the Poochyena means that there’s a high chance of finding a shiny if you keep resetting the exact same way. This also means that if the shiny frame is frame #540 then you have to wait 9 seconds to start the encounter or else there’s no chance of the Pokémon being shiny.

I failed my first shiny last night on Let’s Go, spent 8 hours hunting Gastly and when I finally found him he ran away from me 😭
I legit cried, but pulled myself together, restarted and about an hour later I found another shiny Gastly which I caught and named Dracula

5:47 My rival got a shiny Ralts once. It was one of the first shinies I'd ever seen. I didn't think much of it until years later when I realized how rare they were and how rare they would be for a rival to get.

UNCATCHABLE SHINIES PART 3:
Helping Wally catch a Shiny Ralts. Then having to go through the whole game with him waving it in your face every time you battle each other.

#1 happened to me - I wasn't listening to audio OR shiny hunting, so I didn't notice the shiny Wooper. So I did a gen 8 Masuda/Charm combo to replace what I ran from.

I've seen that Treecko video in other Shiny fail videos, and it's one of the most memorable ever. So sorry that was actually you! Love your videos by the way, you are very clever and funny

When I was playing Silver for the first time, my first Ho-Oh was shiny. But! I didn't realize it at the time, or even know what shinies were. I just thought it was an animation legendaries had. I accidentally fainted it with a crit Flame Wheel, them reset to catch it again, where it wasn't shiny. I didn't even realize what happened until I got way more into Pokemon later that year and it dawned on me.

One time I encountered a shiny wild abra. At first I was just amazed, but that amazement soon turned to a sheer, unrivaled magnitude of suspense when I realized it would only know teleport. I only had one move to catch a shiny, or I'd likely never see it again..

I failed a shiny Whismur while training in victory road in Emerald. The thing is almost every pokemon you find there knows a move that ends the battle. The Whismur used roar and that was it.

My worst shiny fail in any game was when I first started playing pokemon games. I was in pokemon silver, and levelling up pokemon before Chuck, so i was breaking rocks and surfing. A shiny shuckle appeared, and I wasn’t aware of what shinies were... I thought it was a bug and reset the game completely. To this day, as a newish shiny hunter, that shuckle still haunts me... I should try full odds shiny hunting in Silver for it again so I can redeem myself.

Running out of poke balls because every single one of your pokemon will one shot it so you have to try and catch it with full health.

I was shain fishing in ORAS and I was like : "I'am bored last 5 encouters"... The fifth was a shiny but my DS fell and the SD card went off... I took my revenge and caught all he's family

Around 8 years ago I was 12 and my main pokemon game was soulsilver I didn't have a 2nd game and didn't want to reset so I played the story again without saving by just leaving my ds on charge and I found a miltank my first shiny ever and I still think about it to this day

i've never really had this issue but i imagine a lot of people have failed shinies simply because the shiny just looks so damn similar to the normal coloring so if you don't notice the sparkle you're screwed.
EDIT: a couple months after sending this comment i had my first shiny fail. fainted a shiny eevee because my dog distracted me while i was dexnav chaining and i was just mashing A so i didn't notice til it was too late. i spent weeks hunting for another one i was so angry (i did get one tho).

There's always picking the wrong hord target. I got mixed up about which icon translated to what Pokemon and accidentally Solar Beamed a shiny Zigzagoon right in the face. Thankfully, I had already caught one before, but I still felt like a total pea brain and Vileploom went on a temporary time out.

Funny that you put a shiny Geodude in the thumbnail. My first ever shiny was a Geodude in FireRed, which I ended up using for the rest of the game.

One for me is the shinies that dont look that different from regular versions. I had a shiny chansey in ultra sun from grinding XP. I legitimately could not tell if he was shiny or not and also wasn't paying attention to the sparkle intro animation.. Thankfully i decided to catch it but man i could imagine if someone decided to do that during stream because they didn't see the sparkle at the intro.

One time I killed a shiny because it was the first one of that kind that I had seen, and I thought that was how they regularly look. Then, I threw a Pokeball on a normal one thinking I had caught a shiny only to find out days later that it was a normal pokemon and the first one I saw was shiny.

I don't think I've ever failed a shiny. Although, most of my shinys were action replay produced. It took me forever to realize I don't have to weaken the legendary before using the masterball.

Man thats a constant fear of mine, just not paying attention and then boom loosing a shiny. Granted because im so paranoid i always double check if im uncertain so hopefully it never happens to me lol
