- In our series, School Matters, we take a look at something that’s become a normal part of life for so many students in the U.S.: active shooter drills. Beverly Gardens Elementary School in Riverside, Ohio, began holding these drills shortly after the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting. Beverly Gardens is also one of a small number of schools nationwide that actively trains and arms some of its staff. Vladimir Duthiers shows us what an active shooter drill looks like from inside the classroom.

the KIDS in my school have actually addressed the fact they the doors open outwards but nobody has done anything

Your wrong. Schools do not have to prepare for something like that to happen. They choose to scare the logic out of the kids.
Single entrance/Single exit to the property, No backpacks allowed on school grounds, No homework no need for backpacks, trustworthy armed adults at the gate & perimeter, video surveillance of the fence line. Done. Problem solved, if not severely reduced.

One time during a drill, my sub didn’t have the key to lock the door, so everyone was screaming and laughing and the door was just open. The. The police came (they come to all of our drills, just in case I think) and talked to him for a while, but it kinda wasn’t his fault I think. He was also supposed to turn off the lights and shut the shades and stuff, but he didn’t. Eventually the door was locked, but we also had to practice listening for a fake call for knowing the drill was over, because someone could fake it. So when they said the fake call, he was like , ok get back to work, and then we were all like no no no

Our school used to say 6th grade meeting but now they just say lock down
our school is stupid they say “lockdown drill” even if it is a real lockdown and people think it’s always fake cuz of drill
We have a bell that sound through the whole lockdown it’s very loud and if your not used to it it’s very disorienting and will give you an really bad headache
I remember 8 or 9 years ago after the Sandy Hook incident, my school installed little holes in the ground inside the door frame where a metal rod was to be inserted so that even if the lock on the door didn’t work you couldn’t open the door because of the rod blocking it. I thought it was such a good idea but as a college student now looking back at my 6th grade self, it’s so sad and brings tears to my eyes that we actually had to do this and still do even in college. I still remember seeing the man with the drill, installing that tiny hole in each classroom and thinking “how smart to implement that” as an 11 year old. Now I see how sad it is that children are now accustomed to this kind of situation.
I graduated in 2021. We had shooter drills in my college too. And one time my school actually did have a real lockdown after it was reported that a gunman was on campus. Luckily it was a false alarm, but it was super scary. my friend was in the library and his class hid in a supply room. 😢
I didn’t expect this to make me emotional but I started to cry watching them barricade the door and hide in the corner. Growing up a fire drill was the only thing we worried about and those we looked forward to because we got to go outside. This breaks my heart

Yes because trying to film this drill would work so well in the dark. This was just to show people what our children are being taught in school. A peek into a classroom for parents. They should have disclaimed why the lights weren't going to be turned off, but I guess they give some people a little too much credit thinking they would understand that you can't do a news segment and interviews for TV in the dark.
Like the school shooter is gonna be like “Oh looks like the lights are off must not be in there I’ll try again tomorrow”

As an elementary school principal I am terrified when I see the lack of correct practices being taught when it comes to the safety and security of students.
Did you feel this was incorrect? What does your school do differently? I’m just curious. In my school, we locked the door, shut off the lights and stood against the wall in complete silence. (This was college)
As a preschool teacher this makes me cry. The kids in my class should be learning numbers and colors and shapes - not how to hide for the sake of their life in a classroom bathroom.

I love how the kids are very calm and serious just listening and doing exactly what the teacher is saying. The teacher is also very calm and I love how she is saying everything what she is doing. Good job❤️
Instead of having them barricade a door, how about installing doors that automatically lock down when they are shut for classes. Each room should also be equipped with an escape room. A simple room they can go into behind a wall or underground. A child’s life is worth more than what it would cost to accomplish this. They have all summer to get it done starting with making it extremely difficult to get into the building period. Alarms if doors are left open or propped open, bullet resistant glass. Get rid of back packs being brought into school, backpacks should hold their books and remain in the classroom or set up lockers for all schools Elementary through High School. Homework is done on computer’s or set aside to be done the last hour of the school day.

at my school, the Drills that we do are lock down and fire drills. lockdowns, we just continue with our work like if nothing. fire drills, we go out side and ee stay there for 20 mins then go to 2nd period. they exagerate for a fake one.

This made me cry because of how young they are and that they have to know these people like this exist in the world. The schools should all install a sort of secret room hidden with metal doors so that they are safer than they are currently. It’s awful how kids have to worry about this everyday. They have to think the unthinkable, and it’s awful how kids go to school normally and have to consider this happening.

We actually had a code red today (it was a glitch in the alarms so all of our county schools got the code red) we sat there in the dark for 45 minutes. Our teacher was really scared because one of the doors wasn’t locking, we pushed a few desks infront of the door. Just know that your teacher knows what to do and will probably be willing to attack the shooter/dangerous person and to try to stay calm.

For the people saying, “the intruder knows these drills too” yes they do but if you were a school shooter would you waste the time you have trying your hardest to open a door? Probably not. The intruder is going to get caught faster if he/she waste time on one door. So they move along, where they see lights or an opened door.
Think like a shark not a minnow. The sharks know from this proceedure that mid period is a bad time to attack. The obivous move is to attack during a class change, and the standard proceedure will actually end up locking victims out of the safety of class rooms.

Every classroom is doing it, the shooter probably only wants to get in and out of classrooms quickly. It's better than not barricading.
I mean it's a school. Especially in a smaller elementary school it's a given that they are inside. The shooter isn't gonna be like "Huh, it's quiet, guess no one is in there."
I think school shooter drills are highley ineffective. Nobody takes thinks about how the school shooters took these drills when they were in school. So what makes people think that they will think that there aint gonna be any kids in school on a Wednesday in september? And obviously when somebody goes to shoot a place up, they are prolly gonna plan it. So they are prolly gonna take out the office and staff so that they cant go on the intercom and then use there plan to get into the rooms. If somebody in prison can find a way to escape then im sure somebody planning to shoot up a school could get away with it just fine. Look at all these schools getting shot up now

My school never did this. We would have a "lockdown" which is just turning off the lights and sitting in a specific corner of the room where no one can easily see you. There was never anything to this extent.

Some kid from another school not far away came in at lunch and brought a knife and started beating up some kids and waving it around. Scary af someone's finger got cut and one person got stabbed.
Someone threatened to shoot up our school, it was a false alarm and the person said it was a "joke" but class was dismissed early lmao
I remember there was a bomb threat at the elementary school, so a bomb squad, fire department and the police came and we got dismissed at 12, though it was scary, it was nice we left early

We had like 2 drills before i graduated in 2019. Both times teachers had gotten FIRED for making noise during the drill. We couldn't talk, move desks, be on our phones for do anything but hide in a corner. We could t even close the doors in a few hallways as there were no doors. I pray they have fixed these issues at my old high-school
At my school our doors are luckily bullet proof and lock automatically. We still go away from the door to make sure were away from any possible view point. We also put part of a firehose on the door open thingy at the top to stop the door from opening. Along with big heavy shelves against the doors if they can be moved. My school takes it really seriously and we also have these giant closets with more bullet proof doors to hide in which is some classrooms.

But we were never allowed to cover our ears “in case we missed an important direction” so I’m fairly sure I got temporary ear damage in my left ear from the blaring sirens. But if it’s loud enough that I physically cannot stand it, I don’t think I could hear any directions over it, do you?

This isn't how it works. This is a pathetic version of it.
Desire Love. Exactly. Not to mention that even if they “figure out the tactics” this is still very safe. Because many shooters if a door is locked and/or barricades they won’t waste their time because they know that they have only about 90 seconds to get in and out so they’re not going to waist time. They take advantage of open spaces and if none of the spaces are open, then they will be caught before they get te chance to do anything.

There was an actual shooter in the school and we ran under the table. A boy grabbed his phone to text his mother and hid in plain sight and a girl was by the door. My best friend and I were crying and telling each other goodbye. A boy was standing on the table and stepped on my head. The teacher forgot to lock the door. A lot of kids were crying also. Everyone in my classroom could have been killed because of idiots who actually want everyone to die. The boy on the table yelled “I WANT TO DIE!” When the shooter in the school. Thank you Jesus for keeping everyone safe.

@@crypticgirl9427 at my school they say shooter drill over the intercom. Then a police man comes through the school as if he was a shooter. One time a class didn’t have enough time to close the door. Police officer walked in and said they would be dead and need to go quicker. They were the first classroom to the left. 30 kids. He continues to shake doors and stuff. You never know when it will happen either so if you are in the bathroom… yikes.

When I was a little kid Officer Friendly used to visit the school. It was comforting that the Officer could protect us. I feel so sad that this is what our kids have to do now. But hopefully it will help to empower them so that more of them and their teachers can survive the unthinkable 😢!!

At my school we lock the doors put desks in front of the door turn off the lights and puts something over the window of the door and go in the corner away from the door and we always carry something to protect us if it were to happen

We’ve gotten so used to preparing to die that it’s not even scary, we don’t think it’ll happens until it does. We laugh in the corner away from windows and doors like it’s a break from class. Then get up like it’s our daily routine. I’ve been to six schools maybe and one of them had us walk 500+ kids three blocks away to show us where we would go if someone tried to attack, three times. They took initiative in preparing us to leave. Other schools don’t take it as seriously and we don’t know what to do. I still don’t know what to do. We’ve only been told to sit against the wall as we told each other what we think we would do if someone came in. How we think we would be the hero.
Edit: a day later and we go in lock down bc the school thought there was a shooter. Turns out It was an accidental call.

Am I the only one who thinks it’s rude. That the teacher told the boys to do all the work. She was almost hiding before some of the kids got down. She was also being very slow with the kids. If she made that much noise in that much time. They would be in serious danger.

When we had a lockdown drill, in 2nd grade my teacher got her scissors and said, ” if they come in, ill stab them or even lose my life to protect my children” when she said that, the whole class grabbed their scissors from their pencil boxes😂

In the 5th grade we had a intruder drill, and he knew that a lot of the kids had knifes in their bag, and he said “if this were real I would go and grab all your knifes,” he was the best teacher ever
Extremely scary for parents and of course students. Sadly,, very very much necessary. Prayers for well being and safety for all children. Times have definitely changed!

what chilled me the most is that when the girl was texting her mom, it almost autocorrected to “mommy”. I don’t know if that’s intentional, but it shows how young those kids are.

One huge relief for me with my kids in remote learning...no one will shoot them up in school.
I graduated in 2012. And we had active shooter drills but we never had to go as far as blocking the door and grabbing a “weapon” and such. So sad my son or (kids) will have to learn how to barricade doors and how to defend themselves at school vs just going to have fun and get an education.
When I was in school we’d hand out scissors. We never actually been in real danger though, only alerts.

Im a highschool junior and the earliest memory I have of an active shooter drill is 6th grade. Since then, I've been in 2 lockdowns at 2 different schools bc of some kids that took guns to school. First one was at an low income school so I'm surprised we only had 1 incident. The second one was at a high income school which I moved to that same year and the procedures taken in both schools were so different. At the low income school, all we did was lock the door and turn off the lights. At the high income school, we locked the doors, turned off the lights, block the door with the desks and chairs, and move to two different corners of the classroom.
When we did lockdown drills at my schools we just put paper over the door’s window, locked the door and hid behind the teacher’s desk. It was always half-assed, and it doesn’t make sense that they didn’t teach us to barricade the door and find an object to defend yourself

Things like the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire. Workers in the factory were trapped inside. Their doors opened inward and locked from the outside, which made it impossible to escape among the commotion. Workers trampled each other to get out of the building. This is why our doors open outwards most of the time.

I'm even crying...😢 This is one of the saddest things I've seen...kids having a drill on an active shooter. When did it come to this? Kids should never have to worry about being shot at a school. Glad to hear some teachers an staff are being armed. Glad the schools are training these children.

I'd done these drills back before Columbine. They've been a part of the drill set for years and years. They're certainly not new. So don't feel too bad. And it's good that kids know what to do! I'm glad they do these drills
